Mental Health Crisis in Real Estate Profession - How to Help

Published May 9, 2023, 10:40 a.m. by Courtney

When it comes to the real estate industry, it is no secret that there is a mental health crisis occurring. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five Americans suffers from a mental illness. And, in the real estate profession, this number is even higher- one in three real estate professionals may suffer from a mental illness at some point in their career.

For many people, the thought of working in the real estate industry can be daunting. It is a highly competitive field, and there is a lot of pressure to succeed. This pressure can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression. In fact, according to the NAMI, one in five real estate professionals has suffered from a mental illness in the past.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a mental illness, there is help available. There are resources available to you, including support groups and counseling. If you are feeling suicidal, please reach out for help. Suicide is not a solution to any problem, and it is never worth risking your life.

Hello, friends Leigh Brown here with One Community  Real Estate® and welcome back to the REALTOR

tips series. Now normally this is to give y'all a  little bit of insight on buying and selling houses

condos and everything else out there. Today this  is for my REALTORS. So if you're watching this

and you're not a REALTOR share this with your  favorites or even the ones you don't like that

much from church or from the carpool, your  brother-in-law. In specific the REALTOR who

helped you buy and sell your house. If you're a  REALTOR watching this please share this with one

of your colleagues that you love and respect  and even if you don't love and respect them

share it with them anyway because we're going to  talk about something uncomfortable and that is

the mental wellness / mental health crisis that's  going on amongst REALTORS. Now you're thinking but

why would REALTORS have a crisis, Leigh Brown?  They've had it so good - the economic sector's

been on fire and they're doing great. Actually,  we just don't have enough inventory out there in

the nation and we have the most REALTORS ever. It  is the most competitive market any of us have ever

seen now what does that mean that means that your  REALTORS that you love are working seven days a

week. They're working 10, 12, 16 hours a day trying  to help buyers win bidding wars they're trying

to help sellers figure out how to get the house  maximized and where is that seller going to go

next REALTORS are coming up with solutions and  logistics plans that we've never had to come up

with before and we do it with a smile on our face  just like Ginger Rogers dancing

backward in high heels. But what does that mean to  the REALTORS that are out there? It means they're

burned out and exhausted and they're having to  put a positive face on social media because that's

what the world expects but I want you to know that  it's okay to admit if you're burned out. It's okay

to admit if you're feeling a little bit sideways  and your stomach hurts a little bit when the phone

rings and one of the things you should know is  that first of all the National Association of

REALTORS® the "R" that you wear has two months  of TeleHealth included for you right now you

just got to go to the link here in this video  and take advantage of that benefit now why do

I suggest that TeleHealth option because friends  there is a mental health option attached to that

so I don't know what you need. I don't know who  you are. All I know is that you are so important

because every neighbor and every zip code does  better when they have a REALTOR at their side

and it's my job as a realtor to make sure that  we have REALTORS in every zip code to tell every

neighbor what the pathway looks like to get to  home ownership and business ownership and we have

to do that with you at your best so go to this  link get that two months of TeleHealth. And by the

way if you're a North Carolina REALTOR® you should  know that we have insurance benefits available now

thanks to the work that the REALTOR Association  did with the legislature a couple of years ago

and the work that our staff has done to bring it  up out of the ground it is a wonderful place to

get a quote to supplement what you have at your  house or maybe to replace what you currently have

at a better cost, because we are definitely  stronger when we look after each other and

figure out how to work together. So what I want  you to do is click on these links you're for

your North Carolina REALTOR we've got your  link for benefits, if you are an NAR member

we've got a link for you to go to as well take  advantage of this. And if you're feeling hopeless

and lost please check out the National Suicide  Prevention hotline 800-273-8255 because you

matter so much and if you think you don't matter  to anybody, just know this – YOU MATTER to this girl

in North Carolina and I will do everything I  can to make sure that my neighbors are always

protected by having a REALTOR at their side  from now until forever. I'll see you next time.

you
