10 Cinematic GoPro Shots YOU NEED in your next TRAVEL FILM

Welcome to this video today,

we're gonna be sharing ten cinematic GoPro shots

that you need in your next travel film.

Now, making a travel film can be hard,

especially if you don't have a shot list.

So today, I just wanted to create this video

if you've got an upcoming travel, vacation,

or you're shooting a travel film,

you can just use this as a shot list.

So you can just go through some of these shots,

tick them off as you go.

Let's get stuck into it.

Shot number one is the "hyperlapse."

Now, as technology has evolved,

this has become readily easy,

and extremely available

especially on the GoPro HERO9.

Now, there's two ways that I recommend

that you create a hyperlapse.

The first is just like forwards or backwards.

So it's just moving from point A to point B.

And the second is panning.

It's the same thing,

it's moving from point A to point B,

but going around the subject.

Now, if you've got the HERO9 (or HERO8),

you can also try tapping to real time.

And if you checked out my last video up here,

that'll give you some insight as to how you can maybe

use that as a transition.

And lastly, I'll say when you're creating a hyperlapse,

think about the distance

of subject to lapse.

The longer the lapse,

the cooler I generally think it is.

(lively music)

A dome is an awesome way to transition

your over to underwater content.

It looks super cinematic in a lot of travel films.

What I recommend, if you are shooting with a dome,

is thinking about your environment.

Lighting is major key.

You can get some really weird refractions in the lens

if you're shooting into the sun.

So make sure the sun is behind you,

and also think about the condition.

Is it deep water?

Is it an estuary?

Is it a creek?

Is it a pool?

The calmer the water, generally the better.

And lastly, water magnification.

These domes do create some magnification.

So if you've tilted the dome slightly upright,

underneath the water might blow up

the subject or vice versa.

So you just think about the way

that you are positioning the dome

in proximity to the water level,

but a very, very cool shot to add to your travel film.

And from the dome is the "drone."

Now this I think is a major key for storytelling.

It's come into fruition in the last five years.

The technology is readily available,

but when we look at action cameras specifically,

there's a few ways to go about this.

FPV is killer!

It's a shot which I think moves,

and bends, and blends so well

with the wide angle of action camera content.

But if you don't have an FPV,

or you're not the best FPV pilot like myself,

then you can also just mount your GoPro to a regular drone.

Super simple to do,

we just used the sticky mount,

and mounted it underneath

just to create another perspective.

Again, when I say storytelling,

it's about giving your audience a better scope

as to where you are and what you're doing there.

Next up is the "time-lapse or night-lapse."

Something which looks super dope to blend and add flow,

and to make your travel films a little bit more fluid.

They're really, really nice

for either establishing locations,

or just adding movement through your film.

Now, if you've got a couple of GoPros,

I would recommend just setting one up

at each location that you go to,

and set and forget.

If you haven't familiarized yourself

with the scheduled capture feature,

this is new to a GoPro HERO9.

Scheduled capture basically just means

you can dial in when you want that camera to turn on

and just start recording a time-lapse.

Think sunrise or sunset,

set it up before you go to bed and bam!

That's an easy way to capture bangers.

Now lastly,

I would definitely recommend shooting

in the highest frame rate.

Like choosing 5K,

because when you have a 5K time-lapse,

there are so many options that you can do

with a 5K time-lapse in post production.

Also, one last thing to note,

when you are setting up your time-lapses,

think about going for 30 minutes minimum or more

on a five-second interval,

just so you have enough content to work with

when it comes to editing.

Next up is "slow motion,"

an absolute staple of the action camera

or action travel film.

Now slow motion basically just comes down

to what frame rates you're shooting in.

Now, the reason why I think we used these shots

in our films is to create,

"Wow, guys."

Is to create those moments

that really make your audience stop.

That make them just go...

(Jake making explosion sound)

They make your audience's minds blow.

What I recommend, if you are looking

to capture buttery slow motion,

is to shoot with a frame rate

of 120 frames a second or higher.

On the GoPro HERO9 specifically,

that would be in 2.7K,

or you can capture 240 frames a second in 1080.

That is not to say that 60 frames a second won't do the job,

but for the buttery slow motion,

the stuff that really makes you go, "Damn!"

Then shoot with 120 frames a second or higher.

The next shot is probably one of the most foundational

or founding shots in cinema,

and we probably overlook it,

but it's just having a locked off tripod shot.

Something that you're seeing right here.

I've just set the tripod up, and I'm talking to you guys.

Now, this can be used to create your time-lapses,

to just to add yourself in the frame.

If you're a solo traveler,

traveling without a tripod is probably a crime.

You're gonna wanna use this to just frame up

and put yourself in the shot.

It's a great way for your films to breathe,

but it's also in post-production,

a great way for you to add a little bit more pensiveness,

a little bit more thoughtfulness.

To evoke emotion in your films

where you know exactly what's in the frame,

and you can be very meticulous about your content.

Tracking shots are a really useful way

to introduce a place,

reveal a location,

but adversely,

they're also super powerful for revealing people.

If there's a prominent character

that you're wanting to showcase,

maybe it's the hero of your travel film,

maybe it's you, maybe it's your partner,

maybe it's someone that you're making the film about.

Having a tracking shot

is a really vital shot to add your travel films,

and the best or the easiest part about creating

a tracking shot with a GoPro is HyperSmooth.

You do not need a gimbal for this kind of shot.

Now, one thing I will recommend

if you are using HyperSmooth, (birds chirping)

I tend to recommend

not having the boost option on,

because it digitally crops.

So just to add a little bit more width

or to create the wide angle perspective

of your tracking shot

is just shoot with HyperSmooth on,

but don't boost it.

Two mounts that I'd recommend adding to your travel kit

would be the suction cup mount

and the magnetic swivel mount.

Now the suction cup mount, for obvious reasons,

you can mount your GoPro or any action camera to a car,

to a surf board, to a jet ski, to anything that moves.

And also the magnetic swivel mount,

which you can't necessarily mount to everything,

but it's something that you can use.

Whether you can just stick it on a train,

or it has that element of magnet,

which just allows you to put the camera

in places you probably never thought of.

And also from a sustainability standpoint,

I prefer these mounts to say sticky mounts,

because I can get more than a single use out of them.

When I think about action camera filmmaking,

when I think about building out my shot list,

I always add a point of view shot to it.

Now you can use this to build out blocks, and layers,

and depth to your montages.

Think about providing your audience with four shots

rather than one of the same experience.

Couple of tips for creating the best selfie shots

to add into your travel films would be.

A. To move the selfie stick from either left to right.

If you create a series of movements

from left to right in a number of locations,

you can create match cuts,

or running, or diving.

The point of this is to just give your audience

a second perspective and to build out

the depth of your work.
