these are things you shouldn't see ask
not what your government can do for you
ask if your government is screwing you
can't have a war without an enemy you
could have one can be very dull or
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're
counting down our picks for the top 10
movies that make you distrust the
government a member of the board of
directors of the Soylent corporation was
torn apart with a meat hook you can't
sweep that carcass under the rug for
this list we're taking a look at movies
that for one reason or another make you
question the institution of government
and the officials that are part of it
you're not wearing a wire because
everything you suggested is illegal and
you wouldn't fare too well in federal
prisons in case it isn't obvious we will
be talking about these films in detail
so a spoiler alert is necessary right
they keep him in the Senate I don't kick
him out
you know he stays number 10 the Ides of
March I'm not a Christian I'm not an
atheist I'm not Jewish I'm not Muslim my
religion what I believe in is called the
Constitution of the United States of
America this movie focuses on Stephen
Myers the junior campaign manager of the
Democratic presidential candidate and
Pennsylvania Governor Mike Morris we're
gonna create a national unity we're
gonna teach young people a trade and
we're going to get them out of debt for
their college loans now where does that
fail oh that's exactly right governance
just if you're gonna do it do it
Morris's recent fling with an intern on
his campaign left her pregnant and this
could seriously ruin his career why is
the governor calling you at all
I'm in trouble Morris a highly
charismatic politician who'd previously
espoused his desire to run a clean
campaign makes several deals to cover up
the potential scandal which makes him
yet another dirty politician you want to
be President you can start a war you can
lie you can cheat you can bankrupt the
country but you can't the interns don't
get you for that leaving us reflecting
on whether it is possible to have
success in politics and remain loyal to
your ideals we see a man who made a
mistake but wants to do good become yet
another tool of the system look you all
grown up it's it's an all I learned from
the best
number nine Soylent Green in a dystopian
future where overpopulation pollution
and depleted resources leave much of
society dependent on processed foods
including the titular Soylent Green
something is not as it seems though it's
ostensibly a movie focusing on the
murder of a wealthy businessman it's
actually a government that would do
things like run state-sponsored assisted
suicide clinics that adds the most
intrigue to this story of course it's
ultimately the massive and massively
corrupt Soylent corporations that the
government protects that will leave you
aghast when you discover the true
content of Soylent Green you gotta tell
them number eight a Clockwork Orange
Alyx DeLarge and his droogs are a group
of nasty young men who spend their
nights handing out some ultraviolence to
whoever crosses their paths that's why
it's a truly amazing feat that by the
end of this film alex earns our pity
while the institutions are the ones that
have earned the government through the
prison system puts Alex through a
treatment meant to rehabilitate him but
in actuality it's no more than
experimentation even his former criminal
friends are now cops which is even more
evidence of how sullied this film's
government has become number seven wag
the dog it's like they diploma yes like
being a problem
do your job right nobody should notice
everything gets full of [ __ ] in this
political comedy the president turns to
spin-doctors when he's caught coming on
to an underage girl and their advice is
more than a little unorthodox you want
me to produce your war not a war it's a
pageant we need a theme a song some
visuals we know it's a pageant
recruiting a Hollywood producer to
distract the public they craft a new
narrative about a fictitious war against
Albania complete with iconic images and
film footage okay good put the village
behind ya don't have to be a conspiracy
theorist to think that the government
keeps secrets from us in real life as
this has been proven time and time again
but this film may leave your head
spinning and wanting to wear a tinfoil
hat whenever possible when this goes
national I get to put it on my resume
it's actually no because like what is it
a gild thing or something I mean you can
never tell anyone you did this well what
could they do to me take him home for
your house to kill you
number six V for Vendetta remember
remember the fifth of November the
gunpowder treason and plot I know of no
reason why the gunpowder treason should
ever be forgot there is a reason why in
the years after this film's release the
Guy Fawkes mask became a symbol of many
political protests people should not be
afraid of their governments government
should be afraid of their people in a
future version of England where the
country is under the control of a
fascist government that rules with an
iron grip one man wearing a mask becomes
a symbol of rebellion
there is more than flesh beneath this
mask there is an idea mr. great and many
countries today don't have the control
they do in this film but while stories
of increased government surveillance
permeate our news we left V for Vendetta
and capable of shaking the feeling that
they'd certainly like to any discussion
of this document or its contents will be
regarded at the very least as an act of
sedition if not a willful act of treason
number five good night and good luck
good night and good luck a magnificent
