On Sunday evening, a texas man killed five of his neighbors after firing a gun in an apparent attempt to create a noise complaint. The man, identified as 54-year-old Stephen Willeford, was eventually able to subdue the gunman, who had reportedly been trying to shoot his neighbor's dogs. Willeford will now likely be hailed as a hero for his quick action in stopping the rampage.
The shooting has renewed calls for stricter gun laws in texas, which has some of the nation's most permissive gun laws. The state has a "stand your ground" law, which allows individuals to use force if they believe they're in danger of being killed or injured. texas also has a "castle doctrine," which allows homeowners to use deadly force to protect themselves and their property.
Willeford's actions may have saved lives, but they also highlight the need for stricter gun laws. In the wake of the shooting, lawmakers in texas are likely to consider measures to tighten gun laws.
