hi i'm james wilkinson and i've been a
travel editor for over 20 years
on this show we're going to take you to
some of the world's most amazing
destinations from the big cities to the
great regional areas we'll go inside
some of the world's best hotels bars
restaurants galleries and much more
right now we're in adelaide south
australia and this is wayfarer
[Music]
hi james welcome to crown falls adelaide
thanks so much i look forward to showing
you around looks like a great day
crowne plaza adelaide is one of the top
new hotels here in the city and it's
really popular with both business and
leisure travellers to tell me more about
it i'm here with the general manager
sarah goldfich and sarah what a great
hotel you've just opened yeah thanks
james i'm so excited to show you around
the new crown plaza here we're standing
here in our level 10 plaza workspace
which is really the um the heart of the
hotel not many hotels in australia have
a sky lobby to welcome you in and you
have one here in adelaide what an
exciting addition to any hotel well it's
it's wonderful when you arrive you know
up in the elevator into our reception
where we've got a dedicated check-in
space here and then through to the plaza
workspace where is designed for our
modern business traveler to work you
know pump through the emails while
you've got a glass in hand if you wish
now when it comes to up here in terms of
food and beverage that's one thing in
the hotel but i think you've got some of
the best rooms in the city upstairs oh
absolutely we've got beautiful 329 rooms
here from the our third floor up to
level 20 which have the floor-to-ceiling
glass that overlook the hills now that
is something very fun about it this
hotel is a crowne plaza like it was
being built as a new crown plaza it's
looking a bit more fun with the design
the design of the rooms is great yeah
thank you very much design led our rooms
for you know the modern business
traveler in mind to so that they can
work in that serenity and comfort
upstairs your own little sanctuary but
then if you want to engage come down
here the plaza workspace there's lots of
light though too i like that about those
rooms where you know you can see the
adelaide oval on some of them you can
see hills and the other ones just a nice
outlook it's a beautiful outlook
somebody said to me the other day just
waking up there in the serenity of that
beautiful in the clouds you know felt
like they were you know
escaped from the town
[Music]
a lot of us don't want to work in our
room so it kind of solves the solution
of being in a very spacious area having
lots of light coming in from these
windows overlooking the adelaide hills
yeah exactly we've really created that
business hub here in the plaza workspace
where you can collaborate with others
pump through your emails but also you
know um have the services that we
provide here at crown plaza
everything here in the plaza workspace
has really been designed for the modern
business traveler so that our chairs are
powered so you can charge your iphone or
your laptop while you work through the
day and then in the evening put the
laptop away and you know power through
the cocktails
you've also got some of the most stylish
staff anywhere in adelaide i think so
absolutely and they're dressed
immaculately in their beautiful darling
uniforms we spent a lot of time with
paul the designer laboring over all the
different aspects of the uniform isn't
it funny so many hotels can actually
have such a great style but then the
uniforms can let it down so you have a
bit more fun with it here at the crown
plaza i think so we've enabled our staff
to wear with something that's really
smart and casual but also enables them
to enhance you know what they need to do
and very important with the guest
experience isn't that the touch point of
grabbing your bags and coming through
off the driveway and then up through the
lobby it's a huge difference it makes a
huge difference they're easily
recognisable but they always look smart
now here you've got some great food and
beverage on offer as well in the
restaurant on the same floor here yeah i
can't wait to introduce you to chef pat
who's our executive chef in kumo
restaurant he's done an amazing you know
job of our modern japanese fusion
restaurant awesome well thank you so
much for your time thank you
[Music]
hi chef hi james welcome to cool thank
you so much mate if you could show me
some of the food that'd be amazing
[Music]
chef thanks for your time we're here at
crown plaza adelaide at kumo restaurant
one of the hottest new restaurants in
adelaide tell me about the food
philosophy here
so the food philosophy is based on
modern asian leaning towards japanese
korean and chinese influence and style
of food
food that people would like to eat i'd
like to eat and i'd like to share that
with um
with my guest
and you're sourcing produce from around
adelaide as well we've got the hills 20
minutes away so it's pretty close by
yeah we do get we do a lot of um we do
get a lot of produce from um
the hills
say cheese is one of our
uh cheese product producers and we get a
lot of chick our chicken comes from
barossa valley port lincoln our skinfish
come from portland india so a lot a lot
of local producers i i use so you can
have so much fun with the produce from
within 30 k's of the hotel that's got to
be a bit of fun for you here yes it is
it is you know it's at your fingertips
right at your doorsteps you know when
you when you need it it's fresh it's
available it's just a phone call away so
it's great yeah we're in a city where
it's known for for the wine as much as
the food what's more pressure is that
the wines on the list matching your food
or is your food matching some of the
amazing wines like the rockford basket
presents on the list i like to say it
both ties in together they both they
both hold a value to within the menu and
on the table so i'd like to say the food
component is is quite important um on
the menu as the wine yeah
and it's very much a foodie part of
adelaide we're in right now you've got
restaurants like africola literally a
block away so a lot of amazing
restaurants in this small area and
you've kind of you've come in with your
product and how do you think how do you
think you're going so far look it's it
was a challenge in the beginning um you
know we found our