film that tells the tale of Edward r
murrow a radio and TV journalist
standing up against his own government
it's an inspiring tale of patriotism
made necessary by dark days he proved
again that anyone who exposes him anyone
who does not share his hysterical
disregard for decency and human dignity
and the rights guaranteed by the
Constitution must be either a communist
or a fellow traveler Senator Joseph
McCarthy is a blight on the history of
the American government using the power
that his position afforded him to ruin
lives and using America's fear of the
supposed Red Menace so well that he
could and would accuse anyone he pleased
we helped nobody like him gains power
ever again we will not walk in fear one
of another
we will not be driven by fear into an
age of unreason if we dig deep in our
history and our doctrine and remember
that we are not descended from fearful
men good night and good luck doesn't
need to manufacture distrust it instead
serves as a teaching tool of what can
and has gone wrong Santa's going to vote
to censor McCarthy tomorrow probably and
then what happens sits in the back row
number four Fahrenheit 9/11 as Bush sat
in that Florida classroom
was he wondering if maybe he should have
shown up to work more often
should he have held at least one meeting
since taking office to discuss the
threat of terrorism with his head of
counterterrorism michael moore's
documentary focusing on the presidency
of george w bush is highly controversial
as it's said that in it he plays fast
and loose with the facts he's a rude to
suggest that when the Bush family wakes
up in the morning they might be thinking
about what's best for the Saudis instead
of what's best for you one thing we know
for sure though whether or not you trust
the filmmaker wants the credits roll
it's more likely you're not gonna trust
a government led by President Bush on
March 19 2003 george w bush and the
united states military invaded the
sovereign nation of Iraq a nation that
had never attacked the United States
largely focusing on the reasoning that
was given to the world as a pretext to
the Iraq war many people left this film
feeling lied to by those who are
supposed to represent them you get
called up you go back to Iraq no you
know what repercussions do you face yes
number three The Manchurian Candidate
Raymond Shaw is the kindest bravest
warmest most wonderful human being out
of and out of my life when a platoon of
soldiers is taken by the Soviets and
they managed to make their escape
largely unscathed
things seem too good to be true by the
President of the United States and it
may not surprise you to learn that they
are this film and it's surprisingly good
remake depict a government experimenting
on soldiers with the soldiers
brainwashed into being assassins
shoot Bobby Reagan through the forehead
yes ma'am
once the Manchurian Candidate comes to
an end we begin to wonder if governments
in the world we live in have done just
that
including to their own men if the people
fighting for their country aren't safe
then how can we be you couldn't have
stopped them the army couldn't have
stopped them so I had number two all the
president's men fan that's a page one
story they can in some place a
dramatization of the real-life efforts
of journalists Bob Woodward and Carl
Bernstein to expose the criminal
behavior of President Richard Nixon
following the Watergate break-in this
film's happy ending is that they succeed
with help from the mysterious source
deep throat in a conspiracy like this
you build from the outer edges and you
go step by step
unfortunately that ending also implies
that nobody in the government can be
trusted and that we depend on a
crumbling profession to protect us from
the men and women we elect in our view
the story of a president's
administration sending people to break
into their opposing political party's
headquarters is a perfect example of how
power can ruin ethics this is so crazy
this whole thing didn't start with the
bugging of the tentacle
so Grady was doing this a year before
the buzzer before we reveal our number
one pick here are some honorable
mentions chatter Alden
we've calibrated their side they
practice on moving targets
they already
the Houston
I tell you there's nothing on the judge
Jack did something on everybody man is
conceived in sin and born in corruption
I stand for the separation of church and
state and the reason that I stand for
that is the same reason that I believe
our forefathers did it is not there to
protect religion from the grasp of
government but to protect our government
from the grasp of religious fanaticism
number one 1984 Tami Winston and
remember no lies what are your true
feelings towards big brother it took an
amazing narrative of the worst case
scenario in government to top our list
and this adaptation of George Orwell's
1984 is just the film to do it Smith
6079 Smith W yes you bend lower you're
not trying the people who live under the
thumb of Big Brother not only have to
spend their days doing his bidding but
the concept of thoughtcrime personifies
the level of control being demanded so
crime does not entail death I have
committed even before setting up an D
paper the essential crime that contains
all others L cells a warning of what
life could become if the powers of
government aren't checked there's no
film that will make you rethink politics
more than this one in pain and
humiliation otherwise you cannot be sure
is tearing human minds apart and putting
them together again in new shapes of
your own choosing do you agree with our
list what Louise made you distrust the
government for more intriguing top 10s
