VPN stands for virtual private Network a
network is all the devices attached to a
router that provides internet access
through an internet service provider or
ISP ordinarily your data travels to the
internet on the networks of your ISP or
other isps it has agreements with
when you use a VPN your data is
traveling inside your shell which makes
it part of some other network instead of
the one you're physically connected to
the shell is often described as a tunnel
but you can also think of it as
traveling through the ocean in a
submarine you're in the ocean but not
affected by it you don't get wet drown
or get attacked by sharks
your data gets the IP address of the VPN
network instead of your Network's
address encryption protects your data
from prying eyes and criminals and you
can access resources on the internet
that are allowed on the VPN network but
may not be allowed on your home network
Newport wireless mesh is a non-profit
all volunteer internet service provider
in Newport Vermont we help our
subscribers every day with questions
they have about how to use the internet
like what's a VPN and do I need one
see the description below for more

and how to donate to our work developing
community-run wireless internet
here are some of the advantages provided
by a VPN your VPN may be set up so your
data travels as part of your company
network instead of the network you are
physically connected to at home so no
matter where you are you can connect to
the resources of your company Network
like data on their servers that you need
for your work just as if you were right
in the office
it also means that hackers who might be
able to gain access to a poorly secured
home network can't because you're safe
inside your VPN shell
a company might also set up a VPN that
includes all of their offices no matter
where they are in the world so users of
the VPN can function as if they were all
in one big office
individuals responsible for
administering a network for an
organization can set up a VPN that makes
them part of that Network so they can
access it to make changes repairs and
help users just as if they were plugged
right in even if they are thousands of
miles away
many ordinary internet users subscribe
to a VPN service in which the network
you are traveling in is one set up by a
VPN service company for a reasons of
security and privacy more about that in