foot and we're
going really well right now you know um
the guys are
used to what we're doing we've found our
we've found our steps in the kitchen and
getting used to how we do things and the
team has come together really well and
we've gelled and
did some good stuff yes and it's funny
how far restaurants and hotels have come
like this is not really what a classic
hotel restaurant is this is a pretty
exciting space to be in isn't it yes it
is it is it's i think one of the few
aeg hotels that have this type of
russian a specialty restaurant a
destination restaurant so one of not so
many in the his hd group now what are
some of your favorite things on the menu
that you're playing with at the moment
right now i like our special our market
fish is what we have every week and i
like the um the lobster roll that's new
on the menu so you know that's been
going really well and our old classic
favorite is the chicken sandal and that
sells like like you know one of the best
sellers
well i'm standing hungry now i'm going
to try some of the food if you don't
mind yes let's just do that
[Music]
hello james welcome to hotel indiegogo
marcus let me take you on a tour
well thomas we're here at the hotel
indigo adelaide markets and what an
exciting addition to the city of this
beautiful hotel
it is the first hotel indigo in
australia and we're very excited to be
here the concept around hotel indigo is
all around the neighborhood story and
the interior designers the architects
and obviously our brand has really
brought that to life
and a lot of design cues from around the
corner the adelaide markets are
literally just around the corner and the
beautiful touches in here that pay
homage to the adelaide markets that's
exactly right so the facade that you see
in the background is actually a replica
of the federal hall building facade of
the central market behind that you see a
mural that
is reflective of the various murals
throughout adelaide
and the market theme we're bringing
through our food we
source our food from the markets 80 of
our food is from south australia so
that's a really key highlight
so much fun you have a lot of fun in the
hotel don't you you've got a fun design
cues you've got staff in amazing
uniforms you've got local produce it's
you're having a lot of fun with this
beautiful hotel it is it is exciting
because we're part of
the ihc hotels and resorts brand but
this particular brand of boutique brand
which sits in the luxury lifestyle
segment is really one that we
can explore
and do things differently tell me about
the the local gins and wines in the bar
they're all from down the street
literally aren't they so one key
philosophy is to work with locals and
local producers so from a beverage point
of view besides the famous mclaren and
barossa vines
we're surrounded by distilleries we've
got beautiful distilleries in our
neighborhood for example prohibition gin
so we feature all these for our guests
to try and we are collaborating with
kangaroo island spirits to also infuse
our own gin label so look you've got the
best job in hotels in australia having
all these amazing fun touch points i
believe so
when it comes to things like the
uniforms like small details of having
the staff wear fun outfits so again it's
all around bringing the neighborhood
story to life in the hotel and
having the market just 200 meters down
the road when we looked at uniforms we
wanted them to be reflective of the
informality of the markets we've got
checkered shirts um it looks a bit more
casual and
yeah guests gets uh guests are meant to
feel
the proximity to the markets and what it
has to offer now this has been coming
for a couple of years but it's a very
playful theme did the hotel come out how
you thought it would from the artist
impressions that you saw a few years ago
the artist's impressions don't do it
justice so seeing it in life-size is
absolutely phenomenal you know we've got
the pink colors which are referenced to
don dunstan's pink shores the previous
south australian premiere
and the way
we as a team have brought in the
adelaide way of life together in
collaboration with our producers is just
phenomenal it's fun how adelaide is
becoming a bit more known for rooftop
bars and outdoors because the weather's
so great here around for year around the
year so
tell us about your rooftop though this
is one of my favorite parts about the
hotel so marymaker
is a combined wine and cocktail bar
we can see it up to 100 guests that
overall has a capacity about 130 and it
offers beautiful views across to the
adelaide hills to the cbd we've got the
most stunning sunsets up there and it's
just a great place to either entertain
visitors from interstate or have a great
friday night awesome well thanks so much
for having us thank you
[Music]
across the street from the indigo hotel
is the central market and it's an
absolute must for anyone visiting
adelaide
with over 70 traders under one roof the
adelaide central market is one of the
largest undercover fresh produce markets
in the southern hemisphere and it's
buzzing with life and color all year
round
the central market offers a huge range
of fresh food including fruit and veg
meat and poultry seafood cheeses bakery
and small goods along with some of
adelaide's most popular cafes and
eateries it's open from tuesday to
saturday and don't forget your cooler
bag
adelaide's also home to some of the
nation's best live events and it's no
surprise south australia carried the tag
of the festival state for several
decades
south australia's world-famous events
and festival showcased the state's
exceptional food and wine sport art and
vibrant city life
one of our favorites is the adelaide
fringe which is the party that truly
defines this great city
it's the largest open access festival in
the southern hemisphere and it's
bursting at the seams with local
interstate and international five-star
acts that transform the state to 31 days
and nights
whether you're a cabaret connoisseur
comedy king or queen theater tragic or
just want to sit back and enjoy the
atmosphere there's something for
everyone at the adelaide fringe
other great year-round events include
while madeleine the crush festival the
cabaret festival tasting australia and
of course the major concerts and awesome
afl footy on offer at the adelaide oval
check out the full list at
