so i'm laurie maynard i'm senior

lecturer and also program director for

the bse honors healthcare science life

sciences program so the healthcare

science life sciences programme that we

have here at calif met is the only one

of its kind in wales it has four

accreditations and approvals as well the

health and care professions council the

institute of biomedical sciences health

education england and the royal society

of biology and these combined with the

academic and the placement elements of

the programme mean that studying

healthcare science is the quickest way

of becoming a hcpc registered biomedical

scientist within the nhs so if a student

comes to study healthcare science life

sciences here at cardiff med they are

guaranteed a placement so placements are

embedded through all three years of the

programme

and the training i was spent on those

placements are actually aligned with the

healthcare professions council and

health education's england's

requirements for training

which means that students can then

become biomedical scientists of the

future and these placements can take

place in any of our partner nhs

laboratories throughout wales

because we are the only provider in

wales this means that we send our

students out to all health boards within

the wales region so due to the nature of

the programme university

university-based practicals are embedded

into several of our modules from year

one to year three

so we start this embedding of the

laboratory work nice and early to help

build confidence of our students in the

lab environment essentially though this

also helps to build other kinds of

skills and attributes in terms of our

students achievements such as time

management and organization skills and

also teamworking so students will study

a range of different themes once they're

here and those core subjects include

things like anatomy and physiology

infection and immunity molecular biology

and genetics blood and cellular sciences

professional practice and professional

studies and also research methods and

these themes transcend from year one all

the way to year three

additionally though there are four

current specialism options within the

healthcare science program and they are

blood cellular genetic and infection

sciences so as well as doing the core

things that would teach students about

biomedical and healthcare science

generally students then study specific

specialism modules in one of those four

pathways i've just mentioned

so we are really lucky here to have an

amazing staff group that come from

different backgrounds including clinical

research and industry and those people

include world-leading researchers and

also nhs practitioners those staff can

teach the the students in the

appropriate way for those modules and we

do that through innovative and also

research-led practices
