hello and welcome to this week's vlog

now a few vlogs back I discussed the

sport education model and how sports

education can take the valued

contribution to the P curriculum its

ability to focus on the authentic nature

of sport and the way it challenges

traditional notions of winning and

losing defining sport and focuses us

focuses on the broader aspects of sport

different roles the culture and

different aspect ways of promoting

sportsmanship so in this week's vlog I

consider some of the aspects that might

help with the planning of a sport

educational unit now this is important

since one of the initial limitations or

drawbacks or challenges with using sport

education is that initially takes a long

time to plan for and the planning and

understanding of how to structure a unit

can be quite difficult so I hope to do

in this vlog is give some ideas that

might help with the planning of a sport

education unit there could be hope

hopefully uses a framework for future

units as if it was used

now these following points that make aim

to assist in fulfilling the key features

of sport education and these are the key

features that help to promote the

learning outcomes and can be found in

vlog 14 so the first key thing unit

structure and planning now a key aspect

to sport education is the notion of

seasons so preseason a main season and a

postseason where there might be

tournaments or events within that so one

of the key aspects to do at the start of

it planning to do a sports education

unit is to divide the unit into seasons

and begin to plan how much time is

allocated to each season since the Heron

nature is focused on three different

seasons the unit might need to be longer

than the traditional six to eight

lessons that exist in quite a lot of

contexts

once the seasons have been planned the

next key aspect might be to plan the

competition aspect now competition is a

key feature of sport education so when

matches might take place against you and

the time and the duration of matches

need to be planned for this can also

match is can take place in

pre-seasoned such as friendly matches

but also in the main season now these

matches should be planned for so that it

students can access them in a way that

they understand a way they understand

who they're playing and when since these

can be presented to students either on a

notice board or in their portfolios

which I'll discuss later on a final

aspect of unit planning is to plan for

the culminating event the event that

ends the sport education season now this

can be a ceremony much like the Olympics

or that includes for example

certificates and music and just dances

so it brings in such a kind of cultural

aspect of sport so the second aspect

lesson materials and resources now sport

education largely follows a

student-centered approach so we want

students to kind of make their own

decisions about their learning and their

group work so a key aspect for students

to be learning about sport and designing

and creating their own activities and

tasks and deciding on what activities

and tasks to complete in order to

improve their performance one key thing

to do is design appropriate lesson

materials and resources so for example

this could include information sheets

for students about the rules of the game

the chosen sport they're playing in the

unit or how to umpire other aspects

might include task or activity game

sheets that either can be planned for

for specific lessons or that students

can select based on what their teams

need now you might be thinking that this

is quite a lot of resources and it's

quite paper heavy but a recent paper

enjoy bird at the bottom of this vlog

showed to how the technology can be used

to alleviate some of these paper

concerns of but also to enhance students

learning this paper exemplified the use

of YouTube and providing students with

clips to look out on the iPad to select

different activities that they could use

to improve their team's performance and

ready for match play it also use varying

apps to support students with refereeing

and how they can understand the rules

make decisions about what to do and when

so these are some of the examples of the

lessons lesson and material resources so

the final key aspect team portfolios

now team portfolios are a useful way to

organize learning around and embed the

key feature of affiliation affiliation

is how students feel that they identify

with a team and they have a specific

role within a team so team portfolio is

mapped very much like a team binder and

would contain all the information about

the team so within this team folder the

team could identify each person within

their team having a specific profile

page identifying their background their

interests and their their key strengths

and weaknesses for the team can also

identify each person's roles what role

what that means the team could develop

their own identity having their own team

colors their team name their motto their

charm and who their mascot isn't that so

this book portfolio becomes about the

team is owned by the team where they put

different information in there I

mentioned in the previous two points

about unit structure and lesson material

resources in this portfolio students can

be provided with these to put in that so

they can document their learning journey

but they also know when on where they're

going to be planning competitions and

how the unit works in this portfolio we

might also consider the feature of

record-keeping of sports education

students can record their own scores and

perhaps reflect on their team's

performances making reflections

analyzing key strengths and weaknesses

so they can improve their match play and

how they're working together as a group

now I've mentioned three key points unit

structure lesson resources and materials

and the development of team portfolios

with all this in mind that is quite as

still a little bit of planning but one

of the key aspects that you can do is

work with colleagues in your department

work together to plan resources

materials lessons the unit structure

that can be used in several different

classes all classes could be combined

and

big sport education season that involves

three classes could be involved this

allows teachers to learn book teachers

and this allows teachers to learn from

each other but also help each other and

support each other in that process

so I hope you've enjoyed this vlog I

hope it's been useful and I'll return to

some of these key ideas in a few weeks
