over the past few years
european economies have faced huge
challenges but european football has
been remarkably resilient to those
we've seen revenue continue growing
despite the tough economic times
and nowhere more so than in the premier
league
the english premier league is now almost
a billion euros ahead of any other
league in europe by revenue
and the season just coming up it's going
to move even further ahead and that's
because of the new broadcasting deal so
the premier league is getting its best
ever broadcasting deal
five and a half billion pounds across
three years and that's going to give
them a huge gap over the rest of europe
but the business is also very strong on
the commercial side
and on the matchday side so it's hard to
see another european league overhauling
the premier league at the moment well
deloitte's spent 20 years now tracking
uh football finances from the very start
of the premier league to now
and what we've seen is amazing success
in growing revenues almost unparalleled
in any other industry but a big big
challenge in controlling costs
new rules are coming in now to try and
help the clubs to effectively save them
from themselves to
make a profit and to protect the balance
sheet
that's the big test for the next couple
of years will those rules bite and will
we see something else happen to the
revenue other than it going to players
we've seen the premier league be
phenomenally successful and sometimes
that overshadows the football league
but in reality although the premier
league has been such a great success the
football league's done very well too
a really strong competition more revenue
in the football league than there's ever
been
the challenge for those clubs is running
their businesses responsibly so they're
competing to try and win and they're
aspiring to be the best they can be
but not overstretching themselves in
pursuit of
the holy grail of getting to the premier
league
