Sport Education Model Pedagogical Approach Tutorial - Year 10 HPE Unit

hello and welcome to a new year of hpe

to start the year we are going to

undertake a season of basketball under

the sports education model

so this tutorial is going to run through

how the sports education model works

the sports education model uses

student-centered

instruction so that means you the

students are in charge of

what happens over the next eight weeks

for this basketball season

as a part of our basketball season this

term we're going to have games

practices and warm-ups with um

the games are going to be set up

refereed and scored by you

the season and finals roster are going

to be designed by you

team names uniforms and logos as well

which role goes to which students will

also be decided by you

within your teams and during the unit

you're going to be assessed on your

collaboration

the leadership you display within your

role and your responsibility

the aim is to have a lot of fun promote

participation through different roles

and foster a community spirit in our

lessons this

should replicate the community spirit

that

you feel in a community sports club

which hopefully some of you have been a

part of a welcoming community sports

club

that makes participating in sports so

much more fun

and makes it more than just about

participating playing the game itself

to start with we are going to nominate

three coaches as we will have three

teams of eight for our season

the coaches you nominate should have

some idea about the game preferably have

played for a few years before

or possibly have even coached before for

the coaching we're going to take a game

sets approach which means

we will be playing small games like

three by three

piggy in the middle keeping off end zone

and things like that for example but

it'll be up to the coaches

to decide which of these drills they use

each week

the main aim of coaching is to encourage

participation for everyone and ensure

that we are

practicing skills in a real game context

rather than

boring repetition of skill drills

which um don't use any tactical

awareness at all

that might sound a bit intense to those

who have never played basketball before

but it's been showing that this approach

is better to develop skills in beginner

players and besides it's more fun

other than the coach each team will have

two referees which will need to be

people who understand the game and have

played the game before

two statistic and score keepers which

will

devise a score sheet and an individual

stats sheet keep scores

post and post the scores and stats to

the class wiki

uh a stadium manager who will be in

charge of set up pack up

and organizing the team members if

someone's away for

any reason organizing someone to fill in

for that position

and things like that um and two design

and media managers which will be in

charge of

logo design media releases after each

game

um a school newsletter piece at the end

of the season leading up to the finals

and things like um support banners and

things like that so there are roles

within the team for people who enjoy

visual and

design physical assessment

as well as numbers based assessment and

organization

so hopefully within your teens you can

choose something that appeals to you and

we can all participate meaningfully in

the unit

the three coaches will be picking their

teams in mind so

coaches need to keep in mind that

you will need to pick people who can

fulfill each role

and you're able to self-nominate for the

role that you want including the coach

each week after the session season games

we will have about 30 minutes

of homework set to fulfill your role

it's your responsibility to ensure your

role is completed by the next hpe lesson

so that we can get out and play the

games otherwise if this doesn't happen

games may have to be sacrificed to make

sure that we're fulfilling our roles

just like in the real world it's not

always going to work out things won't

always go to plan

but we will practice conflict resolution

and if you're proactive

we can work together as co-teachers

under your student life instruction

and you can get assistance from other

people within your team or

other people in the same role from the

other teams and together

we i'm confident we will have a

successful and fun season of basketball
