i'm sarah gore and this is open house

this week's show is all about arid

escapes homes built not just to

celebrate the sun

but the outdoors we are in paradise

valley arizona to explore a mid-century

inspired home with jaw-dropping views of

the iconic landscape

and we take a special sojourn to a

storybrook estate in the south of france

we visit a sun-drenched ranch-style

compound in the hills above brentwood

and we're in palm springs a city known

for its stunning mid-century modern

architecture

to check out a pair of very different

homes starting with this

polynesian-themed hideaway you are

not going to want to miss this home was

a real passion project

the jubilant celebration of color

pattern

and the palm springs lifestyle

welcome to open house this week we're

all about homes that celebrate the sun

the landscape and being in nature and we

are getting started in beautiful palm

springs for a look at this eye-popping

polynesian-inspired home

with owner tracy turco she celebrated

the mid-century architecture of the home

with color and pattern at every turn

and not to be outdone she also made sure

the outside felt like a resort

the perfect place to bask under that

famous palm springs sky

take a look

[Music]

hi i'm artisan designer tracy turco

and welcome to my favorite place in the

world palm springs california

this house was built in 1961 by esteemed

architect william kreizel

i did my best to preserve and restore

the original architecture

while bringing in my own personal

aesthetic

the result is a jubilant celebration of

color

pattern and the palm springs lifestyle

let's go take a look

[Music]

i want you to feel happiness when you

enter this home

this area was actually covered when we

bought it so i

opened it up to the sun and i created

these architectural beams for a visual

interest

and a sort of lanai effect i painted

them orange as an homage

to all the orange trees in palm springs

and it's become the home

signature color let's go inside

[Music]

this is our hangout room and main

entertaining space

it's bright and airy with these walls of

glass that really bring the outdoors in

here i chose this graphic mod style

wallpaper

that brings in all my favorite colors

and i repeated that wallpaper pattern

on these side tables that i designed i

also love to bring in

organic elements like the repurposed

wood base of the coffee table

the touches of macrame and the

interesting gravel art

i think the color brown really grounds a

space

so i painted the fireplace brown and

used a soft brown area rug

this is a great room to celebrate in but

all celebrations need food

so follow me to the kitchen and dining

area

i wanted this whole area to feel extra

retro

with the orange formica countertops and

the avocado green cabinets

and i can't forget the handmade tiled

backsplash

made by local artisans for the dining

area i use this velveteen wallpaper

that reminds me of a graphic from an old

color tv show

all the bedrooms in this home are

memorable with touches of both the

whimsical

and the surreal and with the master

suite i wanted it to be

filled with contrast i used a lot of

brown in this room

i guess i was inspired by this hip

mid-century bed frame

this duvet cover that i design echoes as

a living room accent wall

and of course brings in my signature

orange

i also love the way the sun shines

through the vertical blinds

it's like something out of a film noir

isn't this paradise i completely

transformed it from a dirt lot

into an oasis it has a pool a fire pit

and a tiki hut perfect for alfresco

dining

i wanted it to feel relaxing like you're

on vacation

every time you step out here of course

my favorite colors are repeated in every

area

and i also didn't forget eye-catching

patterns which you can see in all the

pillows

we spent a lot of time out here how

could you not with this beautiful

weather

this home was a real passion project and

a celebration of

everything i love in design it was a

chance to update a classic

and create something memorable for

everyone i know and love

to enjoy and i hope you enjoyed it too

cheers

[Music]

well tracy really seemed to have fun

designing that home and it seemed to fit

her lifestyle

perfectly which should always be the

goal of a personally designed home

coming up next you are not going to want

to miss the outdoor treats this los

angeles ranch style home has to offer

we'll see you in just a few

welcome back everyone now we're in the

hills overlooking brentwood

at this sophisticated sun-drenched

estate nestled in the mandeville canyon

area

the home itself was designed as an

homage to ranch-style living but it's

the grounds that truly transport you

see for yourself

[Music]

hi i'm alan schwartz here in brentwood

and i want to show you my

beautiful country french estate let me

take you for a look

we've lived here 41 years and it's been

an absolute labor of love for me and my

family

and in short this has been our dream

home

i think the main reason that this home

is so unique

it's only a 3600 square foot home

built on almost two acres of flat land

that in itself throws people off because

you expect to see this gigantic house

but i want the charm

more than size

this is the great room this is a room

that really

everybody spends a lot of time in

nothing in here

is new it's all vintage this hutch was

brought in

two pieces from the uk on a boat as you

can see the rugs are all killing

one of the key features is this built-in

fireplace

surrounded by tiger wood and stone

really added a whole dimension to the

what i call the little living room

[Music]

well we finally got to my favorite room

in the house

which is the kitchen and actually acts

as the front door because

nobody that knows me uses the front door

to enter the house and the kitchen is

where everybody comes in

the skylights were put in here purposely

because i love

lighting and then the indoor out there

where you feel you're still

part of what's going on outside because

people hang out

at the lab pool being a creative

director

i'm in the apparel business and there's

a lot of

inspiration not only in the house but

outside

and i'd like to take you outside to see

it and you'll see all the color

and how it could be inspirational

[Music]

