what's going on youtube today we're
taking a look at a very cool product
from gli net and their travel routers
have been in my bag ever since i first
laid eyes on them it's a great way to
mask your location it's a great way to
work remotely without your boss knowing
where you are that's definitely a plus
these days maybe you're on an island
somewhere and you want to pretend like
you're back in the states or no matter
where you want to pretend you are the
travel route is going to let you do that
if you're just roaming the country and
you're doing those airbnbs or using
those free wi-fi access points your
information could be at risk i actually
got my information hacked when i was
using airbnb wi-fi so you just never
know who's monitoring that traffic this
is a great way to keep it protected
great way to encrypt all of your data
thanks to the vpn protocols wireguard
supported openvpn supported it's gonna
block ads and do a whole bunch more
let's take a look at the new wi-fi 6
wireless travel router from gla
this is gli net's latest travel router
and if you travel a lot you definitely
don't want to use open wi-fi even if
you're at that hotel you never know
who's who's monitoring that traffic
there could be someone behind the scenes
trying to steal all your information and
it's a great way again to mask your
location working remotely from an island
somewhere is much better than working in
new york city so this is going to let
you kind of switch out your location if
you want to wi-fi 6 means that you're
going to have fast wi-fi 6-speeds with
compatible devices it is running open
wrt for the os 3 gigabit lan ports usb 3
port encryption again thanks to thanks
to openvpn and thanks to wireguard and
thanks to tor and you also get ipv6 and
ad guard home which is going to block
all those annoying ads on the internet
and that's constantly updated so that's
a great addition to these wi-fi six
travel routers inside you get a little
documentation as usual
and let's take a look at what the new
wi-fi six router looks like
definitely really really cool now it is
a little bit larger than the other
editions so we started out with the
original slate so it's definitely a
little bit bigger than that and this is
barrel it's a tiny bit bigger than
barrel but again this is wi-fi six so
you're gonna get a lot a lot faster
speeds with this on the side of the
router you also have a micro sd card
slot capable of up to 512 gigabytes of
storage so it's perfect for shared drive
if you wanted to put that onto the slate
router on the back powered by usbc of
course here's your usb 3 port so you can
connect the usb modem to this if you
wanted to you can also use this to add a
pen drive for attached storage three
gigabit lan ports one can be used as a
wan so if you want to hardwire this you
can can also be used as a repeater this
all sounds a little bit a little bit too
complicated i'm going to show you how to
do it no worries about that
and then you have your configurable
switch as well as your power button and
reset button right there it's going to
be a nice led logo on the front i'm sure
about that but let's see what else we
get inside here flat ethernet cable
and here's your power for usbc but
thanks to usbc of things just go ahead
and connect the usbc with a power bank
or even with your even with your phone's
charger and you'll be able to charge
this up without any issue logging into
the admin control panel for the new
slate router ax this is what you're
going to see so right on the left you're
going to see how you're actually
connected right now i'm using it in
repeater mode so you can see that right
here but you can plug in that ethernet
cable and use it that way you can also
tether your mobile device's connection
or use a usb cellular modem to connect
to the slate router and you also get to
see your shields of protection here so i
do have ad guard home running i also
have my vpn shield of protection so my
vpn is active i did not activate ipv6
but if you do you'll see that lit up
right over here and then on the bottom
you'll see all of your
all of your ssids for your two main
networks as well as your two guest
networks as well so i like the fact that
we have a main network as well as a
guest network how many wireless lan
clients you have and how many lan
clients scrolling down this is where
you'll be able to see what network
you're actually rebroadcasting what
network you're connected to and you can
switch networks very easily just
clicking on switch network and then it's
going to scan for all available wi-fi
networks around you once you find the
one that you want to connect to just
click on it enter in the password enter
in those credentials and then you just
click connect and you're going to start
repeating that network right away
perfect for starbucks perfect for the
hotel motel holiday inn it's just
overall a great product and it's very
easily navigatable now clicking on
wireless this where you configure your
wi-fi networks for both your main and
your guest networks so very
self-explanatory there under clients
you'll see how many clients you have
connected you can also block them so if
you don't want them to access the
internet you can block them and you can
also limit their speed if you want to so
perfect for co-working perfect for
sharing your internet but not really
sharing it you can just limit what their
upload and download speed is going to be
you do have automatic updates and gli
net is usually really good with their
firmware updates so expect quite a few
when you buy one of their products
under firewall you can enable port
forwards you can open ports and you can
have a dmz host as well so you do have a
lot of configurable actions on the
travel router as plug and play as you
want or as advanced as you want as well
now the vpn tab is where you're going to
spend most of your time 100 for sure so
taking a look at the vpn dashboard which
is new this year with the slate ax you
get to see everything in one place so i
definitely like the way that they've
done this you'll see your open vpn
connections as well as your wire guard
connections which i'm actually connected
to right now and if you want to switch
them click on that and it's going to
show you all of your available
connections here so this is just
something really cool and and i like
what they've done they've just made it a
little bit more modern and the same goes
with the server so you can have a server
and a client running at the same time
when it comes to speed on the slate ax
let's just do a quick quick baseline for
our speed test now this is just
connected to my isp directly this is
going to give us a baseline of what my
speed should be so let's kind of take a
look at that we're maxing out a little
bit over 200 megabits a second 230 so
it's climbing just a little bit now keep
in mind wire guard is going to give you
a maximum of 550 megabits down open vpn
is about 120 so that's why i recommend
torguard because they do have a very
fast wire guard server so if you don't
yet have one once again use code jabber
tech save yourself 50 off for life but
during our speed test it actually sped
up to about 300 megabits down
that's something really impressive so
now what we're going to do is connect
over to this slate ax and then do a
speed test with wire guard and then i'll
do a speed test with openvpn even though
we should max out at about 120. we take
a look at our speeds and do one more as
we talk about it 225 megabits down so it
is usual to lose a little bit when you
when you use a device in repeater mode
it's just an extra extra hop
second speed test i got 240.
