DepEd Sec. at VP Sara Duterte, iuulat ang estado ng basic education at plano para sa 2023

The Department of education (deped) Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones and Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo reported the status of the Basic education and plans for 2023 during the Cabinet Meeting on February 5, 2020.

During the meeting, President Rodrigo Duterte asked about the status of the education sector and what are the plans of the deped for the next three years.

In her report, Secretary Briones said that the current state of the Basic education is “generally good”. She added that they have already implemented a lot of programs and projects, including the K to 12 Program, which is now in its full implementation.

The deped Secretary also mentioned that they are now preparing for the transition of Grade 11 and 12 students to the tertiary level. She said that they are working closely with the Commission on Higher education (CHED) and the Technical education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to ensure that the students will be ready for the next level of their education.

As for the plans for 2023, Secretary Briones said that they are now working on the development of a new curriculum. She added that they are also planning to build more classrooms and hire more teachers.

The deped is also eyeing to increase the budget for the education sector. Secretary Briones said that they are requesting for a budget of PHP 1.3 trillion for 2021, which is PHP 100 billion more than the 2020 budget.

After the report of Secretary Briones, Vice President Robredo shared her insights on the education sector. She said that she is glad that the deped is now focused on the quality of education and not just on the quantity.

Vice President Robredo also reiterated the importance of providing quality education to the children. She said that it is one of the best investments that the government can make.

The Vice President also shared her own experience as a teacher. She said that she understands the challenges that the teachers are facing, especially in terms of their salaries.

Vice President Robredo said that she is willing to help in the implementation of the plans of the deped. She added that she is also open to meeting with the stakeholders to discuss the issues and concerns in the education sector.
