ON THIS EPISODE, TEAM TARDIS interviews artist KELLY YATES. In Kelly's words "I currently work full-time at Kontoor Brands (Wrangler & Lee Jeans) as a Senior Graphic Designer, and illustrate comic books part-time. I’m best known for illustrating multiple comics and covers for Doctor Who (IDW/Titan), and designing the My Hero Academia and Doctor Who Kawaii toy lines. I’m also the creator of Amber Atoms, a creator-owned comic book series that was originally published by Image Comics.
My passion for art, especially comic book art, stems from a family road trip out to California when I was 12-years old. On the way back, we stopped at Yellowstone National Park for the night and to my distress I quickly discovered they had no TV’s in the entire building. Luckily, the gift shop had a few comic books. The one that caught my attention was Cyrstar #6 with Nightcrawler on the cover. I have been reading comics ever since." - kellyyatesart.com

that's how hashtags work you know I
leave it to the professional
There You Go Thomas right keep going
there's two comments there you go there
you go
Legend the traveling Tardis yeah yeah
current one and then we got the Matrix
five on Gallifrey nice
okay so I'm just gonna start off with
that now I I started we were chatting a
little bit before uh before we went on
air and everything and how how I was
kind of reading through your CV a little
bit of the about us page uh on your uh
on your website
um art of Kelly yates.com
uh no Kelly Yates yard
but then when you get on it it says the
art of the videos I'll make things clear
you know money
why not there it is
um so you started drawing a little later
in your career it wasn't something that
you you were you were kind of doodling
while you were in college so can you
tell me when when did you really when
did you start getting the the creative
bug and then realized you know what I'm
gonna nurture this
uh that's always a great question always
uh I for me it started I was always in
the comic book starting about 12 years
old I got into them started kind of
exploring it but you know
um I was in school I was kind of playing
sports I was playing football I actually
played a year of college football
um and I was like those guys got pretty
big pretty quick I'm like this is not
disposed the way but you know I was I
was doing these more athletic things and
I was going to the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro studying exercise
support science for three and a half
years but in the background I was
reading comic books and joining uh that
type of uh sci-fi culture
and uh you know I got three and a half
years into my program and I'm just like
I don't think this is what I'm supposed
to do in my life
um and so I always kind of doodled a
little bit you know kind of drawing a
little bit on the side of the paper in
the classroom and literally a guy that
went to school says man you want to be
an artist I was like hmm I wonder if I
could
so I actually start working at comic
book store and now I get home and doodle
and keep drawing you know get like
anatomy books and when I turned 21 I was
like I think this is what I'm supposed
to do so I ended up going to a place
called Guilford Technical Community
College because I didn't know how to
turn on a computer literally my first
class there at this Community College
the guy's like okay we're gonna turn on
these macintoshes and this is like 93
94. we're gonna turn and we're gonna
start up paint and do pixels and blow I
mean like this was like free Photoshop
one I mean this is what it was and I
literally raised my hand and I was like
um how do you turn on a computer
everyone
has to do something first every no
matter what everyone has to do something
for the first time you didn't you don't
get just you know spit out at the
hospital from your mama and go okay well
I know I know mathematical science
yeah and from there it's just this
gradual building learning how to draw
studying art books studying another
artist learning tips and techniques from
other people and just kind of like it's
just years of applying it and I think
I've been pretty successful so
did you have did were you drawn to a
specific medium at first and then moved
into like the digital age as as it kind
of grew along with with you
yeah absolutely I've always been into
the comic books like I said that was
kind of what I was I didn't want to be a
fine artist I mean I like the idea of
painting and doing things like that
um but I was always always have and
always will be drawn to comic books
visual storytelling
um but there was always the traditional
just pencils inks that type of thing and
there definitely was a transition
in my career to moving more digital so I
was doing kind of like digital layouts
and then printing out an income
traditional sometimes now deadlines and
a lot of edits I work full digital but
just really depends on you know the
project at the end of the day
dude
now I'm I love reading comics and I only
know a little bit of the actual
the process of of doing sequential art
as one of my friends went to school for
and I went what's that mean he goes
comic books I'm like ah thank you
um but I know that there's a difference
there's a difference between a penciler
an anchor and then a letterer so did you
find that you were one of those or one
of those more your Forte and
well it's fine so as you've seen some of
these images I think on the opening
screen it's like you know uh the
illustrations with the colors that's all
me so I do all my own colors all my own
designs it's all me doing all the
illustrations however when I first
started I did just want to be I want to
be a penciler that's all I wanted to be
you know I'll just I just want to draw
somebody else can ink me so I can color
me so I'm making a letter
let them do that let me just pencil and
be dynamic well a couple jobs into doing
a couple pencil projects I start
figuring out like oh my gosh these inks
the inks they're putting down over me is
not what I envisioned so I started
having to learn how to Ink myself a
little bit okay to get a little bit more
I want
then the more starting projects out
there
um some coloring projects I was like oh
gosh this is this is not what I wanted
this is not what I wanted and again it's
nothing against like anybody it's just
not what I envisioned how I wanted my
art to be so learning how to color so
it's just it was more of this necessity
of I wasn't satisfied with what I was
seeing so that's when I started learning
it and I like it too because at the end
of the day it is my full illustration my
full vision
um and that's why I probably do a little
bit more cover work and less sequential
work interior work just because it's
very difficult to do all of it interior
this is the volume of it time so
unless you get the cover you're on the
front
and that's really the important thing
right next next next to the paycheck of
course right all right
sometimes more yeah yeah this doesn't
pay much but it'll give me a little bit
more notoriety it's a yeah is tricky
what was your first comic job like how
did you break into the industry because
I mean I'm I'm more familiar and a lot
of our audiences can be familiar with
you with Titan
um with Doctor Who and you know Doctor
Who podcasts all this fun stuff but what
was your first
was that your first No Doctor Who was
not my my first stuff
um some of my first work was uh actually
doing a couple of Pinups and small books
I couldn't even tell you half of them I
remember one of them was Telos which was
a independent book by Mike Ringo and
Todd dizago
um those guys so that was one
opportunity
um actually uh Michael Ringo who uh
he was one who actually tried to get me
my first job this all kind of like
pre-internet and so somebody said hey
Mike's trying to reach you by phone so
we missed opportunity to do something
early on in my career with uh with
Street Fighter which would have been
really cool to do at the time but missed
opportunity but it is what it is uh but
going out to San Diego Comic-Con meeting
editors meeting people like that uh
finally met a guy at DC Comics and he
gave me an opportunity to do a green
arrow
um secret files eight page story that I
did so and then which led to like
another short story like a jlhsa short
story so those were some of my first
published works Oh wow was that during
like their portfolio reviews that they
do
yeah yeah yeah it's it's changed a
little bit now but yeah he's like you
had to get line at DC or Marvel actually
at their booths out at San Diego yeah so
that's how it worked very cool yeah what
comic book do you relate yourself to the
most what what comic speaks to you the
most out there that jumps out and goes
hey this is me
this is me well uh gosh well I might
actually say my own book and we can talk
more about layers uh Creator and book
called Amber Adams and I was originally
published through Image Comics I mean I
guess I guess it's because it comes for
me right okay there's the cover from the
uh the new uh Kickstarter uh but that's
me that's who I that's my story that's
my art that's my everything so there's a
there's a lot of as we say Blood Sweat
and Tears and that so that's kind of the
one I identify with the most at this
point so but but I do love I love a lot
of other books too I love Star Wars
comic books I love I love a lot of
independent books uh just a little bit
of everything so I still go to the
conference store like every Wednesday
go see what the new stuff's out yes
prediction it's an addiction I'm
surprised that you said Star Wars as I
look around the background here between
clearly the the episode uh to a poster
no S3
that's two that's two okay that's two
and the Stormtrooper helmets but now I
need to know is what is the toy up there
that is a vintage Death Star set
my neighbors when I grew up they walked
