is your host of African country TV show
Christina David Pinto jr. I am finally
out of the studio and I decided to come
out and interview some people to catch
up on their perspectives are not really
important to know where you come from
for getting culture and American culture
there is nothing but love and joy and
peace so proud of being African someday
soon TV show
and culture TV show TV so frickin
culture TV show weekend family Africa
and culture TV show
[Music]
African TV show in Lisbon exactly
prosperous commercial you're gonna see
what sweetheart
done fire artist originally from
Washington DC danced with conker on West
African dance company one of the
nation's premier West African companies
here and I'm here now there's a solo
artist and very grateful to come down to
Encinitas to bring a piece of the West
African drum dance culture to match with
the drum and dance culture here so it's
like my family and this class is
organized by Diane she's here every week
making sure that sometimes the schedule
varies but how they're going we are a
multicultural West African traditional
West African dance class we have a co-op
of teachers that come from San Diego and
Los Angeles and even other states New
York and DC Chicago and other countries
Africa and in some coming from Europe
who come to share the African culture
with with people of the culture and
people who are not of the culture a lot
of our teachers find it part of their
calling to share their gift and that's
what this class is about
we have a give a platform for West
African dance teachers and obviously
drummers as well here in Encinitas
California my name is Tony being a
drummer who has not yet been to the
continent of Africa for me Africa is a
future dream a goal and a place I would
like to more of the culture firsthand
and so that I can bridge that gap
between West African culture and
American culture kizomba is a historical
type of dance originally in Angola has
sensual steps and it has spread
worldwide and people look forward to it
let's watch misconceptions that I come
across with
all ages from children to adults is that
people think that Africa is a cult
continent of lack where it is very rich
very rich in culture and resources in
history everything that you need to
sustain life is there and in abundance
so I think one of the biggest
misconceptions that we have here in
America and it's just based off of pure
ignorance and that is one of the things
that he stresses is to ask your teacher
to get an understanding and so that you
know what rhythms you're playing and you
know what they mean because everything
every song every rhythm every dance has
a purpose and so that's something that
for me I enjoy about the culture is
learning all of the history and every
movement means something
[Music]
[Music]
in Canada in the West Indies and I live
in so I never had the chance to share
and see my so I came here to visit his
family and to learn about Portuguese and
like Mozambique and all the culture you
know certain just think that it's really
important to know where you come from
and who is your family that's why I came
here and culture and how I think that
family or African family he's my friend
he never sold them the African culture
we are open to everybody
it's about generosity like being like
helpful with people always trying to be
nice with them and I think that's
about African people you you
have to use somewhere like love like
generosity opening be nice people like
that's it and when I came here I visit
this family from Mozambique I can tell
that's totally true like
as I said you don't know me and I can
sleep I can eat I can do whatever I want
like you family yeah for sure and we
live in Canada what is the difference
between African culture and American
culture but I would say in the Nigerian
culture specifically they're very
family-oriented they're thinking about
how can we all grow as a community
I know one thing like in Nigeria if I
grew up there I know that I would be
going to neighbors homes and my parents
wouldn't really be worried about me
because they trust their neighbors to
raise their kids here I feel like
there's a fear of your next-door
neighbor like you don't know if they are
serial killer you don't know your
neighbors like that so I'll say that to
me being born here and having a
background of Haitian that everything we
do is always found in us together when
we do parties is families having parties
together and everything when it comes to
the American scene it's always like the
kids are their own thing the dogs I
don't think it's never combining a
family affair so I feel like a cop again

you're watching episode 11 was just
recently coming back from Abidjan West
Africa and Cote d'Ivoire I was able to
see the strong family minds that were
present there the laughter and joy that
was found over a simple meal
in a dance class or in a drum circle
there was nothing but love and joy and
peace and happiness and that's something
that we desire to bring here especially
to Southern California and Diane is
definitely doing that here by bringing
masters from all over the world to
Encinitas it's a very important place
for our African pioneers as we still
have African pioneers residing here
within the area who bring the culture
directly from Africa
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
here at Encinitas West African dance and
one thing we explained to all the new
students who come in is that by taking
West African dance you are actually
foundation in yourself to be able to do
all rhythmic dances
if you foundation yourself in the rhythm
and learn to connect with the African
drums you are much more able to move
forward into all of the rhythmic dances
so we appreciate that the ruse of the
rhythmic dances are coming from the
continent of Africa
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
so the misconception is that there is
nothing there
everything we use even down to our
televisions and cell phones and video
games in the cars use alloys and metals
that are only found in Africa so our
iPhone or Android phone would not work
unless it was for that alloy in in
Africa misconception is that African
Americans and Africans are different
that is a huge misconception when I
returned to Africa
I felt as one there was no difference
there was no
[Music]
oh I'm from Binney no I'm from Abidjan
