you can't hold it in you got to talk
about it there's a lot of shame attached
to mental illness you feel like
something's wrong with you
my release therapy is writing the music
for this list
we're looking at celebs who got candid
about their own mental health
and perhaps helped others realize
they're not alone
which celebrity has inspired you the
most let us know in the comments
number 10. carrie fisher after years of
dealing with addiction
the actress was diagnosed with bipolar
disorder in her twenties
although at the time mental health
wasn't really openly discussed
fisher actively fought to break down
walls surrounding the subject
so when they i finally caught i got
sober and i was a year
sober and i never did calm down i never
you know
and everybody i'd come in with in rehab
now
uh they'd all kind of calm down
evened out and i never i was still
spinning around in chairs
she hoped that by speaking honestly
about her experiences she could help
others feel less alone
fisher was also known to broach the
subject with a sense of humor to help
break down some of the stigmas
it better get funny fast or it's just
going to be something that haunts you
so i make very difficult situations in
my life
funny as quickly as possible ultimately
her message was that
although living with mental illness can
be challenging there is
nothing to be ashamed of carrie fisher
was a jedi princess
on screen but conquering her mental
illness off screen may be her greatest
legacy number 9. selena gomez
selena gomez is no stranger to scrutiny
from the media
or the public it's hard to deal with all
that stuff that's not easy
no not that but aside from paparazzi
pressure and intense attention on her
romantic relationships
gomez has had to publicly deal with
something few former child stars have
in 2015 she revealed she'd been
diagnosed with lupus
a fact that took a toll on her physical
and mental health
i know i've kind of lived my life in a
position where people have seen a lot of
it but
this is something that's important you
know this isn't something that's
that's easy to talk about she's checked
into rehab multiple times to seek help
for burnout depression
and anxiety and while she was once
instagram's most followed user
today she avoids social media for the
sake of her own well-being
i get it i i'm constantly on things i'm
distracted by the world
and the ways of the world my generation
i think it's very difficult to be
in living in my time right now with our
girls our age it's
really hard 2020 saw her go public with
a bipolar disorder diagnosis
and through it all she's been open with
her fans about what's going on in her
life
so they feel the strength and confidence
to do the same for themselves
and so when i go to when i go to
know more information it actually helps
me it doesn't scare me once i know it
and i think people
get scared of that right they're like oh
and i've seen it and i've seen
some of it even in my own family where
i'm like what's going on
number eight pete davidson pete davidson
has always used his platform to share
his own issues with mental health and
addiction
after losing his father during 9 11 pete
spent a lot of time in and out of
treatment facilities
it's really sad and depressing to go to
rehab but like if you could get a little
crackle or a little joke out of it then
like
it's it's less painful you know what i
mean in 2016
he started experiencing episodes of rage
blacking out
and deep depression and was eventually
diagnosed with borderline personality
disorder
he's since called the diagnosis a weight
lifted off his shoulders
and advocates for people to seek help
when they need it and there's no like
cure
per se but for anyone dealing with it
there are treatments that can help
he hopes that by speaking out about his
own experiences
he can raise awareness and help others i
was super insecure
and um still am a little bit but like
got a lot got a lot better i got a lot
of help
number seven lily reinhardt i'm have a
very
unfortunately close relationship with
depression and so
feeling those emotions wasn't too
far-fetched from
my life body positivity and mental
health awareness
are two subjects that the riverdale
actress is passionate about
she uses her social media to talk about
her own experiences with depression and
anxiety
in a bid to break down the
misconceptions and stigmas surrounding
mental health
it was very hard for my parents to
understand why i hated school so much
she's talked about a time when she quote
couldn't see the light
and how she would have to cancel jobs
due to anxiety and panic attacks
i can't pretend to be happy or
fake i do that for my job so when i have
the opportunity to be real and authentic
and tell people about my actual life i
take advantage of that opportunity
not only does she find sharing
therapeutic she also strongly supports
others seeking help too
you know my parents never taught me to
be ashamed of it or that i needed to
hide it and i think the more we talk
about it the less alone we feel
lily has said that the pandemic really
helped her slow down
and finally allow her to process some of
the big changes that affected her life
number 6. dwayne the rock johnson this
megastar spoke out about his own
depression when he was a teenager
shortly after his family was evicted
from their home he saved his mother from
taking her own life
on a teenage level it's a whole other
level of emotion
uh and um and hormone
and everything that they're going
through and the weight of the world is
on teenagers
shoulder this led to periods of deep
depression where he didn't want to do
anything and he was quote crying
constantly
later an injury dashed his dreams of
becoming a professional football player
and he went through a breakup leading to
what he called the quote
absolute worst time well depression
doesn't discriminate
and i thought that that was an important
part of the narrative if i was going to
share a little bit of my story of the
past is that
you know regardless of who you are or
what you do for a living or
where you come from it doesn't
discriminate now he talks about how
important it is to pay attention to
those dealing with mental health issues
and remind them that they're not alone
and that's something he continues to do
for his fans
just gotta remember hold on to that
fundamental quality
of faith have faith
and on the other side of your pain
is something good number five lady gaga
stephanie germanotta is a strong
campaigner for mental health awareness
calling the reluctance to address the
subject quote a crisis
of epic proportions for me waking up
every day and feeling
sad and going on stage is something that
is very hard to describe the singer who
also suffers from ptsd
has called for better support within the
