traditional medicines there are however

federal law this chapter will address

the distinctions among these

emerging products categories the dietary

supplement definition the federal food

drug and cosmetic fdca is the law that

covers food drugs medical devices and

cosmetics there are many state laws that

also cover these products but most

follow the mdca lead the mpca was

amended by the rightful supplement

health and education at bs shia in 1994

to add a dietary supplement category to

the existing food drug parent diet no

state has passed a dietary supplement

law so that category is recognized

officially on the federal level a

dietary cell

supplement is a product other than

tobacco that is intended to supplement

the diet and that contains one or more

of these dietary ingredients

supplements the passage of the dietary

supplement health and education act of

1994

and growth of the dietary supplement

market have led to a parallel boom in

the relief of conventional foods with

added dietary ingredients of functional

foods also variously called

nutraceuticals functional foods have

been defined as those foods or food

ingredients that may provide a health

benefit beyond the traditional nutri

nutrients it contains in this sense this

category represents a cross between

dietary supplements and conventional

food products

the classic examples of functional foods

on the u.s market

are margarines that contain phytosterols

and

and claim an effect on cholesterol

levels for example

mcniel's consumer health benefits

take control products many other

products containing functional

ingredients also have appeared including

serial bars with bone building

ingredients biscuits intended as

digestive aids and snacks fortified with

fiber antioxidants and or vitamins even

bottled waters have embraced the

possibilities inherent in the functional

food category

and first vehicles have been introduced

with added ingredients such as caffeine

calcium and antioxidants the functional

food concept originated in japan in the

mid-1980s to refer to processed foods

containing ingredients that aid specific

bodily functions to date japan is the

only country that has formulated a

specific regulatory approval process for

functional foods known as food for a

specified

from the japanese ministry of health and

welfare currently 100 products are

licensed and this book is kind of an old

book when i was in johns hopkins and i

did a course

then i bought this book and if you need

more about this this is the book and it

is from the food and drug uh

the growth of functional foods in the

u.s market has stemmed in part from

manufacturers desire to take advantage

of the claims and product categories

well available to that supplement the

category however lacks a formal

definition or any clear regulatory

framework in the united states even

though functional foods can contain

the same dietary ingredients as dietary

supplements functional foods are not

covered by the

regulatory framework because they do not

meet the statutory definition of dietary

supplement instead functional foods fall

into the journal conventional food

category and the food and drug

administration mpa evaluates them under

existing laws and regulations applying

to that category the net result is

somewhat different standard for safety

and claims for the same ingredients used

in food or dietary supplements despite

the regulatory constraints that come

from being in the conventional food

category the potential growth for

functional foods appears to be large

u.s food industry and have been

embraced by health conscious baby donors
