Final year students at the School of sport, health and exercise science, Bangor university are given the opportunity to present their dissertation findings at a student conference.

You may also like to read about:

today the students have been showcasing

their third-year research projects and

dissertations so these are their

in-depth studies of a topic of their

choice so this is a bit they get really

excited about because they spend the

first couple of years doing core

subjects and then they get to work and

be mentored by a member of staff to

understand one particular field of

sports science in real detail which

makes them like a mini expert doing a

conference you have to present

information and you have to go through

the nerve wracking preparation and then

the positive outcomes of doing a

presentation and gaining confidence and

I think that gaining of confidence is

really really important for students

going on to whatever careers they do a

respect for first sport science not from

simple things like giving presentations

in a future job or actually getting the

job in the first place being putting the

pressure in an interview situation and

learning to control nerves and things so

I think for that it's it's a real it is

a stressful day for them but I think

they gain a lot of transferable skills

which help them beyond their degrees

with us

so the conference involves students

presenting the research from research

projects and also involves students

showing all of the other people in our

cohort their findings from other

stations so I thought was really

interesting to hear other people's

studies and how they differed so much

from mine and it was really really

interesting to present my study because

I was very nervous about it but once not

now I've done it it's off my chest I'm

really happy that I have done it because

it's gonna help me in the future what I

have to present conference day is where

you present your dissertation to your

supervisors and a cross moderator you

get quite a long time to make an a.1

poster with a brief overview of your

dissertation so you can have your

purpose why you wanted to do the

question the introduction the methods of

how you found all the papers if you have

inter stations are looking at Google

Scholar and the keywords and obviously

having your results exist agent then

discussing your results and what I found

most useful was being able to go in each

section I did was going talk to my

supervisor you might not realize it but

your project proposal is infinitely it's

so important to get it right

so put in as much effort as you can

right from the first day from when you

know what you want to do and try this

out on a research topic as early as you

possibly can because the earlier you

decide on something you want to do the

more time you have to focus on it and

prepare a well-thought-out plan for your

research so my involvement today has a

staff member is to assess the

understanding the students have of their

projects and we do that in pairs of

stuff so and we go and ask questions so

their posters and and try to find out a

little bit about what they've done and

to challenge them with more difficult

questions to find out how much they

really know about the subject it's

definitely something that's an

experience for us all because it's not

something that others have done talking

in front of people and in involving

yourself in a formal yet fairly informal

conversation with your lecturers to try

and get your point across and it's it's

something that is there

come in handy when you're tying for jobs

or seeing what you're doing next in

interviews and stuff he's taught me some

skills like presentation skills it's

definitely helped me and hunts those

sorts of skills and it's also given me

an idea about what a conference stays

like well they don't do it I know that

everyone with quite nervous but actually

when you get to do it it was a really

good day like I think it's helpful

talking to other people about what

they're doing and they can give you an

insight onto your study the quality of

the presentations here are generally

excellent and it's really nice to hear

from external examiner's that often they

tell us that the quality of the

presentations here are similar to that

that they might see at a national or

even international conference so the the

quality of the research here shines

through into the student work and they

should all be very proud really of what

they present today it is definitely been

like a really big confidence boost

nicely to see what all these friends

have been working on for like the whole

year as well so it's just good to be

able to see everyone being able to

present their work and just be really

proud about this
