hey guys I'm Andrea and this is my
second video about everything science
fiction and fantasy today I will talk
about the different mediums of sci-fi
and fantasy stories I know there are all
different kinds but I've just picked up
the main three the ones that I'm most
familiar with and the ones that you guys
probably know best - books movies and TV
shows each one really affects how you
experience the story that you're being
told and I think sci-fi and fantasy more
than any other genre really put to good
use
the bad and the good of the different
mediums first let's talk about books
this is obviously the oldest of the
three and what books give you that the
other two really can't is imagination no
matter how descriptive the author gets
you still ultimately have the final say
and with the people and the creatures
and the settings and everything is like
you can even choose how to pronounce
names and terms and you can decide how a
character talks to an extent like their
speed and their pitch and their style it
gets even more fun when the out there
leaves a little room for interpretation
because then you get to go crazy but
regardless how do you tell the stories
presented your version is still gonna be
a little different from your friends or
from your parents or from some famous
movie director who then was to turn it
into a movie as an example I'm gonna use
one of the most widespread fantasy
series like ever Harry Potter I know
you've at least heard of it in the fifth
book the order of the Phoenix JK Rowling
introduces these creatures called
thestrals and the way she describes them
is harry compares them to horses and
then says that there's something
reptilian about them - they're
completely fleshless they're black coats
cling to their skeletons their heads
were dragonish and their pupil is eyes
white and staring wings sprouted from
each wither vast black leathery wings
and Harry thinks they look eerie and
sinister alright if you see the movies
pretend you haven't with just that
description would you have pictured this
something like it were you way off this
is what a whole team of artists and
animators and designers that's what they
came up with based on the exact same
description that you got but I'm
guessing your idea wasn't exactly the
same before the movies and maybe even
still there were hundreds of versions of
this creature another pro of books is
that they have a little room to kind of
introduce their story concept to you
movies have limited time constraints
which means that they often have to cut
out a lot of stuff whereas books can
throw in all kinds of little details
throughout the story or they can even
dedicate paragraphs upon paragraphs to
one specific thing yes I am thinking
the Rings right now next we have movies
probably the greatest Pro in my opinion
of movies is that they have the ability
to grab your attention with vision and
sound the visual aspects of movies in
these genres can be absolutely
mind-blowing
let's take inception for example sure it
has a great complex plot which
translates well into any medium but
would it really be able to capture the
same effect if it were a book the dream
sequence for example with Ariadne when
she like defends the street I mean come
on or what about the antigravity fight
scene when the room is turning all
around and making you dizzy or just the
shores of limbo where the buildings are
falling apart and everything's just
crumbling the visuals are stunning I
just can't imagine that written
descriptions of these scenes would have
near the impact as the movie can as for
the sound of the music the sound effects
the voices everything works together to
create this place this alternate world
take a look at the Rings for example on
top of absolutely beautiful imagery they
have one of the best soundtracks that I
have ever heard it ranges from
light-hearted for the hobbits to
mysterious for the elves creepy for
Gollum completely epic for battles one I
mean I could go on forever
you also have voices for characters and
the different creatures like for example
the horrible grunts and growls of the
orcs Mahmood okay with sight and sound
the fictional world comes to life right
in front of you of course you have less
control over it but isn't it kind of fun
sometimes just to kind of let yourself
fall into someone else's imagination if
of course you don't like the directors
or the actors of the designers vision
then that's kind of where movies can be
a bit of a drawback another obvious
Colin is the time crunch movies probably
faces the worst even if it's not a movie
adaptation of a book usually if a
fantasy or sci-fi world is worth jumping
into it's gonna be kind of complex so
you have to spend some time on world
building that another movie like a
modern-day mystery or romance Quinn said
dedicate to character and plot
development this genre was really not
made for two hours the last category is
TV shows they have the same Pro as
movies when it comes to visuals and
sounds their biggest advantage though is
the multi episode experience most TV
shows have at least one season or two or
three or four or ten that means that the
fictional world has all that time to
grow we get to start gradually just dip
our toes in a bit but then by the end
ideally we've completely lost ourselves
in fantasy these episodes also give you
the opportunity to bond with the
characters so the entire story just has
room to grow and expand a con for shows
though
is that because of the episode format
the story has to be told in segments so
even if it's following a longer plot
idea each episode has to be kind of a
mini adventure not all stories can be
told like that another con is budget
honestly shows don't get the money that
movies do and for sci-fi and fantasy
some of the most important elements are
going to be the inventing stuff the
stuff that you need special effects and
stunts to pull off one of my favorite
series is Doctor Who but some of the
aliens are kind of clunky and it's
pretty obvious when they use special
effects for things obviously this show
doesn't need it special effects to be
seamless because it's just fantastic on
so many other counts but for other
fantasy and sci-fi shows this can be a
serious drawback to enjoying the story
so there are a few of the pros and cons
that I've collected and the comments
section let me know if you guys have any
others tied to these because I know
there are more I'd also like to know
what's your favorite of these three if
you can pick a favorite and why if you
enjoyed this video I want to see more
like it make sure you like favorite
share and vote thanks so much for
watching and I will see you in another
video
