Associate Professor Daniel James is the director of SABEL Labs, an intrapreneurial enterprise of Griffith University.
For the athlete of yesteryear, this meant hours of testing in an artificial laboratory environment.
Today, athletes can use wearable technologies to measure their performance on the playing field under the real pressure of competition.
Micro sensors measure the movement hundreds of times a second at one of more parts of the body, giving a complete picture of how an athlete moves.
During a football game, for example, we can collect detailed information about each individual player, including the distance they cover, how fast they run, and where they are on the field at any point of the game.
In fact, we can collect information on the thousands of actions they take during a game, which can be analysed to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.
But it’s not just elite athletes that can benefit. As these devices get smaller, cheaper and more common, they can help us ‘regular’ people as well, whether we just want to stay healthy or we’re serious weekend
