In this video, I will tell you what a vpn is, explain some of what it does, and tell you how it can protect you when you're on public Wi-Fi in places like Starbucks or at the airport. I'll cover how it can keep you safe, how it can help you access accounts while you travel, and we'll even talk about how it can save you money.

hi my name is Nicole Welcome to my
channel travel to money in this video I
want to talk to you about why you need a
VPN for travel I'll explain what a VPN
is how it can help protect you how you
can use it to access Services when
you're not in your home country and how
you might just be able to use it to save
a little money if you are new here I
have created this channel to help you
learn about how to travel adventure and
have fun on the road to financial
Independence I have traveled the world I
own a couple of houses in Spain and I'm
on a creative journey to financial
Independence I believe the road to
Financial Freedom can and should be fun
I hope you'll subscribe and join me on
this journey no matter where you are
starting from okay let's jump in and
talk briefly about what a VPN is VPN
stands for virtual private Network okay
so what does that mean well you know how
when you have your internet set up at
home and then you can name your Wi-Fi
and set a password for it so that
neighbors or people passing by your
house can't just log into your network
well that means that you have a private
Network it's secure okay so if your home
network that has a password for just you
and your family is secure what does an
unsecure Network look like well the
easiest examples are public Wi-Fi spots
like Starbucks or maybe when you're at
the airport a lot of the time your phone
will warn you that you are joining an
unsecure Network now if you're like me I
never really cared I just wanted to
access Wi-Fi but I didn't know what
being on an unsecure Network meant
several years ago I was chatting with
one of my co-workers who was pretty well
versed in the it space he said most
people would be shocked to know how
unbelievably simple it is for a very
amateur hacker to get access to any
information when they're sharing the
same Wi-Fi unfortunately a few years
later a few of us at my job learned this
the hard way now it's always hard to
pinpoint how someone hacks into a system
you don't know if it's something that
you access at a Starbucks or if it's a
company who had your information and
then they got hacked but here are some
things that either happened to me happen
to co-workers or happen to friends of
mine my credit card number and
information was somehow retrieved and I
had fraudulent charges on my card
someone else I know had their email
hacked and this might not sound that
major but this is what they did they
went through the person's email and read
specific messages about money transfers
so they knew how to communicate just
like this person then they changed the
settings to where anyone sending
messages to this person would
automatically go to a hidden folder so
that they wouldn't be able to realize
that their email had been hacked then
they started sending messages with
wording like this person requesting the
completion of money transfers this was
pretty Advanced it took a while to
figure out and unwind what they had done
fortunately there was a tell but my
friend was lucky because in most other
instances it wouldn't have been
noticeable another friend of mine had an
Instagram account with over 10 and
followers someone hacked into her
Instagram somehow changed the password
and unfortunately Instagram doesn't have
a good way to retrieve these kinds of
accounts they were blackmailing her for
money and asking her to make a transfer
in order to get her account back
literally holding it for ransom she had
to start her Instagram account all over
again this was a couple of years ago and
she still doesn't have even half the
amount of followers all of these are
reasons that you need a VPN if you ever
want to use public Wi-Fi again due to
some of the situations that we faced my
job provided a VPN for us and required
that we use it anytime we are accessing
company information especially when
using any public Wi-Fi as it turns out
ever since we started using this one
company who I will link below in the
description we've never had a security
issue again now will it guarantee that
you will never have an account hacked no
but it will guarantee that you don't
have one hacked because you're using
public Wi-Fi Now Security in my opinion
opinion is the number one reason that
you need a VPN if you're traveling but
it's not the only reason the next thing
I want to talk about is accessing
accounts while you travel what do I mean
by this well let me give you some
examples when I took off on my first bit
of long-term travel I was in Paris I was
running my house as an Airbnb in Florida
and my guests emailed me with a
suggestion about a few items that would
be nice to have in the house I actually
thought their ideas were great and
decided to order them for the house from
my Amazon account well I had no idea the
headache this would cause I guess Amazon
thought that someone had hacked my
account because they could see that I
was ordering from Paris they completely
shut my account down I couldn't log in I
couldn't see anything I had to spend a
couple of hours on the phone with them
trying to sort it out and get my account