over and gave it to me like would you
like this like yeah
would you like this
[Laughter]
one man's trash is another man's culture
right
I found really great Doctor Who stuff in
a garage sale so I'm just like oh you
don't like Doctor Who okay oh that's so
sad
I'm sure we could do something with this
I don't know
uh we got a question from rebs Raves and
rants the most important question of all
time do people constantly ask you to be
a character in your work
um
[Laughter]
well well I think Kiana's
kind of thing going right now that's
true I forgot about that he's doing fine
on his own it was kind of like when he
when they first announced he was doing a
comic book I'm like wait wait wait I
don't intrude on your movie stuff
don't do that
no I actually I know uh the artists that
work with him Ron Garney I've known for
years and everything a great illustrator
great guy and I have just loved seeing
the success of him and Keanu working
together it's been fantastic
so one more one more uh note of me just
lurking in your in your background there
um and so then you have a drafting table
I know this is welcome to the wide world
of after after uh covet and zoom
meetings and stuff everybody that's what
everyone looks at it's like oh where
what what else is around there but I see
that you have like a a drafting table do
you tend to draw mechanically first and
then digitize or did you take to digital
like just a duck to water or what's
what's your kind of process
well I yeah well I think it was that
transition again I did everything kind
of traditional with pencils and and
brushes and and that type
um the big risk for me was now this was
like 15 years ago it was like
do I want to buy a Wacom cintiq Wacom
tablet you know like one of the big ones
I was like does that one I mean they're
like 2 500 and I've never used one
before and at that time they're like
well they're still like yeah 100 but I
was like gosh will I get any use of it
will be worth my time you know uh money
the whole thing
um I was like I'm gonna just take a
chance and take a chance and I mean it
paid for itself within like six months
and I mean I worked but I pretty much do
I still do traditional pencils from time
to time I'm doing sketches uh but I do
um do a lot of my layouts digital just
to and sometimes I'll print them out
blue line and ink especially if I'm
doing a color a doctor Cover
particularly I still like to have the
original art so I will do it digital if
there's any edits and I'll make those
edits printed out blue line which those
don't know what what that is is blue
line is just an old way of like printing
out
um when you scan it in the blue
disappears we have black ink over so we
call it blue line
um but blue line is just like a light
outline you can follow when you're
inking and it pretty much disappears
when you put the Black Ink down
um so I still like to have traditional
artwork uh uh for that but uh so and
then I'll scan it back in and color in
Photoshop
but but if I do have to work just
because of uh deadlines or something if
I have a full digital Photoshop and clip
Studio paint are my my go-to tools
yeah okay but I do use the I do use the
uh
like once in a while it's like I'm just
gonna actually use paper what is this
this is crazy
this is a different different drawing
process though you know when you pull a
pin across the the paper it's got that
you fill the little micro Textures in
the paper you don't you don't think
about it but then when you're drawing on
this plastic glass this is whoa you know
you can go a little bit fast on it and
it's uh you know thinking it's for
command Z so on the flip side I'm doing
something traditional and I mess up I'm
like oh let's hit command Z I'm like
it's real world I can't command Z can
you do that and you can't go like you
know what I don't like this I'm going to
do that a few times several times you
just keep just hold down you're like
there we go I'm gonna start back to here
again what was my last save I can't
remember
do you speaking of digital do you create
your own brushes or do you is there a
specific like brush pack that you use
are you kind of
no I don't create my own brushes I mean
I've done that every once in a while if
I need to but there's so many great
resources for that now you know Kyle
Webster has a whole pack of them I think
he's sold a lot of stuff to Adobe so a
lot of those actual brush sets are in
the Adobe program now so I mean
it's rare that you'd have to create your
own brush unless it's like extremely
specific need that you need Loft
uh I see Christian uh are we at a
commercial break we're at a commercial
break when we return we're going to
continue our discussion with Kelly Yates
and get to your questions with your turn
please continue to stay logged on TuneIn
part of the legend we'll be right back

no
meet the doctor and the doctor but not
the one you were expecting all right
sexy it's time to go home Doctor Who
velocity streaming now
oh brilliant it's hard to believe that
in the 56 year history of the greatest
sci-fi television show in the English
language there has never been a fan guy
to Doctor Who
[Music]
the official books might give you what
they think you need to know but only a
guide written by a true fan will give
you what you really want to know join
Whovian the brilliant Mackenzie floor as
she takes you on an intensive Journey
inside the world of the first female
doctor
in the binge watches guide to Doctor Who
season 11 right
let's get a shift on
we are a touring acoustic Duo crashing
kitchens around the country we go from
house to house every Friday night and we
create music we create food a good time
we stream it live and we do it for free
so now we're just really kind of like
trying to develop it and build a
community group that people believe in
then they'll help us
so we played from our rehearsal room we
played from the bathroom thankfully that
didn't catch on I probably played guitar
in my room not for anyone in front of
anyone nobody heard for probably about
10 years and then one Friday night we
played from the kitchen
it's the main place people want to be
it's where the food is it's where the
drink is it's where the best lighting is
you can go to any party and I guarantee
you the kitchen is going to be popping
our ultimate goal I think would be to
crash kitchens every Friday all around
the world
[Music]
we're back welcome to the legend the
traveling Tardis my name is Christian
basil and we have a special guest our
interview with artist Kelly Yates and
today I'm going to be doing production
and Melanie is hosting this particular
episode and we got a few surprises for
you during our uh show so without
further Ado let's bring back Kelly and
the team and thank you for coming again
Kelly and for those of you in the chats
please uh chat away any questions you
got for Kelly
um we will be announcing he will be at a
certain convention at the end of this
month I mean I'm sorry at the end of
this week and we may be there too not
physically but we'll get into that
discussion a little bit later on out
there
oh but Nick
I will be that Nick will be there
unfortunately the Tardis won't be there
but Nick if you want to check out Nick
and the man who writes up those Cosmic
masks uh you get a chance to talk to him
over at uh well we'll announce it we'll
talk about it in fact some of you right
now you may be on the Facebook page to
chat about that but then uh without
further ado
I've been having a good time asking
so I want to say Nick Dave I promise
I'll shut up now we got questions
apparently I'm up okay so oh I've you've
done the doctor who you've done a bunch
of stuff we'll get to the chats not
counting your own
what is there a property you'd like to
work on down the road
whether it's a you know a regular comic
is it a IP from TV film whatever is
there something you kind of just like oh
that that project ever happens yes
grabby hands I I have my one my one boy
there's a couple things you always want
to work on like I would love to work
with do Star Wars cover or something I
you know however the one I'm really
interested in working at I think uh
people of a certain age might appreciate
this Land of the Lost
not that Will Ferrell stuff I'm talking
about
the original will and Holly
at least like a graphic novel or
something like one story you know I just
uh I think it'd be kind of unique and
fun would you really try to spin it so
it's more I don't know horror or or
realism econ or you're just gonna
embrace the fact of when it was made and
be like this is this is the style I'm
going for it
well I've seen some interviews with the
the uh well and actually I was sitting
beside the one of the guys who
originally wrote the show back in the
day and uh they really wrote the show
they didn't write it for kids it was a
kid's show but it was written for adults
yeah it was written for adults it just
happened to be a kids show so I think
that's what I like about it you know I
had these themes in it just happened to
be a kid's show wait a minute wasn't a
part of Southern Marty Croft or my my
thing or something oh okay all right
that's weird yeah okay yeah but yeah
that turn I could see as a show nowadays
like if you kept that tone you can make
it a little bit darker Like a Stranger
Things Vibe a little bit maybe
oh that would be oh that would be unreal
just with the lighting and the sound and
just production value going okay this is
where we're going with it now yes if you
were to take over would you modernize
the characters or we keep them from the
same time period as the 70s Show I the
nature of the shows I think you could do
any time period you could keep those 70s
characters and still bring in somebody
from like the 2050
it's sad that I'm like sitting here
going imagine if you actually just film
those with the original scripts except
