Our verdict of the AmpliFi Teleport HD: 9/10 - The Teleport will be a lifesaver if you're frequently on the move and want to take your home Wi-Fi with you. Hopefully the options to power the device will be more versatile in newer revisions.

for people that are frequently on the

move away from the warm cozy home Wi-Fi

you know that there are some inherent

concerns with using public unsecured

Wi-Fi as well as other limitations when

using the Internet in another country

amplify wants to make these problems

completely go away with this little guy

the all-new teleport HD device using the

ancient dark arts of VPN have they done

it spoiler alert this thing is Magic

Virtual Private Networks or VPNs have

been around for some time mainly to help

businesses connect two or more sites

that could even be in different parts of

the world via the Internet for the

typical home user this can be complex to

set up and your average home router may

not even have native VPN support to

appreciate how easy amplifies teleport

HD makes this let's do a quick VPN 101

borning technical details incoming for a

basic VPN setup you need a client and a

server first these two devices need to

agree on a protocol like PPTP or lttp

over IPSec and then some method of

authentication like a pre shared key as

well as username and password now this

is where it gets fun

the client will need to know the

location of the server which will either

involve a statically assigned IP address

or a dynamic DNS address both of which

may require a subscription now if you're

Richard doesn't support VPN natively and

you have something like open VPN setup

on another machine in your network you

will also need port forwarding once

that's done it's just a matter of making

sure the VPN network ask Recruiting's to

the local network setting up times and

doing some testing if that sounded a

little complicated that's because it is

it is doable with the right hardware and

know-how and the necessary subscriptions

but the average person isn't going to

care about that the teleport HD removes

all of that complexity with no

subscription costs and no maintenance

like I said magic so why would you want

a VPN you may ask well there are three

main use cases for VPN connection number

one you use public free Wi-Fi for

examples ones in coffee shops which

could be unsecured free Wi-Fi is often

unencrypted and we'll leave you wide

open to man-in-the-middle attacks

malware and even fraud we've covered all

of these a little more in detail in the

full article a VPN will help protect you

against these secondly if you frequently

travel abroad and you are robbed off

your hvl watching privileges you to do

restriction having a connection back to

your home network or

kind of trick your streaming provider

into thinking you're sitting at home

Hulu and chilling including reports of

being able to get past a Great Firewall

of China impressive lastly which is my

main use case is remotely getting access

to devices and services that are at home

safely and securely

these can be filed shares CCTV cameras

remote desktop etc so in this case the

teleport will create a secure tunnel

back to your home network and as far as

your connected devices are concerned you

will pretty much be on your home Wi-Fi

the trade-off is that there is a

performance hit when using a VPN this is

going to depend on the speed of both

your home connection as well as the

connection you're using away from home

that's because all of the traffic will

have to first go through wherever you

are through a tunnel to your home

network and then back down that tunnel

to the devices you're connected to

okay so we've spoken about the why and

the how let's get to the product so the

amplifier HD system is one that we

recently reviewed and absolutely loved

and the teleport HD device is an

extension of that so you will need an

amplifier router and a teleport device

to make this all work you can either buy

the teleport as a standalone or a kit

like this one amplifier continues the

beautiful packaging and design in the

box you get an amplifier router and it's

power cable as well as the teleport

packed inside this little guy is both

Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces as well as

the technology needed to connect it to

the VPN the LAN port on the bottom can

be used to either connect to the

internet in a Whang configuration or to

connect your laptop in a land

configuration now this is where voice my

biggest gripe with the teleport HD

namely the us power interface now the

input voltage shows that it should work

anywhere in the world but I really wish

the way to power this device was done a

little differently ideally this should

have been a USB C port which will allow

this to be powered via a power bank but

at a bare minimum this could have been

an interchangeable power prompt thingy

like this one I say this for two reasons

if you're a frequent traveler you

understand that not everyone uses the

American standard so you will need to

carry an extra adaptor depending on

where you're going the other thing is

that if you're in a coffee shop and

there's no power point close to you

you're going to have to interact with

other

beings in order to get this thing

plugged in somewhere excuse me do you

mind if I plug this in near you oh sorry

can you get this plugged in for me that

kind of thing

moaning aside getting this device set up

was really to be straightforward I

didn't come across a few small snags

which was my fault and I've detailed it

in the full article the surefire way of

getting this device set up is to have a

Wi-Fi hotspot from your smart phone

handy because the VPN and the amplifies

Wi-Fi are on the same internal network

which might cause a problem this is more

of a networking thing and not something

specific to amplify I've seen some very

complicated answers regarding this

online but in a nutshell this is because

if the teleport tried to create a VPN

tunnel to the internal home network

using the Wi-Fi that's also on the same

internal network I've seen some people

not have a problem with this and they've

used amplifies Wi-Fi to set up the

teleport but if you're having issues

having a smartphone hotspot on hand will

help right now plug in your teleport and

get ready to pay it to the router once

the teleport is powered on you can

connect to it using its open native

Wi-Fi SSID which should begin with the

word teleport once connected a login

page will take you to the initial

teleport setup which simply asks you for

a new Wi-Fi name and password this is

the only information you will need to

connect to the teleport once you're away

from home so make sure you remember the

password the teleport will now look for

a network that it can use to get its

settings from the router this is where

it might help pointing it to a hotspot

as opposed to the amplifiers Wi-Fi at

this point the teleport sends a request

to the router which you need to approve

so as soon as you're ready fire up the

amplifier up and there should be a

request for you to pair the teleport to

the router and that's it your teleport

is now paired with the router now we

need to test all of the salt so let's go

to a coffee shop okay so here and now in

a James a little help please thank you

okay so here I'm now in a coffee shop

as you can see denoted by my coffee mug

and the sound of people snapchatting

their food so the reasons we mentioned

we want a VPN at this point is because

of security and the second part would be

to access some services that we have

that are back home so before connecting

to any Wi-Fi I grab my teleport and plug

it into a power outlet in the coffee

shop when the teleport comes online we

see the name that we set up earlier

under the available Wi-Fi connections as

soon as I connect to the teleport I

choose which connection the teleport

will use to connect to the internet and

just like that it creates a secure

tunnel back to my home rest assured my

traffic is now encrypted and lo and

behold as far as my laptop is concerned

it's on my home network I can see all of

my network shares and other services

that are on my home network to get an

idea of how speed is affected we can run

a simple speed test remember this isn't

going to be an exact science and

depending on the connection of both

internet connections your mileage may

vary remember this will work the same

when you're traveling and any device

that connects to your teleport will

think that it's on your home network so

you can get around any G restrictions as

well so ladies and gentlemen what do you

reckon well right now I don't think

there is another vendor doing anything

like this making VPN this easy is pretty

special you can also pair multiple

teleports with a single router so

everyone in your house can have a secure

connection this is a near perfect score

from amplify and while this might be

subjective I wish there was still a way

that you could power this device using

USB C or micro USB I know how well you

bicker t pay attention to their customer

base so hopefully they will have this in

future releases of the teleport other

than that another brilliant product from

amplify it takes something as complex as

a VPN and makes it look effortless

through their testing you can connect

something crazy like 50 devices to a

single teleport so even if you have

multiple devices that want to benefit

from its secure connection you've got

nothing to worry about mark my words

there's going to be many other vendors

trying to implement something similar to

their product lines so now if you want a

simple robust VPN amplify is your best

bet thanks again to ubiquity and amplify

for sending us over this unit feel free

there are always some giveaways

happening be sure to check out the full

you guys in the next one

adios