restored they also didn't seem to be
able to advise me on how to complete an
order from Paris without triggering the
fraud system again then it hit me I
should try on another device but this
time time I should use the VPN if you
don't already know when you use a VPN at
least with the VPN company that I use
when you open it it will show you a list
of locations and how fast they are
working at that moment when you turn it
on to apps websites or even hackers it
makes it look like you are logging on
from a network somewhere else in the
world and you get to pick the location
there are several countries listed as
well as U.S states I realized that I
could turn on the VPN make it look like
I was in Florida and successfully place
the Amazon order I couldn't believe it
it worked not only did it work for an
account like Amazon but it also worked
when using some streaming services if
you aren't already aware if you use a
streaming service like Netflix for
example they have different rights to
different shows in different countries
so I was watching episodes of Frasier
when I was in France but then when I
went to Italy that show wasn't available
and I couldn't continue with the series
I was watching enter VPN now a lot of
these apps have figured out how to tell
where you are even when you're using a
VPN so it doesn't work with every app
and website but it does work for some
and can really save you some hassle when
traveling well I've told you about how
that can really be a convenient but
there may also be a way that it can save
you some money I've only used this
method once and I think there could be
some healthy debate about the ethics of
it but for some search engines you can
also use a VPN to get lower prices on
things like flights for example flight
search engines and Airlines know that a
person in or from the US will probably
pay more more for a flight than a person
from a developing country who may not
have the same Financial Resources even
Uber does this they will charge One
customer more than another if they think
that customer is likely going to be
willing to pay more so you can use your
VPN to make it look like you're in
another country and see if you can find
those same flights for Less to me it's
not worth it if you're only going to
save a couple of dollars once I was able
to use this method to save about a
hundred dollars on a flight it took a
bit of poking around but I was able to
figure it out in my case I paid for the
flight in a different currency and could
see what the currency exchange was going
to be I use a USAA credit card that
doesn't charge me fees for purchasing in
another country and currency so that's
also something to consider like I said
this isn't something I've used regularly
but it's certainly an option depending
on the site you're using and how they
track devices and locations I'd love to
know what you think about the ethics of
it I'm not sure I think that Airlines
and other companies should charge
different prices for the same flights or
Services just because they think one
person will pay more than the other but
does using the VPN Advantage exploit
those who have less I don't see the
direct link but I'm open to the fact
that I could be missing something and if
you think I am please tell me just
please find a way to do it with kindness
some companies also offer things like
streaming services for less for example
my best friend is from Portugal and she
also has residency or citizenship in the
UK as well plus bank accounts and both
while we were traveling the world there
was a show we wanted to watch that was
on a streaming service that would
usually cost thirty dollars per month in
the US and you could only get it as an
add-on to another kind of subscription I
don't remember if it was offered in the
UK or in Portugal but she was able to
get the service for just seven euro per
month which is less than 10 US dollars I
was like wow now not everyone can do
that because I think you'd have to use a
European bank but we were able to use
the VPN to allow us to log into the
account no matter which country we were
in it baffled me that the very same
service with the very same shows is
offered to other people for less than
one third of the price now this was
several years ago and a lot has changed
in streaming services I just think it's
important to know that depending on
where you are in the world or where it
looks like you are at in the world can
really change the price you pay for
different Services anyhow I still think
the main reason you need a VPN is for
security and the conveniences when you
travel are definitely a perk too like I
said I've got an affiliate Link in the
description for the VPN I have used for
years you can protect your accounts for
less than the cost of a cup of coffee
every month I think they're the best VPN
service for a lot of reasons but I
really like the fact that they don't
record or store any of your browsing
data they are 100 open source making
them secure and transparent they have
built-in ad blocking which protects you
from harmful sites and ads and gives you
faster browsing and they have 24 7
support available whatever you do just
don't ever get on public Wi-Fi again
with without the support of a VPN
that rhymed well thanks for watching
stay safe and secure out there I can't
wait to see where your dreams will take
you
