hey everyone Jeff here from films at
home and believe it or not we've got a
Netflix movie to review on 4K today
[Music]
hey everyone so thanks for coming back
to the channel for this review today
we're going to be taking a look at this
new release from MPI media All Quiet on
the Western Front on 4K Blu-Ray now this
was a Netflix movie that's where it was
released but it is getting a physical
media release because I assume of the
relationships with the other production
company so it wasn't a Netflix original
but it was released to Netflix so that
always helps to get something out on
physical media now this movie if you
haven't seen it yet is absolutely
incredible I mean I compare it
immediately to 1917 of course Another
World War One movie that blew me away
when it came out I think I like this
better I think this is a better movie it
won a bunch of Academy Awards for like
production design and cinematography and
it's just beautifully shot it is gritty
it is realistic it is just an incredible
film and is well worth your time I think
maybe the best world war one movie
that's ever been made like maybe that's
recency bias creeping in there but it's
really really good if you've only seen
this on Netflix this is the way to watch
the movie on the 4K disc throw that
stream away you need to re-experience
this and if you've never seen it don't
watch it on Netflix make sure you buy
the 4K disc so first things first let's
talk video and the video here it's a 4K
source so it looks incredible on 4K
we've got true 4K resolution and it adds
Dolby Vision HDR which the Netflix
version also does but I don't know if
the there's a different color grade or
it's just compression or what but and
maybe it's just placebo effect but I
swear it looked better color grading
wise on the disk here than it did on
Netflix maybe I'm crazy again but the 4K
visuals here absolutely outstanding like
there are very few moments that weren't
Perfection it looks incredible it's
super sharp it is very very well done on
the color side the HDR really does add a
nice punch I popped in the Blu-ray
really quick and while that is certainly
good on its own if you don't have that
Dolby Vision HDR giving it an extra
punch it doesn't look quite as great so
I definitely would recommend the 4K
release and it really is one of those
you know it's near reference quality
like in the cinematography itself is so
incredible and just the way the movie
was shot that it looks awesome on your
4K TV this would look awesome on like a
4K projector I know most of them can't
do Dolby Vision but like this is a movie
that definitely deserves to be seen on a
full home theater setup with the biggest
screen you can find it is an epic that
demands that in the 4K release Here by
MPI is really well done it is you know
not a huge leap over what you could get
on Netflix but where there are some
darker moments in this movie that's
where you start to see compression art
of of facts pop up on Netflix that's all
resolved here in the 4K disc there were
just a couple of minor moments but
overall this is really really well done
now the audio in this is another huge
reason because I don't believe if I'm
remembering this correctly that Netflix
gives you true Dolby Atmos they sort of
give their streaming version of Dolby
Atmos because it takes a lot of data on
the disk here you're going to get that
full thing you're going to get the
actual Dolby Atmos not the kind of
package deal they do on streaming
services and let me tell you if you
thought the visuals were reference
quality wait till the sound kicks in
because this creates an amazing
immersive experience like you really do
feel like you're in the bunkers right
you feel like you're in the middle of
World War One there are so many great
moments and War movies are always great
for Atmos tracks like they always seem
to be some of my favorite I mean for a
good reason there's just so much
happening there's bombs blowing up
overhead there's bullets hitting the
ground bullets flying around you
explosions to the left and to the right
and the atmos here here just sounds
fantastic you know some people might say
I think there's a few times where the
dialogue kind of drowns out because of
the background noise but I do think
that's intentional like that's part of
the experience they want you to sort of
put you in the trenches right and so
when there's a conversation happening
there's no issue the dialogue is is
pretty clear I didn't have a lot of
balance problems didn't need to adjust
the volume there were a few moments
where like yeah the dialogue's hard to
make out but I do like I said I think
that's intentional so I'm not going to
give it any down marks there it could
have been brought up a little bit higher
compared to sound effects but honestly I
think that may have detracted from the
experience because you know what when
you were in the trenches you really
probably couldn't hear each other so
it's a very realistic experience now the
packaging here might give some people a
headache it's really nice great artwork
on the front great artwork on the back
you got the 4K disc on the inside you
also get some essays you get one from a
German historian on the war and you also
get an interview with director Edward
burger and then you also get the Blu-ray
disc on the back so it's this media book
packaging with the cool spine the
problem is if you compare this to a
standard Blu-ray release you can see
it's much taller right this is DVD size
packaging so if your shelves are set up
for DVR for blu-ray size packaging this
might be a little too big personally I
don't mind it because I can always find
a spot for a film like this in my
collection but that may hurt your OCD if
you're a collector now the special
features on this are also pretty
impressive you've got an audio
commentary from director Edward Berger I
think he is a really interesting guy one
to watch it one foreign film at the
Academy Awards best foreign film and he
gave a great speech there too it also
has the making of a featurette the
trailer the teaser the booklet here
which includes a couple of those essays
most of the features are sort of the
commentary in the making of you do get
that trailer teaser and then they're
considering other features to be in this
24-page age booklet which is included
and unfortunately looks like mine
actually separated the Staples separated
from the spine so that's a a little
disappointing considering I have only
opened this once must have come undone
and Transit I'm just noticing that now
as I'm doing this review but overall you
know I think that this the packaging
could probably have been
a little bit better especially now that
I'm seeing this that my booklet is
falling out but outside of that there's
really not much to complain about the 4K
visuals are incredible the audio is
reference level stuff this is the type
of audio that Dolby Atmos experiences
were made for so if you have that you'll
love it if you don't have Atmos that's
fine you can actually listen to an
English dub in 5.1 but the only way to
get the atmos is to listen to the German
audio which means you're going to do
subtitles doesn't bother me but you
don't get that if you do want to do
English that English dub is not terrible
English dubs have come a long way but I
would always go for the original audio
in the original language but overall a
really great release would have liked to
see a little more Care on the packaging
so I knock a couple points off for that
but overall a solid four out of five
with the audio visual really being a
solid four and a half out of five and
the only reason it's getting a four is a
little knock against the packaging which
I don't love so if you do want to pick
this up we have to support movies like
this which were on Netflix and get of
physical releases so you can find the
link in my description and in the pinned
comment that'll help support my channel
if you use that link so I always
appreciate that but it's well worth
seeing and if you're going to watch it
definitely watch it on disk especially
if you've invested all the money in your
home theater the Netflix stream will be
fine for the most people for the average
person but you know you and me we're
home theater enthusiasts we're
collectors we want the best and this is
by far the best that you can watch this
movie so thanks for watching this review
hope you guys enjoyed it make sure you
follow me on social media and subscribe
to the channel here so you never miss a
video also like this video so others
will see it we can spread the word about
physical media I appreciate that and of
course check out my podcast and all the
other links down in the description for
ways you can support me my partners and
the channel which I greatly appreciate
as well so thank you all have a great
rest of your day stay safe stay healthy
