hello we are back on the dr joy show and

i am your host dr joy this show will

enlighten your awareness while traveling

or exploring the country of zhuhai china

i was honored to be chosen as a

representative for herzing university as

their first professor to travel overseas

as i entered into a five month teacher

exchange program i was elated to gain

the experience of another culture by

simultaneously teaching and lecturing

about american culture

all of this took place at juhi college

of jalen university although i made many

friends and learned a little chinese i

do plan to return someday in this

episode i will lift up my experiences

and i repeat my experiences on chinese

culture as seen through

my eyes

before i start i would like to elaborate

on what culture is

culture is the lens through which you

i and others view the world how you were

raised and the environment for which you

were raised all make up your culture so

sit back and get ready to take this

journey with me

what you see on your screen

is a map of china

if you look at the bottom right just

between hong kong and macau

sits zhuhai china

showing now is the different flags as

you know the american flag was

introduced to america in 1782 for which

it had 50 states at the time now 52. the

colors on the flag are red white and

blue which represents the following the

red signifies valor and bravery the

white signifies purity and innocence

while the blue signifies vigilance

perseverance and justice

and the 13 stripes represents one for

each of the original 13 colonies

whereas the country of china has

providences instead of states

there are 23 provinces

five autonomous regions and two special

districts which is hong kong and macau

the red colors on the flag represent the

communist spirit

the large star stands for the communist

party

the four stars are the peasants workers

boy glc's and patriotic capitalists

working together to further the

revolution

america and chinese use different names

which can be confusing to both countries

for example in america the family name

is used last for example michael smith

in chinese culture it would be smith

michael thus the family name is used

first

even some sports names are confusing

i observe that what america know as

soccer is called football in china

and what china know as football is

called soccer in america

now before you travel to china it's good

to know how to greet and accept

invitations in america it's customary to

greet someone with hi how are you

however in china you will hear

nehau ma

which means the same

another greeting would be

chaffalema which means have you had your

meal lunch etc

of course you would say no

if it's in the middle of the day but

this is how it's done

in china they don't really want you to

answer the question but it's just a form

of saying

a salutation

americans may say what have you been up

to and we asked questions that we really

do not warrant a true answer but use

also as a greeting so i was often asked

where are you going which threw me back

some because i learned that it was just

another way of addressing and as you

know

me

i don't like to be asked where i'm going

so it threw me off a little bit and i

had to be

taught that it's just really a greeting

such as with gestures touching and eye

contact let's see how

in china gestures sometimes have

opposite meaning that americans might

receive for instance the sign shown on

your screen means good luck in america

while in china it represents the number

10.

while touching the chinese are less

comfortable with this as americans are

we hug and shake hands as means of

showing friendliness and community in

china hugging is not done unless it's

with close friends or family it's not

that they do not want to touch people

it's just a cultural

avenue

the chinese do not hug to show

friendliness instead a nod is sufficient

however in america hugging is more

accepted as a way of culture

and there are always exceptions to this

rule but as you know before i left china

everybody was hugging

in america we teach our children to look

directly in the eye of the person you're

conversing with thus the chinese culture

is taught not to make eye contact

because it's a sign of disrespect take a

look at this funny tune as you see two

men from different cultures walking past

each other and thinking do not make eye

contact

as we move to the differences in eating

and food i would like to make mention

that the chinese food you eat in america

is nothing like the chinese food you

would get in china the seasonings are

different and preparation can be

challenging let's see why

food is prepared and processed

differently in china with chicken fish

and beef

for example fish is cooked with the

whole

head and tail attached

chicken is not just pulled from the bone

and eaten with fingers

thus this is considered nasty and

unsanitary in zhuhai china instead

chicken is chopped up

and eaten as we eat neck bones in

america ground beef is hard to find but

beef cubes are very very popular within

the chinese culture food is shared as

you see on your screen

various dishes are placed around a table

while friends and family dip in and

feast or place a little on their plate

or on their rice bowl

shown on your screen is the first meal i

prepared while teaching in china

at the far right bottom you see chunks

of beef and mushroom cooked together

along with smothered tomatoes broccoli

and potatoes and of course rice

rice is eaten with almost every meal in

china for breakfast lunch and dinner

joining me this evening were two chinese

students

when we return we will continue our

journey into the world of chinese

culture through the lens of dr joy after

a word from our sponsors