i've connected over to openvpn and once
again
i have masked my location so now any
device that's connected is going to show
me being in las vegas nevada perfect
perfect solution for remote work or any
type of any type of masking location so
let's go ahead and click on a speed test
las vegas is a little bit far from new
york at the moment but let's see what
type of speeds we're going to get here
and keep in mind i did max out about
300. so openvpn i'm getting about let's
call it 40 megabits down when this is
completed so once again guys i really
recommend wireguard it's just a faster
protocol and it's just overall something
something that i would recommend but in
terms of speed that one you can expect a
maximum of 120 for openvpn and a maximum
of 550 for wireguard so i'm just going
to switch back over to wireguard
now i also do have it set up where i can
block non-vpn traffic now i think that's
basically the kill switch so you can
enable that if you want to and you can
have the gl net services not to use the
vpn so if you want to connect remotely
with their good cloud service that's a
good option to check now that we've gone
over the vpn speeds to add your own your
own configuration file they do have nord
as an option already built in and i do
have some coupons down there to save you
guys a little bit of coin with nord as
well i like torguard i've been using
them for about four years so that's
really what i recommend so you get both
openvpn and you also get wireguard as
well and you can also choose from
streaming ips or residential ip if you
want a static ip address while using a
vpn they have those options and you can
also save 50 off for life if you use
code jabber tech so for only about 4.99
a month you can get a vpn service not
really that bad
but what i like about it is it's also
very easy to get configuration files
thanks to their configuration tool all
you have to do is choose either openvpn
or wireguard and then select on what
server you want to connect to so maybe
you want to connect to miami and you can
leave all of this in its default unless
you want to switch over you can switch
over whatever you want but then just
click on generate config it's going to
download it for you right away and then
just go back to the gla net open vpn
client or your wire guard client
configuration click on new group so i'm
going to call this one miami
and then find that file that we just
downloaded enter in your username and
password and you're all set so it
couldn't be any easier thanks to having
that tour guard configuration tool and
thanks to gli net for making it really
simple to add your wireguard client or
to add your openvpn client so that's
basically all you have to do guys and to
set up a server it's a one-click
solution as well click on start and
you're gonna start your your wireguard
server very very simply so this is your
vpn dashboard probably the most place
you're gonna spend the most amount of
time when you buy one of these routers
again you can use it without a vpn so if
you just wanted to use this as a
repeater if you just wanted to use your
own your own isp you don't have to use a
vpn
now going down to applications just a
few things i do want to show you you do
have some plug-ins here so you can go in
and you can download a plug-in if you
want to quite honestly i've never
downloaded any extra plug-ins they they
pretty much give you everything that you
need you also have the option for
dynamic dns and then good cloud is their
remote access so you can access some of
these settings remotely if you wanted to
leaving this in your home office and
then connecting remotely to see who's
connected limit their speed etc etc you
can go ahead and do that with their good
cloud service but at guard home is is
one of the best features and thankfully
it is installed right out of the box at
guard home is going to block basically
everything that's blockable on the web
you can go ahead and block it can also
block malware and phishing sites and you
can block adult websites if you guys
want to
but what i like about it is you can just
end there or you can go in and you can
add your own block list if you want to
you can choose from the list and they do
offer quite a number of lists here so if
you wanted to really get in and block
what you want to block you can go ahead
and do that and you can also add your
own custom list as well and there's a
whitelist feature but you can allow
certain websites if you notice they're
being blocked you can add it right there
there's a lot of settings from within ad
guard home as well just take your time
with it figure it out and you're going
to be surfing faster in no time thanks
to blocking all of those annoying ads
you also have that usb port that can be
used for network storage and you can
have shared folders and you can create
users to access those files as well so
perfect for that co-working type of
environment if you want everyone to be
able to access a certain folder a
certain file so you can all work on it
you can go ahead and enable network
storage if you want to the toggle button
setting is that little button on the
side of the router and it basically just
allows you to turn on or off blocking
ads with ad guard home or activate your
vpn service all by just toggling that
switch so you don't have to log into the
router to do so that's just kind of like
a
a quick way to go ahead and activate
certain things that you want to activate
and that's basically it when it comes to
the settings that's everything that you
guys need to know again says plug and
play as you want or as advanced as you
want it to be this has been a look at
gli net's latest offering their slate ax
travel router and as someone who uses a
lot of open wi-fi and someone who uses a
lot of airbnb wi-fi and as someone who
definitely doesn't want to pay for
anything when i go to a hotel this has
been my perfect travel buddy if you're
looking to create your own secure
network if you're looking to create your
own private network within a network
look no further than gla net's travel
router it's a great addition to anyone's
travel bag and it's something i could
recommend if you have any questions
about it let me know down in the
comments below they also do sell a nice
travel bag so you can always keep your
slate router protected keep all your
peripherals your cables and whatnot
right in the little pouch right there i
always appreciate you guys watching
thumbs up subscribe and i'll catch you