you just put all the production design
all the direction and all that kind of
stuff and yeah you might have to tweak
some of the the script at least more
dialogue whatever
that would be insane but then I'll just
do it in a comic for him and it's like
ah
yeah I want this that's you know when
people complain about the the classic
Doctor Who stuff like oh I can't watch
it because of X Y and Z I was like there
are stories there that will go Toe to
Toe with any modern stuff yeah if it
does have modern Graphics if you know
like genesis of the Daleks or something
like you know there's so many great
stories there uh but doing like modern
Graphics I think we just it would be Toe
to Toe with any of the new Who stuff I
would love to see the talons of Wang
chayang brought up the speed I just want
to see how they do Mr sin and if they
bring Roy Rory deep back to play him
that would be that would just be the
bomb out there
um Melanie it's up to you I got some uh
questions in the chats or gently good I
was gonna say Nick I haven't heard your
voice yet yeah let's back up a little
bit you're uh telling us that you were
reading comics when you were a kid
is there one or a particular ones that
kind of stuck in your head that maybe
inspired you a bit I know
um the comics I read as a kid certain
ones have stuck with me years and years
later yes how about you
yes absolutely
um yeah the one that really got me into
comic books is well so I was on a road
trip with my my grandparents my mom we
we started in North Carolina and drove
South out to California like we took two
weeks a month on trip went out to LA
then came back in Northern route and we
stopped at Yellowstone National Park and
again this was like 82 MTV I'm in the
middle of MTV I need my Motley Crew or
my Aussie or something you know and I
get to this uh The Lodge at the
Yellowstone and they had nothing they
had no TVs no nothing I was like oh my
gosh
it went down to the gift store and they
had a couple of comic books down there I
remember I was I got two of them I don't
remember what the second one was but the
one that picked up was a Chrysler number
seven or eight six maybe seven and it
had Nightcrawler from the X-Men
oh what what what is this you know I
started reading I was like okay
interesting oh this this guy's part of a
team what are these things and
everything so came back home found now
there's a comic book store in my local
town and uh I was like okay X-Men I get
it all right and so that's kind of those
first couple issues with X-Men really
kind of pulled me in and I mean I just
read so many great books over the years
I just uh I was going to this comic book
story a dark night came out when I was
like just kind of first year or two get
into Comics I'm like and I didn't
understand that was like the first
Batman books I'd ever read you know so I
mean I kind of started at the end of the
story like well what's this Batman and
and I think around that same time too
his Watchman came out much too
sophisticated for myself of that age 13
14 I was like I don't you know I mean I
get it now but it's still it's still I
knew it was something special at the
time it was just took me years to
realize how special it was
yeah so things like that it's still
above you it's kind of like doctor who
works it's slightly above your head but
not too far off that you kind of get
what's going on but you're like uh this
is a little smarter than I am right yeah
so what was your Gateway in the Doctor
Who and then we'll get to the chats and
I know a lot of people are putting up
the chance what was your gateway of the
doctor who brought you it which my
Gateway well my Gateway was the local
PBS station now Chapel Hill North
Carolina and the fact that we only had
three channels well four if you actually
include PBS we had four channels
um I was actually the human remote
control for my father so
get up and turn it turn the channel
my dad was growing up he said the only
reason why we had you is because he
hadn't built remote controls yet
wow look at and hold antenna up right
exactly yeah
um I don't mind showing my age I really
don't care we all have when we're born
right when I was your age we only had
three TV channels yeah for some reason
we had 20 we had 20 Channel Changers
only six three six
when the storm would hit and you had an
antenna
sorry that's what it is right
it is what it is now we can get on the
phone and and look at a million things
in two seconds it's crazy it's crazy but
my gateway to Doctor Who
Um so I was flipping my dad slipped away
and I started flipping around the
channels and I get to PBS and there's
this giant robot walking over a village
what the heck is this I don't I wanna
what what what is this and so then I
started trying to figure out what I was
like it was interesting enough again
kind of like Star Wars is out Battlestar
Galactica so it kind of felt in that
range of stuff I was like well I want to
find out more about this again no
internet no such thing as the Doctor Who
magazine in my area at that time I
didn't know what it was and I think I
just tried to tune in the next time to
see what it was or try the next night
and I start figuring out like oh okay so
they're airing this so yeah Tom Baker
robot that was kind of my I think the
fourth issue with our first fourth
episode would have been like the first
thing I saw so I just was pulled in from
there yep yeah full disclosure I've told
people I said I said I don't I don't
remember when I got it so I always said
Robot because I couldn't explain it
right I'm sure it was another episode
but robot I just like I'm making my life
easier I'm just saying robot out there
yeah yeah I get it so I'm a long time
hoovian since the late 70s early 80s did
you want to take the chance or did you
oh I'm gonna take this one because he
can go straight to um hell uh Andrew
Morris says was your TV black and white
and steam
yeah I think there's a spot on the back
of the TV we're able to shovel coal into
the back of the TV to get it to run it
was somewhere on because you remember
how they were all
cabinets basically they were their own
pieces of furniture yeah it's now had
the rabbit antennas yeah yeah there you
go
[Laughter]
and you had to tap them every now and
then just to make it I don't even know I
couldn't even explain the science behind
that I was like what
so I'm trying to click on one it's not
sure it's another Andrew one so I'm
uh who are your favorite comic book
artists and writers ah okay uh well RSL
jumped in uh
uh Olivier Martine is probably one of my
most favorite he's a French artist I've
actually got to work with him a couple
times over the years he did a variant
cover for my Creator own book Amber
Adams the kickstarter we can talk about
later but uh I've been a long time
Olivier fan
um and through him I've discovered all
these amazing French artists like Claire
Wendling and DBA closet game and just
just phenomenal artists um but more
American artists uh Dave Stevens
creator of The Rocketeer Al Williamson
he did a lot of the um gosh he did he
did a lot of Flash Gordon throughout the
years but he was probably I don't say
best known because he's known for so
many great things but he did the
adaptation of Empire Strikes Back for
Marvel Comics just amazing beautiful
work
um and art Adams as well so I mean so I
could just keep going on and on I just
love artists love artists you know
um writers you know I'm all over the
place of writers that's
I don't say I necessarily follow a
certain writer but I know to like I know
when I read it I know that I like it
[Music]
um
so
yeah I think it is yeah good nope that's
good no I get that because that's what
gets you into a certain or take this off
real quick that's when when you're
reading certain series
um you'll notice that that they'll keep
the same writers on and that that'll
keep you into that if you're what if
you're reading that particular X-Men Arc
or you're running this Arc you'll you'll
kind of learn which arcs you like and
you're like oh now I remember which
writers are so so I get that the the
finding that that particular person's
voice that sings to you
Brian came on I really enjoy his work
yes yes I mean Saga paper girls yeah I
just started getting into Saga yeah yeah
so he's he's still interests me like oh
my gosh what's this guy gonna throw at
us now you know what I mean he's one of
those ones so
so Mark Robinson has a good question
um Kelly you said that you use Photoshop
what do you think of the new beta
feature uh the generator filter the AI
masking tools uh will it help you or
hinder you
well you know I'm also a graphic
designer outside of comic books
um and I'm I'm kind of I don't want to
get too much in the discussion of AI
just in the sense of like sometimes I
get it it's the future it's a tool or
sometimes I get angry about it sometimes
I'm like I get it it's going to be here
we're going to use it so we there's
that's a whole nother discussion you
know about that
um I will say that I have played around
with it and it's uh it's pretty
impressive uh you know there's there's
it works really well in some cases other
cases it doesn't you know I was messing
around trying to put a lighthouse on a
mountain and it just never quite it gave
you three options it's like okay yeah
but you still got to go in and
manipulate it yeah try to put a boat on
water uh you know hit or miss and
everything however like hey I want to
put snow in the ground you Circle a spot
and say Bill snow it mimics it does that
content aware I feel you know sand or if
it's a photo shot like a a studio shot
of a model in the background you need to
extend out
I mean you do it like that so there are
definitely workflows where it is amazing
here it's not going to going away
um and we're just gonna have to figure
out how to integrate that and use it and
you know and also to give Fair usage to