as i said before it's very very unique

to have this amount of property in los

angeles

what's so special about the property is

every part has its own unique experience

i made a lap pool which drops down

onto the other piece of property where

the fun pool is

the reason i call it the fun pool is

really the aesthetic

the jacuzzi drips into the lap pool the

lap pool drips into the big

real pool it's beautiful i put in a real

italian grounded brick red clay

everybody gets a kick out of it it's

just like the french open

as you could tell i love fireplaces but

this is the king

of fireplaces at the outdoor barbecue

with all the latest appliances it's a 12

foot

fireplace and it's beautiful and it

keeps you warm at night

and one of my big secrets here is what i

call my own private retreat or the

hideaway

it's got a beautiful brown bed

fireplace when you open it up you really

think you live in a greenhouse

[Music]

well i hope you can understand why i'm

so in love with this place

and i really appreciate you guys

stopping by thank you

stick around there is so much more open

house when we come right back

this is the best of palm springs and you

will never want to leave

welcome back now we return to palm

springs for this unique

dream home this mid-century masterpiece

is reported to be

the largest of its kind in palm springs

with expansive

open spaces that flow easily from one to

the next

indoor and out and exquisite furnishings

and art collection it is the perfect

backdrop to that high desert lifestyle

oh and the style doesn't end at the

decor see what i mean

as owner margo edelson takes us on a

tour

[Music]

hello i'm margo edelson welcome to my

home in palm springs california

this is the largest mid-century home

built in palm springs by the famous

architect howard lapin

so there's a lot to see let's go in

you enter into our tropical courtyard

that we call

our moat

and it's hard not to notice these doors

these doors are over 13 feet tall

probably the largest in palm springs so

you needed the extra big handles

there's something else about these doors

that i really love let me show you

[Music]

this people was modeled after the gates

of emerald city

in the wizard of oz in fact the

screenplay was written

in palm springs

[Music]

come on in and i'll make you a drink

[Music]

looks like you could use a bloody mary

actually

the bloody mary was invented in palm

springs at the palm springs racquet club

[Music]

this house is over ten thousand square

feet and you really feel it in this

great room

sometimes dimensions like this can be

overwhelming for a designer but i found

it exciting

furnishing the house was easy because i

had one of the largest collections of

arthur elrod furniture

arthur elrod was a california designer

that was very popular in the early 70s

in here you'll see prime examples of his

work

this is an edward fields custom yellow

rug

the black bench is a john vessey i'm

sitting in a laverne chair which is one

of the pieces that arthur elrod chose

for the home

the couch was custom made and it's a

famous maria kipp

fabric one of the other special features

of the home is the fireplace

it was created by the artist stone who's

a palm springs local

usually we start our parties here and

then we move into the dining room

[Applause]

in my house we dress for dinner

[Music]

the orchid trees outside the

floor-to-ceiling windows in our dining

room inspired this purple color and

purple

is the color of royalty so we eat like

kings and queens in here

purple carried on into the furnishings i

upholstered these chairs

in the ultra suede from a pants that i

designed

and the dining chairs are in a purple

sequin fabric that i also used in my own

designs

i don't cook but we have a chef that

knows how to work

all these machines but what i did do is

pick out this beautiful blue color it's

a tiffany blue

that was very popular in the 1950s

there's so much sunshine

in this room and you have direct access

to the outside

[Music]

the home sits on over an acre we have a

beautiful citrus grove

and an incredible 50-foot heated pool

there are a few things better than

having your own fresh lemonade by the

pool

this is the best of palm springs and you

will never want to leave but i have

one more thing to show you

welcome to the game room

can i take your money

thank you for visiting my home and

sharing a piece of mid-century modern

history with me

y'all come back now

i love the outfit changes and take it

from a tv professional

that takes work coming up after the

break we are heading to france

yes france you are not going to want to

miss this so stick around

welcome back now we're taking a special

trip to the south of france

the kind of place where

stresses seem to just drift away in the

gentle breeze

favorite places in france

with the sevens which are the mountains

so it's just a perfect holiday area but

also you could stay here forever and

live here

this property is set on top of a hill

with panoramic view on

peak salu it has one main house and four

cottages

it's almost like a small village

[Music]

the home is defined by indoor and

outdoor living

with walls of glass that disappear the

living room has two

inviting seating areas and cozy alcoves

perfect to sit back relax and indulge

in the mediterranean lifestyle the art

in the stone wall lets in plenty of

natural light

and there is a sculptural fireplace that

moves up and down

a small open-air garden is enclosed in

glass

and connects the living space with a

sleek modern kitchen

it's minimalist in design with a single

slab stone countertop

and hidden cabinets and doors and you

can even dine

alfresco on the shaded passio

and now about the grounds this property

is almost

four acres of mediterranean splendor the

paths are shaded by

oak cypress and olive trees there's a
