first of all thanks for tuning in for

today for the first being a football

agent and inside the business and the

first episode today is called

getting into the business I think it was

important for me to start with this one

because this is the most difficult part

for any of you who want to come into the

business it's really not easy the first

steps and a lot of people are asking me

hey I could how did you actually get

into the business

what was your way to get into it and how

can we actually get into the business so

that's something for me very important

to explain you that's why I thought I

start today with this episode to show

you how you if you are interested of

becoming a football agent or a sports

agent right or a talent agent whatever

you call it or an intermediary so I'll

explain you how you can do it yeah so

and I will give you as examples of other

agent how they did how they actually got

into the business so it will makes it

even easier to see it Hey so wait a

minute some people made it how did they

made it what was their journey and if

you see that it's actually not that

difficult because things as long as you

don't see it really you think it's very

difficult and I will show you today is

not that difficult you can make it yeah

so that's the goal so for this I have a

small presentation which I will show you

during the talk so you can full of it

and I will go deeper into it yeah so

how other agents have got into the

business I've already mentioned it I

will show you different stages of or

different groups of agents how they made

it it's very interesting so listen to

that part very carefully and I think

it's one of the most important parts

next part will be then it's my journey

so that's what a lot of people asking

hey I could how did you ended up

becoming a football agent so and I will

explain you it's possible and then I

explained you how I made it so you have

an example so you can see oh okay he

used that way so hopefully that will

into the industry and how you can get an

questions but I hope the questions are

about the commission of an agent so you

can ask me these things over there but

today it's really about what kind of

ways are there that you can get into the

business I want to talk really more

about that so let's move on thinking

presentation I made 5 groups of agents

alright I meet the self-made agents so

you you have the family member of

friends they have an agent who has a

family member or a friend in the

business then you have other areas of

football where people join from a

different area of football was working

in a football club and then became an

agent yeah so they have agents like that

today in the business we will talk a

little bit about them then there are

agents who are coming from another

profession so used to be lawyer today in

agent so they're also these kind of

examples and finally I want to talk a

little bit about the so called breakaway

agents

what is breakaway agents that's

interesting so breakaway agents agents

today well-known but they were working

as a scout or is an introducer or or

something like that or day-to-day

manager in another agency they made

their experiences over there and then

they took some of the players from that

agency usually and then they create

their own agency and - they represent

big players so we talk as well about

that so that's kind of the goal for

today yeah so to explain you on on the

groups of the agents so let's start with

the self-made agents so most of you you

hear the names and the business right

when you go when you read the news about

the big agents there's some self-made

agents you hear probably

every day so I tell you who they are so

Jorge Mendes P Nizar Harvey

Mino Raiola and Jonathan Barnett so I

will talk today about these four

self-made agents they're more yeah but I

will just remain that these four because

we don't have any less time today to

talk about more so today we will talk

about these four big agents you can call

them really big big agents they're

really influential they represent big

players and they're in the game for a

long time so let's start the Jorge

Mendes Jorge Mendes as most of you known

as the agent of Cristiano Ronaldo that's

what everyone knows right Jorge Mendes

everyone knows he's Portuguese right and

he represents a lot of players besides

Cristiano Ronaldo or also he is the

agent of which coach Tottenham coach

yeah Mourinho he is also the agent of a

coach for more coaches right so as you

can see already interesting as an agent

I will talk in next episodes you're not

just representing players you can also

represent coaches very interesting so is

there a conflict of interest or not we

will talk about that in the next future

episodes as well yeah it's also very

interesting area because one thing ahead

here to represent a coach you don't need

a license again you don't need any

license to be a coach agent right there

is no system for coach agents so it

could be done by anyone right okay but

leave the coach agents let's move on

let's talk with about Chris I bought

Jorge Mendes the mega super agent George

Mendes called in the business as well

the businessman the business agent so

how did he start how did he end up

becoming a football agent alright how

did Jorge Mendes so self mate because he

helped his family a lot when he was

younger and was working at the beach

yeah he was selling clothing he was

working in beach clubs he was working

hard with selling and buying stuff

already he was trading he was trading in

a very young age and helping the family

and then he was in the entertainment

business my clubs beach clubs that means

he's meeting people and there he used

his kind of network meeting people and

Nuno Gomes the coach

today was his first client he was a kid

he was a goalkeeper and that was his

first client he brought him a to a club

so that's how Jorge Mendes started

getting into the business so he made his

way through he worked hard for it he

came from somewhere and made it to

something so it's not very easy what he

did yeah this is about Jorge Mendes a

so-called self-made agent the next

self-made agent is pini Zahabi probably

a lot of you heard his name as well a

very influential angel very powerful

agent very knowledgeable agent and is

therefore since his first deal listen he

made the 1979

I wasn't born that imagine he did his

first deal if some of you maybe know it

avi Cohen he brought from Maccabi Tel

Aviv he brought him over to Liverpool

that was his entry into the business and

his first deal but how did he start it

how did penes are they end up an agent

today also representing players like

Neymar it was in he was a part of the

deal to going to PSG right they say he

