it's safe to say that in the world of
horror movies sequels are rarely a good
thing for some reason the horror genre
lends itself to Long convoluted film
series with lots of retcons needless
plot twists and the ruining of once
beloved characters these tropes may make
horror sequels a tough watch and in the
worst cases can retroactively ruin the
original however as seen in the
following 10 films sometimes a horror
sequel can be just as good as if not
better than the film that came before
whether they carried on a good idea or
took the franchise in a completely new
Direction these 10 horror sequels which
aren't always the second film just to
let you know all stand up as an
excellent movie in their own right and
somehow manage to avoid the dreaded
sequel curse I'm to live from what
culture horror and these are 10 horror
movie sequels that are practically
Flawless number 10. Annabelle creation
not only is 2017's Annabelle creation a
sequel but it's also a spin-off what a
deal the fourth film in The Conjuring
franchise and the direct follow-on from
2014's Annabelle this movie tells the
story of the the eponymous doll and how
it came to be possessed by a demon so
it's a prequel too this deal just keeps
getting better and better creation
depicts how the demon inside Annabelle
was First Unleashed under the world how
it terrorized a group of Orphans and how
it eventually took the form of a young
girl who would murder her adoptive
parents leading directly into the events
of Annabelle the first Annabelle movie
was a big smash at the box office taking
over 257 million dollars not only did
its sequel take almost 50 million
dollars more but it was also heralded by
critics for being far more similar in
tone to the original Conjuring films
Annabelle creation takes all of the
elements of a classic supernatural
horror and plays them out perfectly it's
a gripping watch with some really
gruesome kills and above all else a
return to form for one of modern
Horror's biggest franchises number 9.
Final Destination 5. by the time the
fifth Final Destination film rolled
around audiences had grown sick of the
franchise's formula someone has a
premonition cheats death then they and
their pals are hunted down by the reaper
until the they too are claimed but this
installment in the franchise which was
released in 2011 did a lot to
re-establish the series as one of
Horror's juggernauts for a start it
brought back Mr Bloodworth from the
first two films an ominous presence that
gave Final Destination 5 some much
needed chills secondly out with a campy
over-the-top deaths of the old Final
Destination instead replaced with some
truly grisly ends including someone's
face being split open by a wrench the
film also makes good use of the 3D craze
that we sweeping Cinema in the early
2010s something that it was rightly
praised for and finally the ending
nicely ties it back to the very first
Final Destination picture without
spoiling anything this is done to
perfection and is a neat little reward
for those who have followed the films
since they started number eight where's
Craven's New Nightmare the iconic 1984
slasher flick A Nightmare on Elm Street
was written and directed by horror
Visionary and passionate bird watcher
where's Craven however by the time 1994
had rolled around Craven hadn't been
involved in the series for over five
years so he decided that it was time for
Freddie's Daddy to make a return
disappointed by the franchise becoming
more cartoonish in comical since his
departure the director created Wes
Craven's New Nightmare a picture far
more akin to his original views for the
series New Nightmare gets seriously meta
with Heather langenkamp the main actress
from the original Elm Street movie
playing a fictional version of herself
who is haunted by Freddy Krueger in the
real world langenkamp isn't the only
actor to portray a version of herself in
the film as both John Saxon and Robert
Englund also make appearances even Wes
himself turns up in the picture if that
doesn't hurt your head then nothing will
critics praise this movie for its
blurring between reality and the
fictional world of the existing
nightmare films as well as being a
welcome return to the terror scene in
the original number 7. sawtu the saw
films aren't everybody's cup of tea in
fact a cup of tea would not be advised
during the watching of these films as
you'll most likely throw it back up
again immediately however it is
impossible to deny their popularity the
nine Saw movies have made over a billion
dollars worldwide at the box office and
one of the most profitable films in the
franchise is its first sequel actioned
almost immediately after the first
picture's success or two is once again
all about the jigsaw killer and his
depraved set of games highlights this
time include a key buried in a pile of
syringes a box filled with hidden blades
a nerve agent that will kill everyone
unless they solve all the puzzles within
two hours wholesome fun for the whole
family the scale of the sadism is
definitely upped from the first saw as
the sequel features way more victims
than the previous movie audiences also
have an insight into jigsaw's mind now
which somehow makes him seem even more
deranged than before again it's not for
everyone but if you're partial to a
psychotic Gore Fest every once in a
while then you can't do much better than
sore 2. number 6. 28 Weeks Later Danny
Boyle's 28 Days Later broke new ground
when it was released in 2002 and helped
reinvigorate the zombie horror genre
although if you ask Boyle it's not a
zombie film Spanish filmmaker Juan
Carlos fresnadillo took on the
unenviable task of making a sequel to
the movie in 2007. 28 Weeks Later picks
up where the first film left off as the
inhabitants of one of the safe zones
struggled to contain an outbreak of the
rage virus with none of the original
Stars returning for this film it was
facing an uphill battle from the start