to artists that it that it has scraped
data from and everything however we got
to figure that out as a society because
it's you know it's not just a I can be
an artist now
you're basically speaking everything
that I've I've so and it's easy
something when it's when a question
where you're asking that to an artist
you can I know personally I can easily
get on a soapbox and I can easily say as
somebody who's had their art scraped
because I went on the website and
checked yeah
um but anyway well I do agree that okay
well I was gonna say the other thing
though that really actually concerns me
more about AI than the scraping week
that's on the thing that actually
concerns me is actually it's a society
does that doesn't understand AI or no
like oh that's a cute penguin or this or
whatever photo it's like they have no
idea of what it is and that scares me
like they don't unders they don't
understand that technology is out there
you know and just the way it can be used
for good or for evil so no but I I do
agree with you that it's it it is it's
here to stay and I do agree that it's
one heck of a tool because I've utilized
a little bit of the content generation
for fixing images and I know some people
like though they did a tick tock and
they're like oh see look oh I'm out of a
job and I'm going not that that those
bricks don't match up that doesn't match
up why are there more lights you could
use it as a tool to go oh I could be
more efficient now and not sit there
with a rubber stamp and have to redraw
everything in this wedding photo yes so
yeah
but
to your point it's it's we'll we'll see
if people use it for good or for evil
yes
um if you want to ever have a laugh
uh I was to give it a kind of give him a
plug
um one of the channels I watch on
YouTube a lot is weird history and they
just a couple days ago did one where
it's on Gregor McGregor so if you want a
good laugh go search for it
it has so much AI generated pictures and
it's 13 minutes my husband and I just
stopped and kept pausing it because
there was hands missing there was a man
that was right there was two men best
one is at two to eleven because I
remember it it's one horse two generals
they're on the same horse because
apparently now it's a Dachshund and the
ladder General has two left legs but
they produced it so okay
um Dave
got a question for our amazing guys I
think we got a commercial break oh do we
have a commercial break we do well we
return we're gonna continue
um to oh I just got in
AI of uh Kelly there you go
when we return we're gonna to more
discussion with Kelly Yates we're gonna
go over our birthdays and we'll discuss
which convention he's going to be going
to at the end of this week when we
return please continue to stay logged on
tune in become part of the legend we'll
be right back

if you go to the Facebook page we took a
little trip over to Universal Studios
and of course the 11th doctor made a
special trip back to see Maryland and
there were quite a few pictures over
there as well as thousands of pictures
of the traveling Tardis but we're here
for Mr uh Kelly Yates out there here
Melanie take it away
well I was gonna ask Dave if yes so
we've got
we've kind of circled around yes you've
done all the doctor what else have you
done tell us more about the Doctor Who
tell us more about what you've done I
mean we can see in the background here
we you know we got some doctors here we
you know I got some pictures
tell us what tell us what you've done
tell us if you can what you're gonna do
and maybe what you'd like what's going
on over here
gosh I've worked on so many things for
Doctor Who it's amazing uh you know uh
comic books t-shirts toys everything
else in between so uh gosh
huh I was gonna say you want me to uh
let me switch places with this so
everybody can see you
um oh wow I got some pictures to show
everybody Kelly if you would like me to
run down a few do you want to uh
well you know what if you may jump back
we can also talk about how I got into
working on Doctor Who comics you want to
do the slideshow with the art yeah we'll
do the shy show as well so yeah but yeah
so um I said long time hoovian
um you know the new who starts to come
out IDW Comics it acquired the rights
um and they started putting books out
and I I was doing going to San Diego
Comic Con almost every year again doing
the portfolio reviews and all this
um so I was out there
and uh I want to kind of take my
portfolio to IDW to maybe maybe I get
some Doctor Who work uh just so happens
a previous Studio made of mine a guy
named Robert Atkins was drawing GI Joe
for IDW at the time I was like Robert
were you were you like please take me
over like introduce me to the editor he
goes yeah yeah man I'll take you come on
over and everything uh so we go and uh
he introduced me to the editor uh Denton
Tipton uh and he was looking through my
portfolio against Kelly you know I like
your stuff but you know we're booked up
for the next year you know there's
nothing I can give you I was like I
don't care longtime movie and I'll wait
because it's going to be a year I don't
care pin up a cover a short story
whatever I just want to work on Doctor
Who one time just to say I did Doctor
Who because okay it's gonna be a year
good I'll Circle back with you
um a month after San Diego I get an
email says knock knock opportunity and
they had just a uh one of the artists
was not able to come through on a
project and they asked me to step into
how help out and that's how I got my
foot in the door
um so 2008 so I've been working on
Doctor Who now what 15 years wow wow
that's insane I know oh so be nice and
having the talent to back it up you know
it's paid off for me so but I did you
know so I did a smattering stuff for IDW
I did some short stories I did a like an
annual for them I did a couple issues
with the 11th doctor I'm gonna forget
some things I did a one shot
gosh just issues four and six of the
Forgotten there's more I did in there
but that's where I started home my doing
cover skills and everything I was like
can I do a cover and they kind of start
letting me do that process
um so I had a great great time working
with IDW but then at San Diego again
literally somebody goes so what do you I
got a message somebody sent me like what
do you think about IDW losing the
license to to Doctor Who I'm like I
don't know what you're talking about
like what what do you mean so this was
around the 50th anniversary and the BBC
decided they wanted to kind of shop
around Doctor Who again maybe bring it
back instead of a U.S company publishing
uh Doctor Who comics maybe a British
company would like to publish uh Doctor
Who comics
um and so it was kind of trying to
figure out because it was rumored like
boom was going to get it it was rumor
that Dark Horse was going to get oh even
Marvel was going to get it so everybody
was at that show trying to figure out
who the license was going to end up with
I think we found out like a month later
that it was ended up being Titan
it just so happens that that show uh I'd
gone by Titan and introduced myself not
knowing that they were gonna get the
license and I happened to show my poor
plays like introduce myself to this guy
named Andrew Sumner he's the VP of
entertainment and I didn't know quite
who he was I didn't I wasn't like
targeting him like I'm gonna go show my
stuff to this guy he just happened to be
there
said hey can I show you my portfolio
he's like sure mate and people because I
love it he goes we need to stay in touch
with you so I kind of had a inkling that
something might be going on so but
that's kind of and then of course so I
started working and getting in uh with
Titan doing stuff for them yeah and I
think it's really it's really neat
hearing more stories like this about San
Diego Comic-Con and knowing that it's
not just about purchasing all the fun
toys and all that because I'll be honest
I'm right there trying to get into the
Hasbro Booth but there is so much more
going on from the comic creators the
comic the artists and the portfolio
reviews and the connections and all that
kind of stuff that isn't at another
fandom driven kind of con that there is
that there is a lot of Industry stuff
happening at that particular con but
look I I get the criticism people give
it yeah I went I started going to San
Diego and it's like a mere 40 000 people
in the mid 90s and now it's you know
whatever 253 whatever the number is now
it's a massive show yeah and I get why
people call it corporate con I get that
but those people who hire you that work
at corporations to give you jobs they're
there yeah that's where you meet them
you know so that's what it is no I I'm
I've done the portfolio review and I've
I've and I've gotten better from it
because I've I've lucked out where I've
they've lottoed me and I get in there
but like the big thing I like I like I
tend to tend other tell other people is
don't go in there thinking that you're
the best person in the world go in there
with a portfolio and tell them make me
better
you want those critiques because you
want to be better and they people have
picked that absolutely
Melanie I got some questions in the chat
I want to know these questions in the
chat you've got it here's uh Andrew
Boris again have you ever tried
animating your comics
[Music]
no it's hard enough to get one panel out
on me I don't know
[Laughter]
would I love to see myself and now you
want me to make a flip book
I mean that's that's a talent and a
skill
it's amazing no I I haven't though but
but I'd love to see my stuff animated
yeah absolutely gotcha Eric I just says
I look forward to seeing you at Heroes
con next week yes
oh wow yes speaking of which let me go
ahead and uh show everybody where you're
going to be going uh this weekend and we
will be there too uh concast
this weekend June 10th and the 11th
