Physics plays important role in Sports

In Sports like cricket, tennis, and Football

physics has important role to play.

In 1997 in a match between

France & Brazil, Roberto Carlos scored

an unexpected Goal 🎉🎉

which bent in its flight to its left

& Surprised 😮 the opponents.

Let us see the Physics behind

bending of the ball in its flight

As you can see 👀 here, the ball

turns sharply during its flight

While the ball is travelling in air

what (??) caused the ball to change its path.

i.e. deviate from the straight line

path, which the ball is expected (to take)

When a ball is moved

in air without rotation

then it moves along straight line,

but when rotation is to the ball

the ball

bends to one side

i.e. its trajectory

does not remain straight line

as the ball moves forward

the ball pushes the air sideways

and leaves empty space behind it

So, the air from

high pressure zone in front of the ball

moves backward to occupy

the empty space which is left behind

See, the air molecules travel backwards

and the ball moves forward

whereas the air molecules move backward

And PRESSURE on the two sides of

the ball, hence is same because

VELOCITY is same

Now, when the ball is given slight spin

(lets) say in anti clockwise direction, the air

moves backward like the previous

case

But, due to rotation of the ball

The air is dragged along the

rotation of the ball, i.e.

the rough surface drags the air

along the surface

This causes speed difference

on the two sides.

To the one side of the ball the speed of air

becomes high, whereas

the net speed of the air on the other side becomes LOW

Now from "Bernoulli's Theorem" we know that

p + rho gh

+

1/2

Rho v^2 is

constant

Now the height is same

on the two sides

But, the velocity to one side

is low

hence the Pressure at that side

will be high

Whereas, on the other side

where Velocity is high

the Pressure will be low, &

this pressure difference will cause

a Force

on the ball

from

High Pressure side to

low pressure side, and this is why

when anti-clockwise spin is give

the force acts

to Left of the ball and the path

Bends 🍌

Thank You