but it absolutely smashed it creating a
worthy successor to Boyle's original the
excitement and action of the first movie
are matched by the sequel which is just
as character-driven and emotional as
what came before it the fast-moving
zombies or not zombies whatever are just
as scary the second time around and the
vision of a post-apocalyptic London is
just as chilling although depending on
where in London you live you might not
notice the difference number five
Halloween 2018. understanding the
continuity of the Halloween franchise is
about as easy as understanding Michael
Meyer's facial expressions after the two
rob zombie-led efforts of the late 2000s
the series laid dormant for nine years
before it was picked up by director
David Gordon Green in order to take the
franchise which had been dwindling in
popularity and quality for some time
back to its roots green and his team
brought back original Halloween director
and all-round horror Legend John
Carpenter as an advisor he even did the
score for the film The First Time
Carpenter had supplied music to the
franchise since Halloween 3 in 1982. not
only did it bring back Jamie Lee Curtis
as Laurie Strode for the first time
since 2002 but it also brings back the
tension and excellent kills that fans of
the series had missed for so long
Curtis's performance greens directing
and a quintessential Carpenter score all
combined to make this film an entry into
the series worth celebrating if only
they hadn't named it the same thing as
the original that would have made things
a lot less confusing number 4. Bride of
Frankenstein we're going all the way
back to 1935 for this next sequel and
even further back to 1931 for the film
that spawned it James Wales classic
Frankenstein may not be scary by today's
standards but there is no denying the
impact it's had on the genre and on pop
culture as a whole many of the visual
conventions we associate with Mary
Shelley's Creations stemmed from this
movie and it was selected by
preservation by the U.S Library of
Congress in 1991. Wale made a follow-up
to Frankenstein four years later this
time focusing on Dr Henry Frankenstein's
quest to make a female mate for his
original creature this follow-up has
been praised for everything from its set
design to its sound recording to the
performance of its actors principally
Boris Karloff as the monster and Ella
Lancaster in the titular role much like
the original Bride of Frankenstein was
also preserved by the Library of
Congress in 1998 a rare feat for a
horror film and its sequel the original
Frankenstein was a tough act to follow
but James Whalen all those involved
surpassed all expectations and proved
that lightning could strike twice if
you'll pardon the pun number three Evil
Dead 2 Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell make
movie Magic look easy whenever the two
of them work together this sequel to Sam
raimi's original horror film The Evil
Dead sees Campbell's Ash Williams once
again at the mercy of the Book of the
Dead instead of his friends from the
first film ashes the this time joined by
Annie nobe the daughter of the
archaeologist responsible for digging up
the book in the first place whilst the
first movie was a huge success and an
instant classic many fans critics and
Publications have called Evil Dead 2 the
better of the two pictures its special
effects are more advanced the gore is
turned up to 11 and Campbell's betrayal
of Ash is even better than it was before
it helped establish him as a horror icon
and raymie as a director to keep an eye
on the shame he never went on to do
anything bigger really isn't it Army of
Darkness saw Ash doing his thing way
back in yield in medieval times in the
TV show Ash vs Evil Dead picked up his
story again but it's Evil Dead 2 that is
the firm fan favorite among Evil Dead
fans number 2. screen 2 the first scream
film also directed by Wes Craven was
revolutionary for the first time horror
movie characters were aware of the
conventions of horror movies and used
them to their advantage did it keep most
of them alive well no but at least they
tried so how do you create a sequel to a
film that's all about subverting
conventions why you subvert people's
expectations on sequels of course screen
two released just one year after the
original in 1997 is about a copycat
killer obsessed with the murderer from
the first movie it features a lot of the
returning cast members as well as big
names like Sarah Michelle Geller and
Jade Pinkett joining the action it's not
just as clever and meta as the first
scream film but crucially Scream 2 still
works as an out and out horror it's got
a compelling villain a strong lead
Survivor in Neve Campbell Sydney
Prescott and more dead bodies than you
can shake a ghost face mask at number
one Dawn of the Dead just to clarify we
are not talking about the 2004 remake of
Dawn of the Dead by Zack Snyder that
film is good but it isn't actually a
sequel also how can anything hold a
candle to the Brilliance that is George
a Romero's 1978 original Romero waited a
decade to make a successor to his
original zombie flake Night of the
Living Dead which is good but nowhere
near as good as this follow-up Dawn of
the Dead follows survivors of a zombie
outbreak as they hole up in a shopping
mall asides from being gory zombie
bashing fun Dawn of the Dead is also a
comment on consumer-driven society as
the survivors gradually succumb to a
hedonistic lifestyle brought on by the
mall's luxuries the movie was not a box
office smash at the time and many
critics decried its overly bloody nature
as nothing more than superficial however
in the years that have followed it has
grown a huge fan base despite a rocky
start Dawn of the Dead has now
established itself as one of the titans
of zombie horror as well as one of the
most beloved cult movies to ever grace
the screen and that's our list what
horror movie sequel is perfect to you