you'll see Nick and Kelly there uh it's
the Holiday Inn Research Park in
Mid-City District Huntsville Alabama the
link is there but I'll go ahead and put
in the chat in just a few seconds for
Comcast
stabbers.net to get your tickets there
uh and uh Kelly will be there I think uh
uh John Barrowman will be there and
quite a few other guests will be there
but more importantly all the whovians
will be there
for the last supposed run of
concastavors so hopefully hey Bonnie hey
concave
[Laughter]
we had Bonnie and Matthew on
yes
I've lost Tommy why me
um she was nothing but just
complimentary of you and all and how
like you're you're her like favorite
person to be at the con and that it's
you know that it it's not concave
without Kelly I bring the fun what can I
say
no no they're great everybody down there
just the community she's built around
that show and uh has really been in fun
it's been fun to be a part of it and
it's just really impressive to see what
they've done with that so it it probably
is the last one I won't speak for but I
hate that it is the last one but I get
it but man to finish such a high note
with getting John Barrowman I uh I know
she's one of that for years and so
that's uh definitely a feather in the
cap for sure
that's a uh the uh the the showrunner
privilege is just like yeah I want this
person this is okay for anybody else I'm
this for me
I was gonna say is I do have one
question regarding Doctor Who and uh
when it comes to drawing likenesses is
there a specific doctor that you just
had a little more of a hard time where
you're when you're doing it you're like
she's not right
oh that's just not right
yeah yeah well that's the power of
command Z yep
um you know there's certain things fine
and cool
from uh their likenesses like if you're
drawing Matt Smith the hair I mean the
hair is the like 90 of it the arch the
eyes people say he doesn't hide eyebrows
he does they're just light and they
start about halfway of where a normal
person when I say a normal eyebrows
start so you got to kind of start them a
little bit more but there's also one
thing I really found out when I don't
draw it on there it looks weird he has
this crease
right on the middle of his of his
forehead and if you don't put it there
it looks weird it looks like oh and you
put it in it's like oh it's Matt Smith
oh wow it's not what it said it's like
I'm putting my finger over the monitor
again
I'll keep walking around saying to Matt
Smith the chin and the crease yes
you find the things to pull out that
makes it the you know you don't have to
be photo realistic with them it's just
finding that balance like what pieces or
elements that really Define their
personality David Tennant the arching
eyebrow you know I mean that's you see
that oh that's David even if the drawing
is off a little bit or whatever you know
so this was actually a fun project to
work on so the BBC reached out to me and
they were doing exclusive DVD collection
of the animated
episodes and uh they want me to
illustrate the the cover for so I gave
them a couple options and they like so
many of them they actually used one on
the back cover as well so that was that
was really cool to kind of uh have my
art on a DVD cover at Walmart
so yeah I would pay real money for that
to be a big finish audio right now
yeah those three together
there was supposed to be I think I was a
doomsday there's supposed to be an
episode with the second and the Ninth
Doctor it's like gone that's just that's
just something bad for him to happen out
there
um so we got your uh pictures up over
here so I'll just cycle through a few
sure yeah yeah this was actually a
t-shirt design I did a couple years ago
for the 13th Doctor and just kind of you
know uh I've done so many of them which
is I'm so I feel so blessed I've been
able to be a part of this universe you
know the businesses are incredible
sandbox
we got
this one was great it was like it was a
weird wall so they told me like this was
an exclusive cover for Hastings like
well we kind of want to take the 11th
doctor maybe put some things with them
but let's see and I was like well let's
let's try this
um and I actually had to lay out my my
doctor who figures so I could pull out
there were so many pieces I had to pull
out elements like oh I got to include
the cane I gotta include this so I had
to kind of do it for myself to kind of
keep things straight you know but um the
editors like because Kelly I don't know
if they're going to go for this because
this was especially a time when the
doctor they weren't doing a lot of
mixing of doctors you know they weren't
trying to blip things they were still
trying to keep things over the ninth
doctor's 9th 10th they were trying to
and they weren't really alluding to the
classic stuff so much at that point so
um there's like we're warning you
they're probably not going to approve it
you know I was like I said that's fine
no problem let's just see what they say
he sent it five minutes later they
approved it they love it it's their
favorite go ahead so but it was so great
because it was where's Waldo type of
thing because we got posted everybody
started like well hold on wait that's
the eighth you know vest and that's the
sixth Jack and they started kind of
going through the whole process of kind
of like a where Waldo uh piece with it
so that was really fun
real money to see Karen Gillen and the
sixth doctor's outfits man
yeah and you see like the scarf too I
mean the scarf is not that long but it's
such a great design element you know you
can make it a thousand feet long it's
just so fun to play with
ladies and gentlemen we're just gonna
pause right here for just a second
because we're going to end the audio
portion of our show real fast and we'll
continue with Kelly and we've got a few
more pictures to show out there but for

some I don't know so me so Andrew I
think dovetailing to before what you
were saying before is which which doctor
is your favorite to draw
favorite straw
s there's so many things Tom Baker's
tough to draw just all that curly hair
you got to nail it or you miss it you
know but uh he's hard to draw sometimes
but you know Peter Capaldi's really fun
to draw you know just like the kind of
Stern face and the the crazy hair I just
said there's something about him I
really like drawing is there a villain
that you like to draw more than else
because I just look at the Daleks going
Mathematica I'm like this has got to
take a tool everybody's like in a sketch
uh Daleks no no they're the most they're
actually very boring actually you know I
mean they're just like
yeah yeah you know I mean there's
they're very mechanical you know and uh
yeah they're they're tough they're tough
um my favorite favorite
I don't have to have a favorite to draw
nah I noticed this picture
The Fugitive The Fugitive doctor Joe
Martin that's right yeah that was really
it's it's really fun I mean I just I've
done this whole series of doctors in
front of the TARDIS you know I think the
only one I haven't done it's just it's
not a lack of wanting to it's just a
lack of time because I'm a very busy
person we're all busy lives but I stay
pretty busy with my art schedule but I
want to Circle back and do the first
doctor and uh the the 11th doctor
actually in the in front of the TARDIS
like this said a series uh I guess I'll
have to do now the 14th one and of
course the 15th okay that actually is or
isn't I don't I don't know yet but are
you slated to do anything with the 14th
doctor
I am
up to here non-disclosure agreements
yes I uh I I might be working on some
14th doctor stuff very cool yeah nothing
nothing I can announce but you might see
in the next couple of weeks before San
Diego okay it's only up to here
so the state staying within your
non-disco your ndas
I can I know that I mean if someone's
telling you okay draw Joe draw the 14th
you know not 14 sorry draw you know all
these other doctors you can go on the
internet and you have a wealth of
reference material are you can are you
allowed to ask for reference material or
is it something kind of that you you're
given maybe one or two and then you're
looking at the actor for other
references or you just like ah I got
this what Melanie what are you even
asking me for so yeah so yes so once
you've signed your life away and all
these documents and and everything I
actually worked with the BBC and
provided uh an art file so I see not
everything but I see enough to give me
the word give me enough information to
get my work done okay yeah so I have
seen things how about that nope that's
cool because I was just trying to try
different art
that I know some people really lean to
needing references others can just I got
it we're good well let's just take the
14th doctor for example there's so much
like you can see stuff on the internet
like the pictures we've all seen leaked
and everything for those who've looked
but it really is hard to get details and
like that so they share yeah I'm not on
the inner circle with the BBC but I'm
definitely on a layer of the circle
where I get enough information to get my
job done you know like like the tie like
you know there's things that are
important like the Plaid the plaids that
are in the suit the 14th doctor suit
there's things you just can't really see
um in those uh sneak peek photos so well
so I do have access to a certain certain
uh reference reference images
I'm looking at the Kawaii doctors and
I'm just like every doctor is looking at
me like I've done something wrong but
they want me to say that I did something
wrong
can you tell us more about how the
Kawaii doctors started and how you honed
this particular style to to make them
cutesy yeah well isn't it crazy I mean
like I have a toy line based off my
artwork you know or my plate
because I saw them at San Diego
