A volcano in Iceland’s southwest has begun erupting after weeks of intense earthquake activity.

Authorities have evacuated the nearly 4,000 residents of the fishing town of Grindavik.

The well-known Blue Lagoon spa has also been shut down.

The eruption reportedly began around 22.17 GMT after a series of small earthquakes around 21.00 according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Images and livestreams by local news outlet RUV are showing the lava pour out from fissures in the ground.