entertainment industry
and even launched a foundation dedicated
to the wellness of young people
we decided our mission was to build a
kinder and braver world
and that we were going to do research as
well as look for resources that were
going to help facilitate that dream
in an interview with oprah she got
candid about how not dealing with trauma
led to her hospitalization i mean
i used to do some horrible things to
myself
when i was in pain gaga also wants to
break down the biases against medication
through her music and advocacy she
continues to fight for the importance of
addressing mental health in modern life
number four elliot page it felt so
difficult to exist and
you sort of know why but you don't know
why
after shooting to stardom paige's
depression anxiety and panic attacks
were at an all-time high
he was also experiencing body dysmorphia
he felt he had to suppress his authentic
self
and revealed that the immense pressure
eventually caused him to collapse at the
inception premiere that was something
that's happened frequently in my life
usually corresponding with a panic
attack
and yeah i'm sure the two correlate and
that whole period
correlates the number of transgender
people who experience mental illness
is heartbreakingly high often due to an
unaccepting or
uncomprehending society i think there is
a lack of coverage there's a lack of
mainstream media coverage uh the degree
it's what happening
and a lack of truth quite frankly
because a lot of the time
trans people aren't even the ones you
know invited to participate or speak
hearing eliot talk about his experiences
and how he finally embraced his true
self
is so vital in helping others in the
trans community
number three kendrick lamar in 2015
the grammy award-winning rapper released
his to pimp a butterfly album
which explored subjects like depression
anxiety
addiction and resilience
[Music]
during an interview with mtv following
the album's release
lamar revealed that he was in a really
dark place while writing the songs
i've pulled that song not only from
previous experiences but
i think my whole life i think everything
is drawn out of that even even
situations from a good kid mad city
some of the tracks were inspired by his
harsh upbringing and his survivor's
guilt for getting out
you know it's a drastic change when you
you you're around so many different
faces faces that you don't
quite understand and meet different
people and
things are going on back home it's out
of your control to handle mental health
is still
so often stigmatized with many feeling
like they can't seek help
lamar recognizes the power of his
platform and
says he will use it to give a voice to
those who can't express their own
i'm a voice for everybody who can't talk
like that we can't put their words
together or express themselves on record
because even though you i might not be
talking the same exact situation
the sentiments is there and you can say
he understands you feel me
number two princess diana you may recall
seeing a picture
of me sobbing in a red coat and he went
off on his airplane
that was nothing to do with him gary the
people's princess was often considered a
pioneer when it came to breaking down
taboos
one example of this was how honest she
was about her own mental health
in her 1992 interview with andrew morton
she spoke openly and candidly about the
hardships she faced while part of the
royal family
how do i describe this it was like it
was a prisoner
who had not been allowed to speak to
anybody for 20 years
and she she was spoken a torrent the
words just
tumbled out as though she had to get the
message out before the guards came
as mental health wasn't a subject many
brits were comfortable discussing openly
she was branded as unstable and
attention-seeking and her cries for help
were ignored
however after this interview there was a
rise in the number of women who sought
treatment
today we can still see diana's legacy
live on
she could have had no idea what an
impact
she had on people i found that really
profoundly moving
before we unveil our top pick here are
some other celebrities who bravely spoke
up about mental health
ryan reynolds his wife blake lively
helps him with his anxiety
i mean back then i really didn't have a
support system that i do now i had
no outlet for that kerry washington
discussed her experiences with an eating
disorder
[Music]
zayn malik shared his experiences with
anxiety and panic attacks
i feel like i'm always trying to to work
through
whatever you know certain issues are
around certain subjects for me
personally i think it comes from a place
of
not ever wanting to come across as an
another arrogant person or a person that
takes himself too seriously
taraji p henson strongly advocates for
mental health awareness
in the african-american community it's
been such a taboo we really don't take
care of our mental we don't and we
should
um we suppress a lot you know and
it comes off as and when we do express
ourselves it comes off as rage well we
have a lot to be upset about right

number one demi lovato this star is
perhaps one of the biggest advocates for
mental health
we need to send a simple message to our
nation's leaders
mental health matters and needs and must
be taken seriously they draw on their
own experiences to educate
inspire and encourage others there were
some things
that nobody knew
i was depressed at a very very young age
fascinated with death
wondering what it would be like to have
a funeral
[Music]
i never knew why i would think so darkly
and it took me a long time to figure out
what was actually going on
from representing the be vocal
initiative in dc to creating the beyond
silence documentary
demi seeks to bust the myths biases and
stigmas surrounding mental illness
i know what it's like to have lost your
voice and i want to be the voice for
those that can't speak up for themselves
so others will see that they're not
alone the singer has vowed to keep
sharing their stories as long as it can
help others
however this all came at a cost too when
the pressures of being a role model grew
too heavy
i look at my fans as like family but
because i'd been so open and honest
about the things that i dealt with
i felt like i had to be this perfect
role model after what they called quote
a lot of self-reflective work
they revealed that they are non-binary
in 2021
hoping to encourage others to share
their truth as well i feel that this
best represents the fluidity i feel in
my gender expression and allows me to
feel most authentic and true to the
person
i both know i am and still am
discovering today
lovato talks about the value of putting
your well-being first
and understanding that everyone takes
their own mental health journey