no I'm from Guinea it was all unity war
starving and without and that's that's
not what I saw when I went there the
difference that I feel between
african-american family culture and
African family culture it's just a level
of unity slavery has really pulled us
away from that aspect of the unity
that's why we encourage a lot of African
Americans to return to Africa so that we
can see our original state and sort of
speak will you see that the entire
family donates to the household that no
child is left behind everyone's taught
everything everyone knows how to sew
everyone knows how to cook everyone
knows how to provide for the family no
one is left behind and I think that's
something that's a major difference
between African American families and
African families that we need to bridge
that gap and definitely look out for one
another just add a little bit to that I
think one thing that we as Americans
could stand to do a little bit more of
is to pay a little more homage to our
our ancestors and our elders that may be
one thing that I see Africans tend to
give their elders a little more respect
just in general and broad as a human
being if you are older than me there
they give a greater level of respect
than
I would say our day and age of
african-american does and that I think
would even change us as a people and
push us forward if we don't look towards
those who have already paved the way for
us and get the knowledge and the wisdom
that they have for us then we fall into
some of the pit stops and pitfalls that
they have already you know worked around
and it's giving us unnecessarily work
and I just think it's a level of when
you have a respect for yourself and when
you come from it's much easier to just
give honor to those who have come before
you
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
it's very important to be an African
American in this country
not a lot I studied some things about
Africa I do do you have some friends
from Africa
I believe that Africa is country and
culture TV show come to you to introduce
great Africa entertainment I think is
important to preserve our culture here
it's having an understanding and feeling
of our culture grounds give us pride of
our identity food artistry music and
fashion enriches our life and
appreciation of rich constraint and
family ties between members of different
generation please give us your feedback
or you like to send us your African
video content
[Music]
[Applause]
you're watching episode 11 what are you
doing here and how is it important to
use a misconception about misconceptions
is you know I don't know you know enough
for the Tarzan movies that I've seen and
I used to think it was immature somewhat
of what I'm missing in the movies what
do you mean is most important in you
from
[Music]
see I think in my immediate family is
that my children learned to love each
other and respect others it's up for any
of you sir no problem main foundation
for just building I would say our
culture even stronger everything starts
at home I think the more that we can
take care of home the more we can take
care of others I have a good
understanding that Africa as far as
today or what it was was a was a place
of peace paradise for its own people
nowadays I will say is more you're
watching episode 11
a shopping mall if you is to say
property and real estate is more of it's
not hard to come up with the word for
what it is my opinion is it's not what
it used to be which is a problem
[Music]
communication is key to every
relationship without communication
furlings agendas cannot be passed on a
family has to be able to communicate
with each other on different levels
[Music]
[Music]
you know everybody has to do things I
love you might not want to do something
in our brothers we do it out of love I
think that it fully it sort of makes a
good effect that's you're trying to do
the difference between African culture
and American culture we have been you
know absent after and we have been shown
after African purser is me myself I have
not been so after I have had encounters
with people from there and they tell me
that
we are
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
cultural values respect loyalty is like
just kind of how I pretty much those are
the two words that mean the much the
most to me definitely go along with that
respect has a lot to do with pretty much
everything so what is a priority family
I want to provide for my family so
everything I do would be for my family
like anytime I'm doing something I'm
thinking about my family so I can make a
better life for us in general so same I
just pretty much want to create a few
times you know about Africa just like
reading books and TV cultural values my
culture values to be respect number two
will be loyalty what is what is a
priority in your family my family watch
I build my family of love and loyalty
number two will probably be like
financing knowledge and education what
is the difference between African
culture and American Court
tough question probably say I will
probably say it's more like not just
family wise what culture was hi my name
is Rosie Herrera you guys doing here we
took out our children to go eat and then
we wanted to spend a little bit of
family time are your cultural values
what we like to spend family time we try
to teach our children to be respectful
to Africa is it's a big country
[Music]
beautiful jungle the Safari you know a
lot of people that are African American
and they're pretty good people did you
know that there was a misconception
about Africa
[Music]
and no keep them a little bit about what
you think on the way people judge Africa
as far as the people or maybe whether
they judge the way to think about it
[Music]
[Applause]
you're watching episode 11 a lot of
people do think that maybe over there
it's like a more needy country I've
known co-workers that are they have gone
and they say they have it's beautiful
parts to what is a priority in your firm
just to be healthy and learn to be a
respectful
[Music]
if you haven't visited a country then
you don't know really what it's like
what is the difference between African
culture and American culture the
difference would be what they do maybe
the way they dress how they spend family
time thank you to that man you don't
think you want is African African