Comic-Con I was like those are those are
adorable and then of course I and
they're in mystery packs so you had to
buy them and hope that you were getting
them and then if you're at the Titan
booth and you were very very kind and
nice you could do a Mystery Pack and
then open another one up and they'll
trade it so oh I did Bunnings here but
um you gotta sign up for uh stream yard
my dear but or you gotta allow um stream
yard to find the uh someone said thank
you for all the nice things you said
about them
so yeah so we remind everybody uh this
weekend
uh Kelly will be at concast just in case
it is dot net tickets and info are
available tickets are still available
now and uh you can check out uh John
Barrowman and all the guests that will
be out there and you're gonna be with a
bunch of movies for the last ride of
Comcast address uh by Bonnie and Matthew
and hopefully maybe there'll be a
regeneration there uh Andrew Morris did
pop up a question says have you done the
Cushing doctor no I haven't done
anything that's a good question uh no
nothing
weirdly enough I love the Peter Cushing
doctor well then
yeah because that's the only yeah
because it's it's it's one of those I
mean I understand why eight is sometimes
in thing sometimes isn't because hello
Fox and then
all that kind of stuff but then
Cushing's just that
is he a doctor is he not he's not
canonical to the the number line but eh
it is what it is and speaking of John
Barrowman
hey got some Torchwood going though yeah
that was a fun cover to do so that was
one so
there's another one I did like ice
Maiden uh that was well these are all
covers for the Torchwood comic books
um I don't remember remember this one
but there was a series that he wrote
with his sister so him and his sister
wrote uh a series of Torchwood comic
books and a couple of these I think were
for for those books
um but so but yeah uh so we're talking
about the figures right back the figures
or Torchwood which one figures figures
figures I like how this one has your
grumpy face
yeah he's got he's got wrinkles up there
too but he has I saw that I was just
staring at it going now I see what you
mean so how this started was so I mean
when you look at my artwork you don't
see like this torch with that's not this
is the style I draw in this is my normal
natural how I draw things so the cute
little quiet you know that's not how I
normally draw but I'm a graphic designer
as well so it's in my realm of work and
I've done figure designs before for
other things well what happened is is uh
I get a call from Andrew Sumner a Titan
and then like mate we have a meeting at
Hot Topic tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock
and we need to we want to show them like
the 10th doctor in this cute little koi
style in front of a tardis can you work
us something up by tomorrow morning so
this is like eight o'clock at night so I
was like figured knocked it out pretty
quick within a couple hours sent it off
to them they had the meeting Hot Topic
loved it they made a shirt out of it uh
well it sold so well they wanted to do
some more doctor so we did like a
version like all the doctors on these
little koi style figures of all the
doctors on it
um and it sold out we did another one
with some of the doctors in this style
sold out
will then tighten they were so
successful Titan approaching like hey we
think we want to maybe design some toys
based off of these t-shirt designs and
so we had to yeah that was another one
right
the vortex
yeah
um and so yeah so really I started we
start figuring out like what the body
shapes would be so really from the
ground Foundation up working with Titan
figure out what these are going to look
like
um and just kind of honing the style
down and so they came out and they were
extremely successful
um and from that as well I've designed
uh four four waves in my hero Academia
in this style is based the anime
um gosh love other things I don't know
if they'll ever get produced but
um uh Cowboy Bebop fire force so many of
these anime shows so uh yeah yeah so
it's pretty cool but if you look
actually on the I don't have a box
around me but if you look on the bottom
of the Box they branded with my name
designed by Kelly Yates I mean they
don't have to do that they don't have to
do that so
um if I have a box yeah and most of the
teachers I don't know if all the
teachers most of them they have my name
in there my brand name Kelly Yates I
mean Titan and the BBC don't have to do
that so maybe that one has it let's
start looking now
ah it does
look at that I mean wait a minute wait a
minute let me get let me uh let's get
there we go right right there right I
mean they they don't have to do that but
it's such a great relationship with them
you know I appreciate it that they do
that so it's uh yeah it's awesome
I put you back Dave stop no it's not me
I'm producing the air I got you
um and I do have a question just in case
some people may not be familiar with
this particular comic uh amber Adams
tell us a little about that for people
who may just not be familiar with them
you know as much as much as much as much
as I love working on Doctor Who stuff
this is my creator of a book Amber Adams
kind of like basically a female Flash
Gordon high adventure Space Opera type
stuff
um when somebody brings these books up
to get signed I just was like oh it
makes me feel so giddy I'm like so
thankful that they did that but I
originally put out four issues through
Image Comics and then I wrote and
Illustrated this series uh back in 2008
and unfortunately it could not have come
out at a worse time like it literally
was listening like December 2008 coming
out in February 2009 well for those that
remember the Great Recession happened
then and it decimated comic book stores
so I mean even Spider-Man that was
selling millions of copies comic stores
are only ordering 300 000 copies of
Spider-Man so that tells you the type of
Market that it could have came out in so
they were hoping for originally about 16
000 copies to be sold but it came in
lower but it it did well I got four
issues out
um and I never got to collect into a
trade paperback so what I did is I ran a
Kickstarter that just ended a couple
months ago collecting the first four
issues into a trade paperback for the
very first time there's a pinup gallery
of uh you know illustrations by some of
my friends uh in a very cover by Olivia
vatin like I was saying earlier and also
create a brand new seven page story that
I wrote Illustrated and colored myself
so that was one of those ones because
you know this is some of the older
artwork which I'm extremely proud of but
you know you grow you hopefully grow
within those years and so I wanted to
kind of show that like you know no this
is my newer style
um and I just want to do something that
was exclusive
um to the book so and yes it's uh the
kickstarter's ended successfully funded
over eight thousand dollars and funded
in the first four days which is really
exciting and just I'm so thankful for
the support
and uh yeah see there's a little look
what I've done Doctor Who
oh I don't think I didn't don't think I
didn't see it
yeah Luna's here sorry down okay
anytime one of our cats come on on our
screen we have to put up the traveling
charges catalog so she's here sorry if
I'd known that I would open my door I
would have left my it's okay
um
so that is the website for the
kickstarter you can go to Kelly Yates
art
.com yeah but yeah I'm going to
Kickstarter and uh search for Amber
Adams there's a pre-order link on there
interesting fact believe it or not so
when this originally came out
um I was contacted by a producer uh from
The Hitman movies and they were
interested in developing into a movie
and they were trying to attach Miley
Cyrus because she had just come off of
Hannah Montana and was looking for a
female sci-fi thing to do so it was you
know obviously it didn't happen and it's
so extremely difficult but it was fun
for about six months just kind of you
know
dreaming and hoping and talking about
yeah so yeah
but no it's it it's it you you did it
you me you you got it you were able to
reach your goal and it's it's awesome
that you're able to now again people go
on to kickstarter.com when you go to the
projects you could search for Adam Amber
Adams and that you can find it here and
you can pre-order
isn't it amazing it blows my mind you
can you can create something in your
mind
create it and put it out into the world
you know yeah
right okay I'll stop sharing I have a
pleasant surprise and I forgot that I
had these
um moving around Ken Spivey used to run
time lord Fest down here in Tampa
Orlando and then Central Florida area as
a gift he gave me these and I was like
wait a minute really it's like can't be
right so let me go ahead and I'm gonna
flake my head for a little bit but I
think these are yours sir oh yes yes I
did the first time that series
yeah top left his name his name's right
there
the covers on those phenomenal guy I
mean Mark Buckingham's awesome
[Music]
cursed this glare yes yes that was a
fairy tale line
and
there was another one he gave me
and I was just looking at it there
and this is a fairy tale life as well
what are you doing to Amy
poor girl what the heck's going on there
it's all in the story it's all right
you're gonna have to break the seal and
go let's read it I know it's well it's
one of those it's like no
kid gave these to me a while back I was
just like oh well thank you and I never
bothered to open them because it was
like well you know what those those it
meant something now that he's gone
that's just like yeah I don't want to
know if I want to open those with the
latest run of when I say latest I mean
it's been quite a few years now it's
just kovitz kind of thrown my brain off
with with how many years we've lost
um Titan had introduced reintroduced uh