was also the guy who brought Abramovich

to buy Chelsea so if again an

interesting part for an agent for you in

futures working as a deal brokered

football that means doing M&A bringing

parties together and helping them to buy

a football club get a commission and get

out again very interesting area it's not

regulated anyone can do it like I said

you can represent a football coach is

not relegated you can help

businesspeople to buy a football club

because you have the network you get

your commission out of it again as an

agent you can do that as well that's

what penes a hobby did they say that

Roman Abramovich when he bought Chelsea

so but how did he get into it in this

agents business he was a journalist so

he needs a hobby was actually a

journalist so using his network in that

area brought him where he is today

called also maybe the father of the

business the first agent like on that

Mac magnitude very powerful agent in the

business so that's about Pini Zahavi I'm

seeing more and more people joining it

looks nice

was one year old to Holland to the

Netherlands so mineral I actually grew

up in the Netherlands and he was working

in the restaurant of his father so he

was in that business he was helping his

father like a family business yeah

what mineral wa has is very interesting

well not many agent has this language

skill skill mineral speak so many

different languages and he used this

language skill to be successful in what

he is doing today

yeah he's between a lot of languages and

he used it as well for his business

before becoming an agent as in

translating for businesspeople so that's

what he did

interestingly he also studied two years

law but then he dropped out from

University and worked for some agencies

and and then eventually he is today what

he is and who he is and everyone knows

him as Minori ola who represents big

players right and also known as the

agent who defends this client till the

end yeah that you can say about me no

rival in the business and maybe we talk

about one thing very quickly mineral Ola

did probably one of the biggest deal

in football history on the on the agents

Commission site we will talk about that

it's very controversial a lot of people

I would say talking about that or being

even angry about that while he was doing

his deal for Papa from Juventus to

Manchester United yeah

so the Commission was very high and

people complain about that a lot what I

say is if the regulations which are

there clear and if they give someone the

opportunity to make a lot of money and

if that person makes a lot of money we

can't complain

so either you change regulations or you

can't complain about that someone is

really maximizing his income like being

very successful in what is they but this

is a topic for another day I will talk

about that with you and I will go more

into detail about that because it's a

very interesting topic full of people to

talk about that mineral lobby talk so

it's a lien let's go to an English agent

very successful as well Jonathan Barnett

or known for many as a stellar group

very interestingly how did he come up

into this business how did he end up

becoming a football agent so Jonathan

Barnett very interesting he actually

started first as a cricket agent so very

interesting again they started first as

a cricket agent which is friends David

Mineta David Manisha very interestingly

is one of the key figures if not the key

figure behind Stella a very successful

agent between the seller group very well

known in contracts so he is the running

figure or the running guy actually so

not many people know him for Stella

maybe but not many people of people know

Jonathan Barnett but I think credit to

David Manasa it's very well known and

very good in contracts and the key

figure I think in that agency and yeah

so his big clients Oh Jonathan Barnett

or Stella gurus big client most of you

know is bail so he brought bail from

Tottenham as he node to Real Madrid that

was probably the biggest deal they have

done so far if maybe they have done

another one in that magnitude I don't

know but that was quite big and that's

his

he's representing and interestingly for

them so there they do now other sports

as well

they went from cricket into football and

now they're representing clients in

other sports as well so for you you can

see you can start in another sport and

you can end up in football or the other

way around yeah so these are the

self-made agents so I wanted to explain

you there are agents out there how they

started is really fighting hard from

minute one you know you know work every

day to break through into this business

yeah these are the so-called self-made

agents let's move on you finished the

self-made agents let's move on to the

family member or friend agent that's a

very interesting part I think that's

more interesting than the self-made

agents guys who are these people these

people are they have a relative so a

family member or a very good friend in

the football business which helps them

to become an agent and use that network

that relationship to do deals yeah let's

go and look who are these people so I

will tell you some names and let's say

if you remember these names are very

interesting at the same time I'm

checking we have also some friends from

Nigeria a beam below haya beam below so

we were just a Nigeria recently and

teaching at the Faculty of Law and Lagos

you know at alejos University and a beam

very successful guy very successful when

this glorious time he was the one who

brought us and Venga and made this

fantastic time today we know about

Arsenal yeah so but you might not hear

the name guarantee Darren Dean is

actually the son of David day so Darren

Dean is the agent of Tyrion Rhee and

Fabregas for example

- big agents so how did he ended up

becoming an agent it helps if the father

is a president of a football club so

that's Darren Dean he's actually lower

as well but he's acting as an agent

second one Jason Ferguson the name

Ferguson

yes sir Alex Ferguson his son is also an

agent right it helps if the father is a

coach for a long time in a club if the

son grows up become an agent it opened

doors right again having a family member

in the business opens the door to become

an agent number three for an actual

coach which is now a coach you might

hurt Neil Warnock coach of Cardiff his

son James Warnock is also an agent and

working in the business right again the

father is a coach the son is an agent we

have more of that where the father's a

coach the son is an agent we have Sam

Allardyce and his son Craig Ella dice is

an agent right began the relationship

for the son we have it one more time you

know david moyes his son david moyes jr.

