hi everyone welcome back to genre
bending I'm Amanda Roundtree with the
library marketing department at
HarperCollins and today I have very
special guests with me two of my
HarperCollins colleagues as Pam Jaffe
and Angela craft and why don't you guys
tell them about what you do here ok my
name is Pam Jaffe special hello to all
the librarians out there I had a brand
direction and publicity for the Avon and
Voyager imprints so we really are the
genre vendors for the company we work on
romance and science fiction I'm the one
who gets the authors out and about on
the roads I try to make better
relationships with hopefully librarians
after this but also independent
bookstores and major account I work on
conventions I work on partnerships and
work in tandem with Angela building
promotions and contests to help support
the authors and basically improve our
outreach direct to consumers and pitch
media so we're never bored have a lot of
hats there yes and I'm Angela craft I'm
associate director of marketing for Avon
and Voyager and that means that I also
wear a lot of hats I handle our social
media presence on places like facebook
and instagram and i'm always plotting
new ideas for how to get the word out
directly to consumers again as well as
assisting our authors i help them with
how can they best use these platforms to
promote themselves to consumers and to
librarians awesome so since you both
worked so heavily with romance and
sci-fi and fantasy and all that what do
you enjoy most about working with genre
fiction I want the readers the most
really the these communities they seem
very different you know fine fiction
romance what do they have in common and
that is the fact that the readers are so
excited about them they want to read
everything by an author as soon as they
find a new one and in cases of romance
and fantasy especially you'll often have
authors that have a deep deep backless
for people who keep going back to see
and on the flip side of it having worked
across many genres and multiple types of
fiction and narrative nonfiction I love
the author's they are so down to earth
and they believe so firmly and what
they're writing of
out and the people they're reaching
we're finding out now you know we're in
definitely interesting times also the
romance authors are basically using
their events and their literature as a
platform for female empowerment and as a
publicist that's really great that gives
me great newsx you know news hooks to go
out and talk to let's say CBS early
morning or NPR and get fantastic kids
that really do talk about how romance
has changed since the 1970s and those
bodice-ripper days to now being such a
force for feminism and really just a
platform for these authors to go out and
talk about women's rights from
historical days to today and then the
other fun thing we're doing is science
fiction at science faction we do have
birthday coming up and Angela's been
working really hard with the Voyager
team to create what we're calling a
science fair so maybe you want to talk a
little bit about that yeah the the
Harper Voyager Science Fair is going to
be a lot of fun it's going to be for two
weeks in April and these Harper Voyager
authors are such an interesting diverse
group of people we have we have neuro
scientists that are authors we have
people that have studied space and
microbiology and there are medical
researchers so we thought that we have
these this great resource in our authors
we're going to have two weeks where we
have our authors celebrate all things
science across all sorts of social and
digital platforms from reddit to
Instagram to Twitter to Facebook talking
about their their scientific passions
and showing how as much as we love
exploring strange new worlds through
through fiction that Earth is actually a
strange and interesting place to explore
as well and there's so much fun to work
with and they work so fast something I
actually wanted the librarians to know
more about maybe help us spread the word
we have two who are Park Rangers and
when the alt national park rangers hit
the Twitter pain these two authors Laura
pickle and apparently emily martin emily
martin thank you both have deep Park
roots they wrote short fiction that
really celebrated Park Rangers and we
got it out thanks to Angela across all
you know Harper Voyager platforms but
then the publicist left into action and
got media to support them as well
they're really sweet sweet little pieces
of fictions that extra burdens made me
cry yes it really did and they do
celebrate the park rangers and that's
just one small aspect of science another
one we have is becky chambers she's
going to be going down to orlando
shortly to speak with an astronaut so
that's really cool she'll be at the
Kennedy Space Center and that's
something that we actually like to get
out on Facebook line we're always trying
to do something interesting and
different only she's a space geek
associated is out of her mind excites
you know excited on this so very
important aspect here what are your top
picks for the summer and fall coming up
what are your highly to have hit more of
the summer books so I'll start out
Richard Kadri is out with a new Sandman
slim book he is back it's dark it's very
mad Max so if that's us anything to you
to kill society it's out june six and
then julia quinn is doing something
really different love julia quinn really
different i know like that's the one
that you're expecting to hear about from
avon but I was actually emailing with
Betty Lee Fox all weekend long because
she i centered the manuscripts at the
girl with make-believe husband on the
