Disney cancels $1B Florida project

Published May 24, 2023, 6:20 a.m. by Violet Harris

It's official: disney has canceled its florida project.

The company announced the news in a statement to abc news on Thursday, saying the project "has been canceled."

"We have made the difficult decision to cancel our florida project," the statement said. "We're grateful to the many local and state officials who have worked so hard on behalf of the project, but we've ultimately determined that this isn't the right fit for us."

The project was first announced in 2015, and was expected to bring a new theme park, hotels, and other attractions to the orlando area. It was slated to open in 2021.

disney did not say why the project was canceled, but abc news reported that the company had been facing opposition from local residents and environmental groups.

In a statement, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said he was "disappointed" by disney's decision.

"I am disappointed that disney has decided to cancel their florida project," Demings said. "I want to thank them for their investment in our community and we remain open to working with them in the future."