an agent for Wasserman he is also

natured right the father is a coach

the son is an agent we have also other

relationships like not just where the

father where the brother is a football

player and the other brothers are the

agents is also very interesting you

might heard Rainey Ramos of course the

brother of Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid

his brother Rainey is his agent very

successful agent by the way in Spain is

not just representing a Sergio Ramos his

brother he used it also in the field for

the he used that Network to represent

today a lot of players from Real Madrid

and other clubs in Spain and all over

the world so very successful agent

there's Rainey Ramos another one you

might hurt the name

Welbeck former Arsenal player yeah well

Beck's brothers Chris and Wayne are also

agents and they're representing their

brother yeah so they're the agents of

their brother together two brothers

representing their own brother again a

great relationship if you have it you

can do it you might heard about the

father of Messi or the father of namur

they are the agents because their sons

are top football players they're

representing their sons in the business

but also in Germany we have it a lot

like the father of Yulia Brandt his

Jurgen Brandt is the agent or the

Hummels his father is an agent and and

so on but they're also the cases where a

good friend from a childhood friend

becomes the ageing of the football

player you might hurt nothing Torre in

Germany from Cologne he's the agent of

his best friend Lukas Podolski so again

they even went together for kindergarten

so there were friends from the

kindergarten time and one and one the

friend became a football player the

other friend slowly become the agent and

a very successful agents in and outside

of Germany represent our players not

just in Germany also in Turkey in

England and one of the trustful good

guys in the business nothing to worry if

you know her his name another

interesting case I want to show you very

very interesting this one maybe you

heard the name Honus yeah

Wooley hoon is the former Byam president

his brother dieter hoeneß

is a football agent right the one

brother former president the other

brother in agent it goes on in Munich

it's very common like this not just in

politics but so in football where family

members are involved into business the

second one is Michele Romanow yeah yeah

he's the brother of karl-heinz

Rummenigge 'ah the actual president of

my mini is an agent not just a brother

is an agent also his son Roman Roman

Egan is also an agent and represents

football players very interesting how

many brothers and sons are agents there

in in one o'clock and then you have also

a former by a meaning employee which is

Matthias Sammer now with Borussia

Dortmund his son Marvin summer is also a

football agent I think I gave you so

many examples so what I'm trying to do

is I try to explain the agent of these

people are they had it easier than the

self-made agents yeah because they had

already they linked into the football

they have someone a family member a good

friend

which is in the business but that

doesn't mean all of them just remain

with one client the smarter ones use

that network to represent other clients

and to build up on top of it yeah that's

that's group to family member and

of football that means someone worked in

football and then using that network in

football become a football agent number

one example you know the former football

player and by a medic sporting director

Christian Mellinger again Christian

Ellingham

is today an agent but before he was a

player but then became a sporting

director he used that Network then

become finally a football agent today he

is acting for all football players in

Germany he was the agent of Jerome

Boateng I think not anymore but he still

represents big players like Jonathan tar

and a lot of others in Germany so again

he using your position in football as a

sporting director or as a scout and then

breaking through it becoming a football

agent yeah now I will come to a very

interesting case sorry for that some

vitamins so now coming to a very

interesting case I want you to listen

carefully to that using the football

business to come visit we are still in

group 3 have you heard about the adidas

trio I say again the added

three oh yeah so very interesting story

three friends all three working for

Adidas former adidas employees in

Germany Daniel de lunga Tosun bit and

Hannes Venza today their company of the

adidas trio is called beloved very

successful agency in Germany

representing top players like sejin

Aubrey Chi Harvard's a really good

agency good agents educated people but

the way I'm showing you how did they got

into the business is very interesting so

they use their network within the brand

side of football which is adidas yeah it

could be friends from Nike could be

someone from Puma breaking into the

agents business because they have this

network they know the players they know

the players they know the agents of the

players name they know the football

club's they are already in the business

just on another side they use their

network to break through into the agency

so very interesting so for you to think

about it becoming an agent doesn't mean

you need to start directly as an agent

you can come from another area of

football or from another profession yeah

so this is this example about the adidas

tree is very interesting there they when

they started I think early 2012 13

something their first client

interestingly is permit a second he's

like me from Hannover that's that's why

I know the case and permit Osaka was

their first coin still their client and

that's how they started

so starting an agency three friends

coming together getting the one player

they were representing at adidas anyways