fly as soon as i got it oh my god it's
so much different than anything she's
ever written she's like it was so tender
and it was heartfelt and here's the
thing it takes place of course in
Edwardian period these are the
Bridgerton for bears but this story
takes place in colonial or actually
revolutionary new york so it's really
cool so don't be able to anyone who's
into the overriding hamilton mania right
now because it shows what the British
life here was like during the Revolution
and a danger of being a Brit here in New
York during the revolution so it was
stunningly well read and written and I
think you guys are all going to go gaga
over it yes definitely and that I am
crazy about paranormal
urban fiction just crazy and I couldn't
be more excited to have gotten early
copies of the manuscripts of white hot
and wild fire which is a new back to
back from ilona andrews coming out where
it's the second and third in our hidden
Legacy series which has these
super-powered primes and mages running
amok in Houston there's a secret society
that's trying to overthrow the
government and if everything you love in
ilona andrews everything you love about
Daniel's and current accept the passion
in the romance is amped up even further
and then everything about it just gets
your pulse pounding and they're so close
together so it's not like you have to
wait a year essentially that's who you
only have to wait a month one is a 530
and the other ones out 725 so librarians
probably get first is I'm reading them
yes I know there's a lot of librarian
love going on for white hot on anal Vice
right now so check out the eagle and
there's still time yeah I know as a
moyel fires going on so oh I'm so
excited ilona andrews is one of my
favorites for paranormal romance so okay
well continuing with the romance seemed
there's an author that I know it's
familiar to your viewers as they're a
Sarah mcclain kids they have the Duchess
coming out this summer and I think that
this is going to speak very highly to
what Pam was talking about earlier with
romance being a way for women to talk
about what's important to them and how
how passionate it can be because they
have Duchess opens with a woman in
Regency England demanding a divorce
because her husband doesn't treat her
right and so there's this wonderful the
man's going to have to literally get on
his knees and beg for this woman to take
him back while she makes her own demands
of how a woman should be treated and how
she should be respected I'm just an
interjection on styrofoam cuz I know
she's been with you on this program I'm
genre-bending yeah she also wants to
talk to librarians more about romance at
resistance so if you're at all
interested in connecting with this
author she's super friendly and had the
platform as she wants to share
specifically with librarians yeah so
definitely stay tuned for more from her
and if you haven't checked out her
interview on genre-bending definitely do
that it's available and up now so when
she talked a lot more about day of the
Duchess and her
on romance very cool interview a lot of
fun and then changing gears a little bit
but also coming out in July we have a
book for Wesley Snipes he has written an
urban fantasy novel called talent of God
and it's going to be a great you know
this just a cinematic ethic of really
the battle between good and evil as well
as between faith and science because
this book is set in modern day Chicago
and a holy warrior comes to a doctor in
a Chicago hospital and tells her that
she is the chosen one that she is
somebody that has great strength and
great face even though she does not
actively acknowledge it and she is going
to be kind of Chicago's last line of
defense as demons are attempting to take
over the good people of Chicago I'm
really excited about that one too it
literally reads like a blade movie in my
head like as I'm going through I can see
the action of grittiness of it and it
still has that great kind of paranormal
religion aspect too oh yeah a lot of fun
there's a lot of conversations that are
going to be able to crop up among
readers about what does it mean to be a
person of faith in the 21st century just
a geek out a little doctors tonight's
the show tonight had we had
conversations with them and he's just so
relatable and so excited about this book
and it's so cool from Voyager to be
working with Wesley Snipes yeah it's a
great addition to the list such a great
mother and end great guy yeah really and
finally this is going forward into the
fall this comes out in November from a
debut author sa chakraborty and her
debut book is called City of Brass which
is a 18th century historical fantasy
novel that set in the Middle East and
deals with all kinds of strange
mythology and a great adventure story
set in a very familiar yet very magical
place mm-hmm I love how it works in all
the mythology the gym of a genie in them
hmm it's a hot read absolutely I really
like that one cuz it's so different from
a lot of the fantasy that we have going
on today just to cust like the Middle
Eastern cutting and like all of the
minus two like religious aspects but
there's a lot there that like I'm
unfamiliar with that was really cool to
be thrown in there along with the author
has studied this time period he studied
this area of the world so she has a lot
of deep ties to this area and you can
just feel the love that she has for this
part of the world and for these stories
mm-hmm well thank you guys so much for
sharing your top picks and sharing what
you do here thank you guys for watching
and definitely check back soon for more
great stuff from genre-bending
