I spent some time on the football field teaching a group of kids how they can use Newton’s Second Law to improve their game.

hey guys backyard scientist here and
today we're gonna be doing something a
little bit different today we're out
here with Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and
we're gonna be doing this year's prank
it forward video where we give some
deserving kids a chance to let out their
inner grain before we go meet the kids
let's talk about what we're going to be
doing in this video as you can see we
are on a football field then while I
might not be the biggest football fan in
the world I find the science behind it
super interesting you have these big
athletes powerful collisions generating
tons of force it's not all math because
even a smaller team can go up against a
larger more intimidating opponent and
still win so that got me thinking could
I use science to help kids go up against
a larger team and still win what about
somebody as large as this guy I'm coach
- I'm with the North Valley Golden Bears
North Valley Golden Bears is a program
that's been around 40-plus years we've
had a lot of kids that went on to do
great things and we're pretty much just
getting them ready for high school it's
not so much about winning or losing is
pretty much just about basic football
and preparing them for the next level my
boys are very strong they don't quit
they give us a hundred percent some of
the kids that we're gonna be playing are
a lot bigger than us so I want to get my
boys ready I think the kids are gonna be
a little surprised you know like I said
I have tough kids but to see that sumo
wrestler I think my kids are gonna be a
little worried but I think we will be
okay how you guys doing today alright we
have a very important guest today we
have a scientist that's gonna teach you
guys about the physics and how we can
hit and how we can be more safer so I
want you guys to pay attention to him
and let's show them a lot of respect
today guys got it alright so how are you
guys doing today no I have a scenario
for you I know you guys are football
champions right so save that then
fighting your game for their football
championship right Friday night it's a
big game and you're standing there on
the line and there's this one really big
guy just staring you down and he wants
to turn you into a pancake what do you
do go low a little bit get an extension
out yeah yeah that could work too and
you know why all those things work is
because of force now in science we use a
term called you know it's Newton's
second law force equals mass times
acceleration
pretty simple right well you got to take
into account that with your acceleration
is actually the derivative of Delta V
over delta T and if we're talking
velocity we also have to be talking
about mentum right so momentum here mass
times velocity and of course we need to
be talking about friction so dynamic
friction we have static friction which
is basically you know you're gotta come
over here and a friction which is yeah
that's pretty simple right I think you
guys got it I've got a friend that can
come out here and since you guys
understand all this so well you can run
some drills against him you can tackle
him he can tackle you it's gonna be a
pretty good time I think you guys can do
this all right
Buttercup come on out
[Music]
[Music]
well we need a volunteer who's gonna try
first
[Applause]
[Music]
all right so who thinks they can take on
a sumo wrestler yeah all right let's do
it
combatants you may enter the ring Derek
come on in Remy
let's go okay take your positions
[Music]
three two one
[Applause]
[Music]

[Music]
[Applause]
okay nobody was able to defeat Remmy so
going back to F equals MA we're gonna
either need to add more mass or some
more acceleration
let's try mass first Remmy how much do
you weigh 5 pounds 500 pounds what about
you Jeremiah how much do you weigh
76 pounds blessin 72 thousand 72 and
Derick 165 pounds okay so I think we
need about 70 you to equal the mass of
Remmy but I don't think that would ever
happen in a real game having seven on
one so let's try increasing our
acceleration if we just get a few you
guys to explode off the line and
increase your acceleration you should be
able to take him down
on the whistle three two three two three
two one
[Applause]
let's bring it in all right guys you're
gonna be playing a lot of teams are
tough they're big they're heavy so if
you're facing opponents that are larger
than you scarier than you just remember
F equals MA so if you can't increase
your mass you got to increase your
acceleration you got to explode off the
line and really hit them hard
get them low and work as a team to bring
them down I believe you can do it all
right
[Music]

[Music]
so these kids have heart and it was
awesome to see them play without any
fear or hesitation obviously we had a
little bit of fun with this situation
but the takeaway is real
if you can't increase your mass increase
your acceleration to generate more force
and I think those kids showed some real
heart going up against some real giant
opponents thanks again to Kellogg's
Frosted Flakes for making this possible
and for helping the North Valley Golden
Bears let out their inner grade be sure
to check out all the other prank it
forward videos and all the other great
kids in them thanks for watching this
video
backyard scientist out thanks to
Kellogg's Frosted Flakes for sponsoring