the eighth doctor in Iran uh 9 10 11
blah blah blah
um but more more so the later ones and
each of them had a new companion did you
have a hand in designing those
companions or did the writer tell you
this is how we want to do the companion
and then you played with that or yeah
actually uh I was involved in other
things so I was not able to work on that
those series at that time and everything
so I wish I could have because they
looked really I enjoyed reading all of
them they're really fun to read so I
wasn't sure if you were had a pardon in
those particular comments because for a
while I know Titan was just going crazy
with Doctor Who and that's the problem I
can't be involved in everything you know
I say like I said I stay so busy but I
really appreciate the work that they put
into this because they really are
fantastic so
foreign
that same kind of period
um that you know what Chris Jones worked
on and who wrote it was a cat was it
Captain Scott was it I can't remember it
might have been my yeah it might have
been only because I've noticed as as of
late Heats on Star Wars High Republic
world like because also like wait a
minute wait okay Star Wars High Republic
novels comic books oh yeah yeah no I'm
so I I'm the type of person that's a
cheerleader for other creators like man
awesome I'm so so happy that you're
having that success
just love seeing it yeah
no question we do I'll bring these up
for you I I wasn't sure why did you get
the marks and Andrews on big finish on
all that
uh no okay I'll go back uh do you listen
to Big finish and is there any story
from big if you do is there any story
from Big finish that you would like a
turn like to turn into a comic so the
big finish is amazing I mean it's just
like there's so it's such a huge catalog
as we know and it's like I I can't I
don't even know where to start you know
I'm just like where are you
so but I've listened to I think one of
the ones that really stuck out to me is
uh what was the the end of light was it
the 50th Anniversary was yeah and the
end of life
at the end light at the end
yep yep
um
um so that one I've listened to some of
the David Tennant ones a lot of the Tom
Baker ones but not all of them I don't I
think that end of the light uh light end
kind of really was one of those it stuck
with me a little bit more than some of
the other stuff
um
uh but I gotta say those like when I
think about it I actually Illustrated uh
the last issue of prisoners of time it
was the 50th anniversary with like all
the doctors and all the Companions and I
even stuck in Peter Capaldi they just
announced him at the doctor you see his
head in the back on the last page uh
because we didn't know what his costume
looked like at the time uh but yeah so
that yeah so the big like multi-story
thing but I don't know I mean light at
the end I guess I don't know there's so
much
about where to start with big Finish
Well there here we go we're actually
doing a panel about spin-offs uh for
this weekend what spin-off would you
want to
uh
write a comic about if you had your
choice everything in the universe Jenny
the powder Noster gang
uh Diego and leifa where would would you
one be the one that goes that's the one
I'm gonna grab and and run with
and doesn't have to be big finish but uh
what about anybody else anybody
there's nothing you just looked at
Doctor Who and said you know what that
person or those group of people deserve
a spin-off
thing there's so many great ones right I
mean I mean there's so many and I think
I think a lot of them just live in the
TV world so much better because they did
they did a um Master Series the the
Missy series that Titan put out I think
it was last year the year before I think
so it was like kind of like the the
multi-doctor storyline it's kind of like
the multi-master story so it was pretty
interesting so I thought that was kind
of I wasn't involved in it but still
being a fan I really enjoyed the premise
and where they went with it in the art
it was all really top-notch I can't
remember the name I think it was just
Missy Comics or something like that so
that was a good one to check out
um I will say so stepping outside a
doctor who one thing I've always been
interested in was Star Wars I would love
love I've always loved this character
um lady Vader
um
no you just got to see Melanie's face
sorry yeah I just I would love I would
love to do like a lady Vader
is this character again that was
introduced in the the classic uh Marvel
Run and that's just come you can do you
could do a series about that miniseries
or something I think there's enough
around that yeah that would be amazing
because honestly because that was
because that was going to be the
question I was gonna throw out there for
Star Wars is like if you could write
anything what era of Star Wars would you
want to go to and I see that you're
going lady Vader for more of an
alternative alternate universe kind of
deal but is there a specific error that
you're like
I actually pitched it to Randy stradley
the head guy at dark dark horse years
ago I was out San Diego again San Diego
so I did this illustration of her and
um you know kind of kind of gave him a
loose outline and he really liked it
because that's really great I would love
it he goes nobody will buy it
how dare well let's be fair I mean there
wasn't really a lot of Star Wars coming
out when I was pitching that you know
we're not in this new uh-oh cat sorry
so no hard feelings other than you know
just I wanted to have something
published but it was I get it I
completely get it so but I tried you did
try
now it's like every there's so much of
every era that they're going for whether
or not you want to go Galactic Republic
High Republic Old Republic this Republic
what is this Empire post Empire
yeah the people that want to ignore
people that don't want to or whatever
yes it's a lot to keep up with
almost like big finish I don't know so I
was about to say almost like this was
like great
it's just like somebody will ask me it's
like where do you start with big finish
I'm like good luck
it's the same thing like asking where
somebody says where do you start with
Doctor Who I'm like oh God right right
you know actually when I add you know my
answer to that is kind of recently I
used to kind of recommend blink but I
was like you know really that's such a
great episode but doctors the doctor's
not really in it it doesn't really so
always kind of like telling people you
watch new who I always say the 11th Hour
just because you get a good flavor of
what Doctor Who is you get the idea that
there's other doctors I feel like it's a
really kind of a will if you were to
introduce somebody for the first time I
feel like that's a good episode
so
usually uh well I mean we had a couple
episodes so we called the the Doctor Who
starter kit where we come up with ideas
but usually I try to pair it off with
something that they like so if they like
mystery I'll find you know the Mystery
episodes like blink or
um
uh was it a high did they like uh like
horror or things like that I tried to
Max it up but usually in the starter kit
for me it's uh Vincent and the doctor
because it's the best of everything out
there I mean yeah I was just like oh you
like Titanic yeah let me give you
Vincent the doctor I'll give you five
minutes and a box of tissues before it's
all over oh yeah no that's a really good
point like a starter kit like watch
these three episodes right find the
flavor yeah absolutely and you usually
try to mix up the doctors too so that
they get a different flavor you get
tenant or you get Eccles Center you get
uh Whitaker or you get uh Capaldi so let
me ask everybody here a question what do
you think about the Disney plus thing
the distribution through Disney Plus
I don't know
okay I'm cautiously optimistic yeah
I think you could go horribly horribly
wrong but the odd well like it could go
horribly horribly right
are pretty significant as well well for
me they're just distribution right now I
don't know if they have any artistic say
I know that's all RTD
so I don't know if they're just buying
more IP because that's what I did he was
grabbing Star Wars and in a lucasfilm
and and Marvel and he was just grabbing
IP before covet happened I think maybe
Doctor Who was in there now before
everything came down people were
wondering whether Doctor Who was going
to survive the BBC because Unfortunately
they had lost their licensing fee they
mean that they lost being a law that you
had to pay for this fee now people are
getting out of that by some act so
usually sci-fi is the first one to get
the ax because that's usually you know
dramas are easy to put out there
comedies and reads out there but when
you have something as big budget like
sci-fi we were all worried that Doctor
Who was the first to go and then RTD
came in and just wild all of us like oh
it belongs to Sony now
okay had you told me that like 10 years
ago that this was going to happen that
RTD was going to come back he was going
to buy it with bad wolf and bad wolf was
going to be bought out by Sony and you
know the guys who made Spider-Man the
Spider-Man movie and then Disney plus
was going to distribute it I thought you
you know I would have you check for
drugs there was no Wayne heck and I was
like I just remember being so
ecstatic because I remember it was not
Disney plus but what was it X Disney XD
or something like that yeah for uh for
two small years
they had they've attendant episodes on
there they did yeah I remember the
commercials like they did and yeah they
had um they brought out the the doctor
would bring out the um
and it would say on there's like a
doctor who has ah exterminate so they
gave warning sign to the kid via the
psychic paper and it was all David I was
like oh my God they're really gonna move
in but I remember Doctor Who being on