African culture TV show I hope you enjoy
watching the show I really want to
please stay tuned stay tuned a type of
music and ordinarily the beloved in
Luanda Angola of course when my dad came
from let's watch me being born here and
having a background of Haitian that
everything we do is always families
together will be new parties families
having parties together and everything
when it comes to the American scene it's
always like the kids have their own
thing
the dogs I think it's never combining
it's never a family affair so I feel
like an African and Caribbean families
are more connected I always promote
dance in general I feel like the answers
a way to express yourself in some type
of a heart that it speaks language to
people can be from a different
background speak a different language
but speak the same thing when it comes
to dancing music is universal
[Applause]
[Music]
the small undeveloped fish
[Music]
hello guys it is your host of African
culture TV show and the weather is
fantastic today so I decided to come to
the beach interview some people on their
perspectives on Africa what they know
about Africa what are their family ties
cultural values what is the difference
between African culture and American
culture let's watch about Africa it's in
Africa are that the children are raised
very respectively
marriage is a priority and the family as
that it's more United
now as to America out here everything is
individualized it's between African and
American family ties family ties in
Africa then here in America is that
primarily your goal is to make money and
family is secondary so you have to do
whatever you have to do and go through
all the struggles and life to make sure
that you're able to provide for yourself
it's very selfish here in America
as to Africa families first and they do
whatever they can to make their family
work together to get whatever they need
this is not so much of a union you do
what you want to do you can show as much
skin as you want the children are not as
respectful because the family values in
the older generation have changed today
[Music]
[Music]
having an understanding and feeling of
our culture grounds give us pride of our
identity food artistry music and passion
in which is our life an appreciation of
rich constraint and family ties between
members of different generations being
raised in an African family than in
American family because I can only see
young kids playing with phones play
watching TV all day and the parents they
don't they just had enough of them
screaming so they just turned the TV on
sit them there and let them behave and
do whatever they gotta do I don't think
that's the right way when I was younger
even because maybe I I don't know I was
raised by an African dead I was I don't
know outside working and I had to
deserve my lunch or my dinner I had to
work for it
[Music]
and also if I if I'm meeting new friends
certainly I don't use like Xbox or
Playstation like they do today playing
on fortnight or whatever to meeting
people online I just used to go outside
in the park play some football some
rugby with friends and just meet see new
people that's how I made friend my
opinion is just to different world
Africa is one war the USA is completely
another one
there's there's no way to protonate them
to have a beautiful life live here
because maybe for them is more easy but
maybe even in Africa this situation
doesn't meet friends go out for what
they can do so maybe you go you meet
friends I go in Italy for example from
Africa respectful each other the dance
you know as a sister ELISA teaching
Kazan back competition I think you know
we just wanna tell you a little bit how
this dance is beautiful and it is
densest are in the house of the family
you know and it's a lot of different
ways of hit that you can involve your
pants music and the look in Luanda
Angola of course when my dad came from
let's watch
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
faster Nathan Terry you tell me a little
bit about your plan you today basically
I'm just spending time with my kids and
my grandkids now here two redundant beat
sister have some family time I think
family time is very important especially
being a grandfather being a pastor it's
all about family values you know
communication learning how to spend time
together to interact with other people
but I reside in Tulare California where
I am a pastor just try to relationships
because I feel that relationships are
very important culture
changing the diameter what you make your
life it's not about what people say your
life it is if you want to be successful
you get up and go to work if you want to
drive a nice car you gonna work for it
if you want to succeed in this society
you work for it no one's going to give
you anything can you talk about the
misconception on Africa well a
misconception I think on Africa is
everybody's one in one bucket
you just throw everybody in one bucket
and say hey this group of people is bad
or this group of people is this or if
this group of people is that when if you
don't personalize yourself and get to
understand the culture of how a person
was raised where
come from them it's a different diameter
when you do that grow up with a family
that are hard-working
and you begin to see that hard work and
then it rubs off on you and you become
that kind of person so it's in the
society they say that we're are one kind
of people we're not because we were
raised in so many different cultures and
different styles every race you have to
go from there african-american culture I
think the difference to me is sort of
the same thing
[Music]
oh yeah night going today's you tell me
a little bit about what the card is
about and what are you doing here well
it's about the IRA Chuco of
end-of-the-year parties your cultural
values well one of the culture and
values is for you know for you to
respect your elders you have to dress
properly you have to address people in a
proper manner when you go out there you
want to represent your community in a
good standing you want to make sure you
make your people proud make them
understand that you coming from Africa
and we still go back home we still go
back to the roots where we come from
that's our roots it's just that my
interview oh you welcome anytime anytime
[Music]
[Music]
but your family ties