becoming the agent he will help them

opening doors one thing will bring the

started I need to show you something for

a German version of that and probably 50

sorta so he was coming to London every

him he was really like working on it he

expecting someone who was writing books

working as a sports journalist someone

who was even making documentaries about

agents have seen the agents word so much

I think that here that he decided in the

end he must have got a good offer by the

way to say I am working now as an agent

and he started and he's now an agent for

sports to Tom so yeah very interesting

story as well yeah so a journalist but

they're also former football players who

today working as an agent or worked as

an agent before you all know parole from

Barcelona when he retired he became a

football agent but today not anymore the

latest is I think he stopped being an

agent two years ago but in the beginning

he was but a very famous figure who is

very successful actually agent today is

a co yeah the Portuguese player he has

an agency in Portugal and works as a

football agent and very successful

represent a lot of players so again

someone in football

the former football player using that

network to become a football agent today

yeah so very interesting so this is

group three guys so other areas from

football you can become a scout work in

a football club you can be working in a

marketing department in a football club

you can work for football brands like

Adidas Puma Nike or any other sports

related brands and or you can work in a

football federation or UEFA FIFA

whatever but this you have to use your

network you need to build your network

while you're there from there you can

break through and become an agent if

that's what you want to do I'm just

showing you how many different ways are

existing to do it yeah there's not just

one way there are millions of ways to

get into it so let's go to number four

coming from other professions I talked

already nearly half an hour

well people told me I should talk to you

talk slowly because I'm talking too fast

and I think I talk too slow now and it's

half an hour but I'll move on so let's

say let's go quickly to see it yeah it's

growing I'm just checking like other

friends joining you know be able so

friends from Jordan Sami joined we're

on number four coming from other

professions agents Green yeah number

four lawyers accountants business people

rich parents for example they're people

like that doctors even doctors bankers

teachers nearly endless but these are

these are very common especially lawyers

accountants they know the finance of the

players no he has no the contract it's a

very big advantage business people very

business minded yeah so they use their

expertise expertise whatever they have

in their field if it is a lawyer and

he's good in contracts he used that to

come into the business and use it and

there and represent and lawyers like me

I'm a lawyer as well we are

representative of

wines Indian we know how to do contracts

it's a big advantage if you are a lawyer

of course you have a bigger advantage to

represent players but that doesn't mean

no lawyers won't make it no there's

nothing like that yeah you can always

work with a good lawyer together which

you should even I when I go into another

country I work with another lawyer

together because I don't know the local

law and the local contract law yeah so

to protect myself and my client I will

always work with another lawyer very

important guys let's move on so I told

you there are different ways coming from

other professions I've seen doctors

today agents I've seen bankers there

today ages any yeah it's endless

literally let's go to the final part

breakaway agents breakaway agents are

interesting agents guys I like them I

like them in that way like how we call

them breakaway agent that doesn't mean I

always like the agents or whatever

don't mix it up so breakaway agents

there are two examples because we are

here in England in London I'll give you

two examples

number one is ad ward

you might heard his name so he was

working for impact for Rob Segal an

agent in England right later on he

started his own agency so he's

representing today Sterling and

Chamberlain oxlade-chamberlain sterling

big names in football so he learned from

intz in in another agency used that

expertise to create his own agency yeah

breakaway agent another very very big

figure or well-known figure I would say

the people knows today in England is a

mecca a mecca is an agent who was

working for base soccer in England so he

was working for base during that sign I

mean he world years in useful base I

don't know many is 7-8 years I think if

I'm wrong someone should correct me but

after that he created his own agency and

he represents today players like Sancho

it will be resealed son and so on so

again he learned somewhere and now is

doing his own is his own thing and very

successful both these agents are

successful in what they do I mean they

have good players I can't say much about

their day-to-day business

but they have top layers which they

represent especially Emeka and yeah

these are the group 5 breakaway agents I

wanted to briefly mention so now we have

all the groups everything is done Group

1 2 3 4 5 I'll go to the next page we

finish this part so you have an overview

about the agents so now we are going

into you

the last part not the last but I will

talk as well about something else about

my journey briefly I want to talk not

that much but I want to show you how did

I start it yeah if you see if you look

into it for me you will see a lot with

universities yeah so my passion is

education that's my number one passion

in life I always wanted to be a teacher

so my parents wanted me become a lawyer

a doctor so in the end I ended up

becoming a lecturer at university I was

