Kombucha SCOBY Hotel Maintenance - SCOBY care and SCOBY HOTEL - How to set up a SCOBY hotel

Published May 25, 2023, 9:20 p.m. by Bethany

kombucha is a fermented tea that has been around for centuries. The fermentation process creates a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast (scoby) that is responsible for the health benefits associated with kombucha.

A scoby hotel is a great way to maintain a healthy colony of SCOBYs and have a continuous supply of kombucha. Setting up a scoby hotel is easy and only requires a few simple ingredients.

Here’s what you’ll need:

-1 cup of strong brewed kombucha tea

-1 scoby per jar

-1 cup of sugar

-1 cup of water

-1 clean and sterilized jar per scoby

To set up your scoby hotel, simply brew a strong batch of kombucha tea and add a scoby to each jar. Then, add sugar and water to each jar, making sure to stir well.

Cover each jar with a coffee filter or cloth and secure with a rubber band. Store your scoby hotel in a cool, dark place and allow the SCOBYs to ferment for at least 2 weeks.

After 2 weeks, you can remove any SCOBYs you want to use to make kombucha and replace them with fresh SCOBYs. Be sure to save some kombucha tea from each batch to use as a starter for your next batch.

following are some tips for taking care of your scoby hotel:

-It is important to use clean and sterilized jars for your scoby hotel. Be sure to wash them well with hot water and soap before using.

-It is also important to use filtered or distilled water when making your kombucha tea. This will help to ensure that your SCOBYs stay healthy.

-Be sure to keep your scoby hotel in a cool, dark place. A cupboard or pantry is a great location.

-It is important to check on your scoby hotel every few weeks to make sure that the SCOBYs are still alive and healthy. If you see any mold or other signs of contamination, it is best to throw out the entire batch and start over.

By following these simple tips, you can easily maintain a healthy colony of SCOBYs and have a continuous supply of kombucha.

[Music]

welcome back to another episode of

plant-based dads i'm tim

and today is the second edition of um

our

playlist for making kombucha and it's

about scoby maintenance

and hotel maintenance so i thought i'd

show you this just because i haven't

really seen a lot of people show that in

what i've learned okay so this is one of

those where i have a white

jar so i've used a bungee cord you've

seen i'm using the flower sock towel

again

okay every time you make kombucha

a new scoby is created and so i just

have this jar to keep that but also

this liquid is also a starter that i use

for a new batch of kombucha to to

ferment

so that's why this is good to have the

second reason is

i want those extra scobies to use in

experimenting other things where i can't

reuse that scoby anymore

so there is value in having all these

different scobies

as scobies go on they they need help

so i wanted to show you so again i'm

using clean hands you guys

see how the scoby looks vibrant it's

it's whitish with some yellow

underneath it gets a little darker

yellow

so this particular one it's already

splitting so i can

tear it down the middle like that and

now i have a new scoby that will develop

you can see this bigger scoby that was

developed from a smaller one from those

smaller

jars just wanted to show you that's why

i broke that off

everything's just fine

so this is the maintenance part that i

wanted to show you when

yeast overgrows this is this dark stuff

and i'm just gonna take this off

but sometimes you might see long strands

of it

mine isn't too bad but i'm just gonna

show you what it looks like there

so that you can remove that

things are looking good pretty good so

far

[Music]

it's a little darker maybe that's been

used so we didn't get to talk about this

in the last video but

scoby's maybe have a lifetime use of

maybe like

some say four some will say 10. you

definitely want to do a rotation of your

scobies so we're just we're taking

all these out it's time to feed the

scoby hotel

and i do that maybe just once a month or

once every five weeks

that's what we're doing so we're taking

these out and this will give me a chance

to clean

this out and give a fresh pitcher of

of tea again and sugar so it has a few

but it's otherwise this is very acidic

this is the ideal environment for it so

you've seen me with the scoby's take off

that

added yeast i've split scobys where i

needed to

so now comes cleaning of the scoby hotel

this jar i want to save some of this

liquid this has the bacteria in it

the yeast that i need so i'm going to

pour some in this bowl

that will pour back in here once we have

it cleaned

[Music]

okay so i have my reserved tea with

bacteria and yeast as a starter or

feeder

this is perfect ready to go so with this

remaining amount

i'm going to now dump and we're going to

wash this and i'm going to wash this

with soap

water and then i'll really rinse it well

and then we want to do a rinse with some

vinegar you can just tell like there's

some

tea and yeast stuck to the sides and i

want to get rid of that

once i come back with this clean pitcher

then

we're going to start over again with our

sweet tea

sugar added then i'll add this back to

it

remember this fluid is this liquid is

our starter as well

as the scoby's so again that's what i'm

doing every five weeks

just to keep a healthy hotel

all right our scoby hotel has been

cleaned with soap and water

rinsed multiple times now i've just

poured some apple cider vinegar on

a little towel here and i'm just going

to go over

the seam again clean hands

now that we've got everything clean

let's add our new

sweet tea and then our

liquid that's our starter and then our

scobys okay all going back in here again

hands are clean

[Music]

i know this seems so gross but you know

the good that it does it's actually like

our friend so you're probably wondering

why do i have my waste

from the yeast still on the counter

because i'm actually gonna

put this in some potted plants some

trees that i've got outside

that is one my use i've heard people

giving

parts of these to their pets so again

really healthy

there is skin care for this as well i'm

not privy to that but

for the plants this is going to be great

so again nothing's going to waste and

everything we're growing here

kind of fantastic so i love that

all right we're going to pour this

and then we brewed a little tea earlier

with our sugar

[Music]

again i've added enough sugar i made the

super tea

so i can add some more filtered water to

this and it's going to be fun

[Music]

okay i'm happy with this volume

so we're going to cover up

[Music]

perfect she's covered bungee cords

secure

she's going to go back on her shelf and

and she'll be happy because of all this

darkness well

that concludes this video on scoby

maintenance scoby hotel maintenance
