Conservatives suffered massive losses in england's local elections on Thursday, with the Liberal Democrats making significant inroads in key areas.
The results show that the conservative Party is facing a serious challenge from the left and that Prime Minister Theresa May's authority is waning.
Theresa May's conservative Party lost its majority in the London Assembly, where the Liberal Democrats made significant gains.
The Conservatives also lost control of several councils in the north of england, where they had been dominant for many years.
The results are a huge setback for Theresa May, who had hoped to use the local elections as a marker of her own strength.
Theresa May's authority has been seriously challenged by the result of the local elections, which show that the conservative Party is facing a serious challenge from the left.

overnight at the expense of the Tories I
think the reason the Tories have had a
disaster a set of results is because
they haven't been focusing on the number
one issue that is facing voters all over
the country and that's the cost of
living crisis and it's really telling
they haven't spent a single day of this
campaign talking about the cost of
living because I haven't got the answers
because they crashed the economy and
they don't know what to do about it the

we're making progress key election

hearing from people tonight is that they
want us to focus on their priorities and
they want us to deliver for them and
that's about halving inflation growing
the economy reducing debt cutting
waiting less than stopping the boat the

same story in Plymouth in Stoke up in

like grounds as we go into the next

that we are on course for a labor
majority of the next election a very
very good set of results labor also made
gains in Stoke-on-Trent and Plymouth
cities with conservative MPS and they're
expecting their best local election
results since 1997. although the policy
do not currently have the national
supports they held for that Year's
general election something the
conservatives are Keen to point out it
doesn't seem to me as though laborer
making anything like the kind of
breakthrough that they want to see you
know a lot of the losses have been to
more the kind of protest parties so to
Independent candidates or to the liberal
Democrats and even in some cases the
greens which suggest to me that there's
everything to pay for for the general
election but as expected it's going to
be a difficult day for the conservatives
back in Windsor Ed Davey was confident
that conservative losses were not nearly
short-term protest votes lots of
lifelong conservatives were telling us
that they'll never vote conservative
again they feel so betrayed they see the
current conservative party is totally
out of touch lacking Integrity not
understanding or listening to their
concerns taking them for granted and
that's why I think the people who've
switched from conservatives to the
liberal Democrats in these local
elections will stick with us come the
general election these local elections
were the first to require photo ID in
order to vote and the Electoral
commission says some people were turned
away from polling stations they will now
examine the challenges the new rule has
had on voters although a full report
will not be read eaten until September