a lawyer and the lecturer so it was a

win-win for both sides so but I studied

in different universities in Germany in

England in Turkey and still I that my

doctor in law in sports law but for me

it was early clear as a student and you

should start as soon as possible I

wanted to do something that sports I

wanted to teach in sports and I wanted

to work in sports it was clear in my

mind

I could see it and I said I need to

start as soon as I can so education like

is the key to success 100% I have you

can see there

whatever you do guys whatever you add on

to yourself from an education

perspective will remain with you your

whole life again whatever you do

regarding education it will remain with

you your whole life you can win money

you can lose money yeah you can win

friends lose friends and love things but

whatever you do and educate yourself

it's a lot it's a it's a lifelong

investment so invest into yourself is so

important it could be a language it

could be masters it could be doctor it

could be a bachelor it could be any

anything really regarded to what makes

you better yeah there is no ending and

when you finish something go to the next

even learning a new language and if you

finish finished graduated from

everything from university doesn't mean

your education ends then you stop you

you lose never stop educating yourself

so as I said I want to - we are now in

the green column I wanted to enter into

the football world and I and I was sick

and I were thinking where can I go so I

applied for internships for places in

the beginning no one really wanted me it

was always rejection I was a law student

in third year and and I realized very

soon and allowed from my parents's add

value to others if you want something

from others again add value to others if

you want something from others so very

important in life you should add value

to people before you're asking for

something so I've seen so many people

sending their best series everywhere and

apply for a job for an internship you

will 99 percent gain reject it you need

to add on your CV something and I'm

telling you something which will make

that place better which will make that

agent better which will make that lawyer

you want to work for better add value to

someone so they can see you're valuable

for them and then you can learn from

them so very important and my idea at

that time was I will create a magazine

for that agency that was my entry I was

teaching them I was teaching them about

contract law in different countries I

was choosing always five topics every

month one magazine and I was making that

agency knowledgeable more and better and

that was my entry when they see that I

can help them to come back better so

that's when I started learning in an

agency what happened afterwards learning

and then people said yeah how did you

end up meeting Mesut özil in the end so

how did you become his agent yeah I was

working in few other agencies you can

call me breakaway agent not really I

didn't take any players from there so I

was went back to university I was

studying in a different country and I

was teaching agents I started very early

and sold a niche no one is really

teaching agents no one is giving them

knowledge and I said that's the key area

that's in need

area I have to invest my time in my

effort while I was teaching so many

family members contacted me and asked

for help like the family members of

Methodism so I helped them first in

contracts one help two times help

brought me to become the lawyer another

into it if you want to work into it this

business needs good agents needs

well-educated good characters who can

help these players and there's no better

feeling if you have a young player you

represent them together with you team

and then he signs a professional

contract or if it's not there is nothing

better if I have my young agents around

me and I teach them and make them better

agents so there's a way but you need to

learn and accept you will have failures

in life so to come there where you're

and still if you're there where you

think you want to be you have to set new

goals you have to set yourself new

dreams

scouts from other football clubs which

you might later use as an agent very

very important if you're working

as a scout let's say for Arsenal that

means you will meet Scouts and sporting

directors from any other clock not just

in England all over the world so you're

creating a network and after two or

three years being a scout you can move

out and become your agent so very very

interesting next move on scout working

in a football club but that doesn't need

to be just a scout could be any position

in a football club but scout is very

good to start with you can also have a

will help you to find a place for an

internship that they will kind of help

you to get into places where you will

work in football and this could be your

entry into it and I mean even if it

doesn't happen through that the

education you do for yourself is worth

it but it's not just the FBA Sheffield

Hallam University does a great job in

football yeah definitely I can recommend

these guys there are different programs

also for online you can go into a search

for it

I mean Berk back in London is it's a

good place to do a masters a lot of my

guys who works with me they do the

masters over there is a good place a

good good people Sean Hamill over there

is a good contact person and also the

IFPI guys in Brussels yeah they do also

great job so if you want to go to

Brussels and study over there so there

are different programs you should go and

check what's the best for you if you're

interested in educating yourself and at

the same time have an entry into the

football world yeah just like an idea

this is about the ways you can get into

the profession but you have to try it

you have to fail and try again and try
