In 1976, The Entertainer was used as the soundtrack to the film The Sting, for which it won an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
The Entertainer is a Ragtime two step in C major. The piece is in ternary form, consisting of an A section in bars 1-16, a B section in bars 17-24, and a return to the A section in bars 25-32.
The A section is built on a I-IV-V-I chord progression, with the melody primarily in the right hand. The B section features a more syncopated melody in the left hand, while the right hand plays a simple accompaniment. The piece returns to the A section in the final 8 bars.
The Entertainer is one of the most popular piano pieces of all time, and has been covered by a wide range of artists, from Scott Joplin himself to classical pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff.
