roku is not my favorite device. This is due to a few things that the device lacks overall. However, this is still an extremely popular device. It is perfect for people that JUST want to stream from official content. I will walk you through all of the top settings to change or know about in 2023. Make sure to check them out, works on roku ultra, roku Premiere OR any of the roku sticks.

now I have been a bit of a Roku hater in
the past okay it's honestly not my
favorite device I just think there's
other better competing devices out there
that can do a little bit more but I know
a lot of you have them so today we're
going to be walking through the top
settings that you should either turn off
or turn on depending if you need them so
if you're new to your Roku or you don't
know a lot about the different settings
this is a great video to stick around
for now if you're new to the channel hit
that subscribe button really quick down
below give this video a big thumbs up
and let's go ahead and get right into
things so we're gonna head right over to
our Roku right now I'm on the Roku
Express I want to say this model is the
settings really don't change between the
different models I think there's a few
slight differences if you have the Roku
Ultra which I was gonna set up but I
decided not to I decided to do it on the
premiere because I think most people
have one of the smaller cheaper devices
in my experiences so the first thing
you're going to want to do is scroll
over to settings first of all the Roku
remote suck like I gotta point it right
at it it's kind of annoying
and we're going to go into settings now
I do want to start off with some basic
settings so I want to start at the
bottom because this is where most of the
bulk settings that will be changing is
in so we're going to go into the system
section now you can click on about if
you want to learn more about your Roku
build you can see your IP address stuff
like that you can see I had a kind of
block out a lot of this just because
it's private information but just really
quickly if you want to learn more about
your Roku you can go into the about
section now your time is automatically
set based on your internet connection
but if you lose or you move away and you
go to a different time zone you might
have to go in here and here and change
it but mostly if it's set to automatic
it should automatically change in 99.9
percent of cases
now control other devices you really
don't have to touch so I would just stay
away from this this just tells your uh
TV to automatically switch to an active
source source when you press your Roku
remote so that's if your Roku remote is
in sleep your TV's off and you click
your button your TV will automatically
turn on your Roku will go to the correct
input so that is always automatically
set I suggest just leaving it on I think
that's the best thing in this case
languages you would probably already set
your language when you initially set up
your device there is screen mirroring so
this allows you to mirror your screen
from your tablet from your phone and
this will automatically send a prompt to
your device before you allow that that
way not just anybody can connect to your
Roku device and start that prompt so
it's a little bit better a little bit
more security if you don't want somebody
to automatically connect to your device
so I think that's a handy setting now
software update is something I suggest
some you guys check out all the time
because there are are always constant
software updates and they don't all
automatically happen all the time so for
example I didn't plug this device in for
a long time so if I click on check now
it's going to check for the most recent
software and it's going to you see it's
going to update Prime video it might
update a few other channels and this way
you always have the most up-to-date
versions of each different app as well
as your Roku device is up to date as
well so there we go all software is up
to date we're going to press that ok
button and we're going to go back now
you can do a system restart so this is
just going to basically turn your Roku
off and turn it back on again I just
wanted to show that to you guys this is
Handy if you're having issues remember a
lot of the times your device is just
going into sleep mode so we're not
actually turning it off we're just kind
of putting it to bed right but
restarting your device will fully turn
off the power and restart and that
sometimes can fix little issues that you
have
now guest mode is an interesting one if
you have guests over say you run like an
Airbnb or something and you want them to
be able to access it in guest mode they
can go to guest mode and they can
basically you can set up a pin for your
account and they'll be able to log in
with that PIN now I haven't tested out
guest mode but my guess my best guess is
that uh guest guest anyways uh my best
guess is that essentially they'll be
able to add their own Netflix account
and that will go away after or they just
have access to certain things so it's
just a good option
now if you're really having issues with
your device you can factory reset it
this basically resets it like it was
brand new okay so it turns it off it
resets it like you got it brand new in
the box in this case you're usually
gonna have to do system updates as well
um so that's a really good uh option if
you're having a ton of issues with your
Roku last option it's nuclear option
factory reset it now there is a network
connection reset as well if you're
having issues with your Wi-Fi
Etc so device connect essentially does
these three things or lets you do these
three things so if you don't want it to
be able to pair to your Roku enhanced
remote or mirror what's on your
smartphone or use the Roku player at a
hotel or dorm room for example like it
says there you can disable that and
those will be automatically disabled as
well there's also control by mobile apps
so that's certain features right you can
control the mobile apps you need to
allow network connection to do that
that's not a setting I personally play
around with okay there is Advanced
display settings so this auto adjust
display refresh rate to the content
native format as needed so basically
depending on your TV's capability the
streaming service Etc this will
automatically change it and auto adjust
it so I do suggest turning this one on I
think it's a really good setting to have
on
now that's everything for advanced
system settings and everything for
system settings now apart from that the
next thing I really suggest checking out
is privacy I know a lot of you love your
privacy and just like your fire stick
just like your Nvidia Shield they are
constantly selling your data