my mother family from losing in there
my grandma's she came out here on the
train and raised nine children my mother
she come on found me at nine
and I have about 30 some cousins I grew
up in the household which is my mom and
my sister I'm learning everything on my
kind of two feet you know tell me a
little bit about the difference on
African culture and American culture yes
it's more of a competition there's more
of a fight for your rights I walk into a
job and it'd be probably like five six
more different races in my race so it
probably like two of my race and you
know but you still there
you know is this you know it just feel
like on uneven you know battle where you
feel kind of like uncomfortable
sometimes and you feel like you're
always being watched in music the look
and wander and voila
of course when I thank you
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
what suggestions would you give to the
new generation fight strong stand strong
stand your ground don't let nobody take
your ground if you were there stay there
because things will change you know one
person could change many you know so if
you have an opportunity to show how
strong cuz I worked at the pleasure here
I was the only black dude and a black
woman but just me just you being there
standing your ground makes makes a
process makes a mix of other days make
makes makes you look like you know I'm
here we actually from Irvine California
when you're asking where we born maybe
we say we have Korea Sunday afternoon
sunshine what do you know about Africa
I forgot really know too much about
Africa cultural values Africans they
value family a lot more than here in
America that's a lot different of how
you treat your family and certain things
Africans seems like from what I've
experienced cuz my cousins I have extra
cousins that are from Ghana so they
stick together they're there for one
another there
[Music]
African African African culture TV show
I hope you enjoy watching the show I
really wanted to please stay tuned stay
tuned why is the difference between
African culture and Korean there's a lot
but make a simple and short African
culture is very secret and didn't
explode my shout the world obviously
many countries in there that are not
being exposed it's being belittled but
Korean culture is diverse flying very
fast and laugh so we are Korea is little
dynamic Africa is a hidden treasure
African culture so I could really
compare
two countries
about American culture the difference
between American culture and Korean
culture
again Korea is pretty dynamic lot of IT
business software IT technology but USA
is just totally good on every corner
it's been here 400 years of lead over
King in the worst American culture hard
to say what is what very strong nation
with a good custom cheese Amba is a
historical type of dance originally in
Angola has sensual steps and it has
spread worldwide and people look forward
to it let's watch
[Music]
no Sunday dad Sam Sullivan Gustav EDA
some sound that is such Paris a
ain't got no someone that can dig escape
from some combat your honor
good my yamaraja very much
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
the misconception is that there that
Africa isn't just something someplace
that needs help besides I mean the
United States has a lot of homeless
people too so you know it's where we're
not being judged by just our homeless
people so much more here and then
there's so much more to Africa than just
you know famine and disease and poverty
there's more to it than that in the
United States they are creating an image
of the single parent and the single
parent household and how the the family
unit is not as strong as it was in the
United States as it used to be maybe
Africa's family units are a lot stronger
and it's not just a mother and father
that's in the family it's you know the
mother-in-law's the grandfather's aunts
and uncles it's all together one family
instead
[Music]
is African African African culture TV
show I hope you enjoy watching the show
I really wanted to please stay tuned
stay tuned hey guys his name Nakia
antoinette what did you plant here today
just hanging out we came after lunch
just to have some ice cream because it's
a nice beautiful sunny day
where's the ice-cream good it was very
good I had strawberry cheesecake one of
your favorite suits what is your actual
favorite probably mint chocolate chip so
what are your cultural values my culture
values I was born and raised here in
California my whole family is here I
have family also in Texas I was born
here in California also you can tell me
about your family ties I'm very close
with my family very close-knit family we
hang out we spend all of our holidays
together
family functions Thanksgiving we're all
together I have a small family just my
immediate family with mom and kids
that's it you know on Africa I have a
lot of co-workers that will knit that
come from Africa some from Nigeria some
from Ethiopia some from Ghana
I know they told me it's very
inexpensive to live there and they plan
to retire there but they come here
because they make more money and they
send their money back and build but if I
base it on what I see on TV they always
show you the part where they're polished
and starving and like Ethiopia and send
money for the children get to taste a
lot of different foods from my
co-workers from the culture I have
students they ride my bus I'm a bus
driver so I have a lot of students that
ride the bus and they just tell me
different things when they go a lot of
them have not been to Africa their
families are from Africa but it's in
fact the younger generation has it had
not been you know going back to visit
their country
what is a priority in your family health
what is most important education
[Music]
seems that you guys are like take care
of each other more like more family live
in the same house and take care of the
parents the younger kids take care of
the kids live with you guys till they're
married or you know different things but
I know that family values do mean a lot
the misconception about Africa
[Music]
here is that there just have less
opportunity and that they're poor then
America do you appreciate when I hear
stories from people from Africa because
it gives me a better understanding about
my culture as well you're watching
episode 11
