I couldn't find any jobs after art school.
I was in my final year of university, about to graduate with a BFA in illustration. I had been working hard for four years and was ready to embark on my career as a professional artist. But then, the recession hit.
The job market dried up overnight and I found myself competing against hundreds of other artists for a handful of jobs. I soon realized that a degree in art was no guarantee of employment.
I had to find another way to make a living.
So, I started my own business.
I began freelancing as an illustrator and graphic designer. I also started teaching art classes and workshops. I did whatever I could to make a living from my art.
It wasn't easy, but I eventually made it work.
Now, I'm happy to say that I'm doing what I love for a living. I'm proof that you can make a career out of art, even in tough economic times.