so that they can give you
recommendations and they can earn money
based on your purchases a lot of them do
based on the ad spend that they have the
amount of users that are spending on the
ads they run through their device now
one way to not have them give you
recommendations and not collect your
data as much is to click on advertising
and go over to personalized ads turning
this off basically means that they won't
be collecting your data or using the
data they collect in order to give you
specified ads now if you want full 100
protection you guys know I suggest
running a VPN and down below in the
description I have the best possible VPN
you can see expressvpn right here this
is going to protect you from those
trying to steal your data and they're
also going to basically change your
location so on services such as Netflix
Etc you can get the most out of it by
unlocking geo-restricted content now
this discount gives you three months
free plus you get a 30 day money back
guarantee so if you don't like it click
on it and get your money back at any
point try it for 30 days again if you
don't like it get your money back before
those 30 days happen
but of course turn off those
personalized ads there's really no
reason to have it on if you love those
tailor ads and you're like well if I'm
gonna see ads anyways which you are with
the Roku
um I might as well see ads I want to see
then keep it on obviously right so it's
really just preference at that point
there's not really anything you have to
check out in legal notices that I would
suggest now Apple AirPlay and home kit
I'm not 100 sure as I've never done
anything with apple AirPlay with this
um so it might be something I'm assuming
that just has to do kind of with uh
screen mirroring but on your Apple
AirPlay but I'm not familiar with it it
might be something that you have to
check out now payment method you can
have your PayPal automatically connected
which I have connected so if you want to
make purchases through your Roku you can
go ahead and do that it might make
things a little bit easier now next up
is your home screen this just has four
different settings you can toggle on and
off and these are essentially just the
menus you see in your home screen so
your featured free sections these are
the featured free content if you want
that showing you can show it if not you
can hide it that's the same with your
save list so these are certain apps Etc
that you're saving same with your feed
if you want your feed hidden and same
with your shortcut so it has ad channels
and TV off for example so if we go back
all the way out of settings for a second
and we go over you can see here featured
free your save list so these are free
content available on the Roku that are
featured at the moment okay your save
list which I don't have any obviously I
don't use my Roku much your my feed
which should change based on what you're
searching etc those will all be able to
be toggled on and off depending if you
want the setting active or not so it's
totally up to you if that's something
that's all in your home screen
now there are a few audio settings you
can change up so for example there is
your menu volume so this is the sound
you're going to hear when scrolling
through your menu you can completely
turn that off or you can turn it higher
lower depending if you like those audio
signals while you're working on your
device there is audio mode which you can
switch from audio stereo Auto Stereo to
stereo right so this will just change up
based on the format and what settings
you have active there is audio preferred
language which again you can change
based on your own language there's
streaming audio format now this is a
good one you can change from Dolby DTS
or to audio auto I just leave it on auto
because that kind of just gives you the
best based on your own situation and
there's digital output formats this is
audio format settings for HDMI output so
for your HDMI output you can change it
to Auto to stereo to custom again if you
want Adobe or DTS active both those are
available there as well now captions of
course a lot of people love having
different captions so inside of the
captions section you can actually change
change up a ridiculous amount of things
everything from the text style so it's
going to give you examples while you go
through it to the text size to the text
color so if you're somebody that really
uses captions this is going to give you
the captions that work best on you if
you're colorblind if you have trouble
seeing smaller text if you have trouble
with certain you know maybe windows or
backgrounds they have so many caption uh
customizations I'm not even go I'm not
even going to go through them all
because there are so many to check out
in terms of captions Now display type
here you can set either to automatic
which will be 1080P or you can set it
based on your own situation so your TV
does not support 4K so if your TV does
not support it it will let you know I
think it automatically adjusts based on
your situation I'm obviously have it
connected to my monitor so it only shows
so much so you can set it to 4K all the
time if you want and then it will just
downscale from from there based on the
content you're watching so if you have a
TV that can handle 4K 60fps definitely
set it to that and that way it will just
downscale if there's certain content
that's not going to run at that display
now Roku does have some themes that you
can play around with so different
wallpapers different screensavers so if
you don't like how your Roku is looking
we can set this as our wallpaper it's
going to change it to nebula we're just
going to give it a few seconds and then
we can set back and now it's just going
to give it a slightly different look so
it's really based on how you like the
style of your backgrounds they also have
screen savers some really nice
screensavers actually we're not going to
worry about sounds so there are
automatic wallpaper updates there's
wallpaper animations which you can turn
off if you want that's just going to be
the movements that happen in your
wallpapers or in your screen savers
there's the start time for the screen
saver now I suggest this set at 10
minutes I think that gives you enough
time to go do something and come back
when you need to and then of course you
can always set back to your default
whenever you want now as for remotes if
you have issues with your remotes you
can always try re-adding your remote and
that just happens by setting it to
pairing mode so if you want to learn how
to automatic medically reset your remote
make sure you click here where I teach
you everything about your Roku remote
I'll see you guys in the next one
