When it comes to horror and sport, there are few things more horrifying than a red card moment in football. These are the moments when a player is shown a red card and ejected from the game, usually for a violent or dangerous act.
These moments are often captured on camera, and they can be absolutely brutal to watch. Here are eight of the most horrifying red card moments in football history.
In 1995, Manchester United’s Eric Cantona was shown a red card for launching a kung-fu kick at a Crystal Palace fan who had been taunting him. The incident was caught on camera and replayed over and over again on TV, making Cantona a household name.
In the 2006 World Cup final, French star Zinedine Zidane was shown a red card for headbutting Italian player Marco Materazzi in the chest. Zidane had been provoked by Materazzi, but that didn’t make his headbutt any less horrifying to watch.
In 2014, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez was shown a red card for biting Italian player Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match. Suarez had been involved in a similar incident earlier in his career, so this was just another black mark on his record.
In 2015, Brazilian player Oscar was shown a red card for a horrific tackle on Colombian star James Rodriguez during a World Cup qualifier. Rodriguez was lucky to escape serious injury, but the tackle was still one of the most brutal things we’ve ever seen on a football pitch.
In 2018, Argentine star Lionel messi was shown a red card for punching Chilean player Gary Medel in the face during a World Cup qualifier. The incident was caught on camera, and it was clear that messi had lost his cool and taken a swing at Medel.
In 2019, Brazilian star Neymar was involved in a fight with Real Madrid’s Marcelo during a Champions League match. The two players exchanged punches and kicks, and Neymar even headbutted Marcelo at one point. It was a wild scene, and both players were shown red cards.
In 2019, Juventus star Cristiano ronaldo was shown a red card for punching Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone in the face during a Champions League match. ronaldo had been provoked by Simeone, but that didn’t make his punch any less brutal.
In 2020, barcelona star Lionel messi was involved in a fight with Athletic Bilbao’s Asier Villalibre during a Spanish Super Cup match. The two players exchanged punches and kicks, and messi even headbutted Villalibre at one point. It was another wild scene, and both players were shown red cards.
These are just eight of the most horrifying red card moments in football history. These moments are often captured on camera, and they can be absolutely brutal to watch.