four channels at one point he was on
sci-fi the original sci-fi not this
s-y-f-y it's you know the Sci-Fi that I
liked it was on Disney it was on PBS it
was on BBC America I was like I'm
getting this I'm getting Doctor Who
everywhere
so uh that that lasted for a while but I
I don't know
I'm wondering how that's going to affect
folks like you the creators of like
comic books and the merchandise where
does that go
or will they even have a say in it
I Russell T Davies has a tremendous
amount to say about what gets out and
what doesn't comic book wise right yeah
he has a lot of power in a good way he
has a lot of power so yeah so that's why
you're not seeing a lot of comic books
right now is my understanding he's kind
of like we need some breathing space
give us some room to get stuff out so
that's why you're not seeing so much
right now so give it a year I think like
and just like in the show he says give
us time to get it up and running you
know to build I think he said to build
the Empire or some term I don't know if
that's exactly what he said but it was
enough
get the universe going right so I think
that's where you're going to start
receiving the slow build uh and he's you
know they probably filled a ton of it by
now at this point based off of what I've
kind of seen and heard so it'll be it'll
be interesting for sure we had spin-offs
like Torchwood Sarah Jean and even if
you want to count that the K-9 Canadian
version out there and it was like there
were spin-offs going nutty and it's just
like now he's talking about spin-offs
again I'm just like
I'm not stopping you yeah and I know
people who started with Torchwood and
ended up in Doctor Who right they loved
this series called Torchwood and it knew
nothing about Doctor Who but somehow
they slid into it well I think it was a
comment earlier about the eighth doctor
or something I I would love to see this
is a perfect way if you're going to put
more content out there I'm sorry so do
do you like the mini episodes do a
season of mini episodes so do like 10 20
10 minute episodes and give us like
these little mini Seasons I mean people
would eat that up right I mean Star Wars
like they're doing with those you know
little prequel yeah lips
yeah even like the visions and and all
those other kind of things where you're
just having like this little kind of
taste of different stuff building a
universe and showing how Dynamic and
large and how much fun you could be
playing within this universe
began Vision again Vision advantage
I just yeah there's so much that could
potentially go on a big finish is and
also the comic books are a tribute to
the this universe just doesn't and it
just keeps expanding and one character
like Jenny the doctor's daughter who
ends up you know one episode and then
gets killed off comes back and she's got
her own series God only knows that
she'll come back and um the stories
never end you know I mean isn't
everybody waiting for that they're
waiting for Susan come back they're
waiting for Ginny come back they need to
okay
we got a photo of her in Capaldi's
little caretaker in his on his desk next
to River that's all we got of Susan like
just yeah bring Susan as uh Carol Ann
Ford back for just one I don't care if
you regenerate or just you know give her
a good story give her a good send-off or
something to bring her back I know she's
done the audio
um but and and I like the audience with
uh Paul McGann and her uh there's audio
it's a Christmas story called Relative
Dimension and I won't go I don't want to
spoiler it but
um it's a really good story and there's
a big uh Family scene
together in there about things
oh
yeah I'm not the only one that heard
that right I'm not the one who heard
that no idea what it was that's okay
I got feedback I was like what is that
okay Kelly how about this question
opposed to you you're sitting at the
desk of RTD what would you tell them if
you had one thing you could tell RTD
besides hire me why would you tell them
I'm tired yeah
there's no chance you get fired
like you know I would love to see again
a Susan comeback storyline or you know I
mean let me design something let me
design uh you know a sonic screwdriver
let me you know I don't know if there's
anything I would tell him you know uh
what to do but I don't know okay you get
to design a screw a sonic screwdriver
what does it look like it looks like
this
I don't know I don't have some Grand
idea I mean they've done so many over
the years but I'm sure I could throw
something together and uh not make it
look like a lightsaber
wow oh
come on I couldn't say it wouldn't be
like a mini lightsaber you know like a
lady Vader or lightsaber or something I
don't know
that would be amazing
is that yeah
I do have the sport I have the spark in
my drawer it was given to me as a gift
yeah so the uh so the uh 11th Doctor
remote TV remote I mean come on was that
that was pretty dang cool
I've seen other people who
I saw it at Comic Con at San Diego and I
didn't play with it because they were
trying to you know sell it and all that
kind of stuff I'm like oh this is
actually pretty cool
but I had already spent a lot the 11th
doctor tongs those were my favorite it
was a huge yeah I said I actually played
it with um uh Heather who used to own a
uh Heather
um my friend who used to go around she
had a doctor who merchandise Foods at
the conventions and she always had these
Doctor Who tongs it was the 11th
Doctor's sonic screwdrivers like this
big and you pulled it out and it was
just these cooking tongues so I'm just
like wow
that's the one I would go for
I would be afraid to put those things
near a grill because usually all that
kind of fun stuff was plastic yeah
exactly
well the fun parts to go into the grill
are not but if you were to put it on the
grill yeah that would be the yeah
but uh I don't know so I what
just let me run around the Tardis sub
again
which I got to do that that was did you
get to do that I did I did how did you
get to do that um
um so I did my first show in uh the UK a
few years back and uh you know it was in
leads called thought bubble and this guy
comes around we start talking we
actually had a friend in common we were
like oh you're talking about art and
everything and uh he's like what are you
doing I was like well my wife and I were
just gonna rent a car we're gonna go do
this we're gonna go to cart up and see
the uh you know the Doctor Who
experience I'm here let me at least go
do it you know and like he goes um would
you like to tour this uh the Tardis I'm
like
oh yeah I would what are you what do you
mean well come to find out he was a
producer on the show
um for like a year two two and a half
years
um he worked on like the 50th
anniversary special and stuff like that
so yeah I got to go over there my wife
and I got to run around the sub the
Tardis for like a few hours I took
pictures and uh I went through
everything and a lot of those pictures
actually used as reference foreign
silver one so like there were pictures I
was taking of the guitar rack and I put
it in you know just yeah close over it
but it was like the hulanta cover I used
um that's where he went through work
yeah I need these photos reference
photos I took like thousands of pictures
yeah speaking of wife I want to
congratulate you congratulations on your
19th anniversary oh thank you thank you
that was awesome yeah and you together
19 years yes yes it's like wow it's like
pretty and we dated one so we actually
known each other since two so like 24
years we've known each other which is
just I I'm so thankful uh just so
so happy and blessed and uh man yeah
it's just been it's been a great life
it's been great spending time with her
it's been a journey it's a journey it's
a journey it is yeah and so another 19
and another 19 after that and another 19
after that I don't know about that maybe
maybe one or two more I don't know about
three more
you're in the bathroom picking each
other's Dentures up that's how that's
well
I guess right yes
so I just real quick I think that I find
amazing with relationships or our
relationship is that somebody would they
would choose to spend their life with
you I think that's one of the most
amazing gifts ever you know that
somebody would choose you know I know
marriage isn't for everybody for me it
is and uh somebody's like yeah you know
what I want to spend my life with you I
think
that's just amazing to me I joke that my
husband has to deal with me so I'm like
oh that's thank you I thank you for some
part of it though right nobody was
killed yeah
but yeah it was fun for her she ran
around and said that she's not a big
sci-fi person she's not but to her just
so she's pulling levers and you know she
was having a great time too
enjoyment what does she do what does she
do for a living if you don't let me ask
you oh she's uh she's a much better
person than me she actually helps people
so she's a therapist and uh oh okay it's
a it's a that man that's a brave she's a
brave person because I um I I like
talking with people and I my you know
sympathize and empathize to uh to help
people in that fashion is amazing
because I I couldn't do it
it takes it absolutely takes a special
certain someone to be able to help and
compartmentalize for their own mental
health and assist others with theirs so
yeah that's Bravo to her I mean it also
takes a special someone to be able on
the other side of that to support her as
well yes it's important yes let's talk
about me and more how much I support her
no you're right you're you're a thousand
percent right just trying to find the
balance of like just being a therapist
too you know
one of my contracts is working for a
psychology clinic so yeah no I'm I'm my
psychologist psychologist
well I find for me like actually kind of
like when people look at my artwork I
can make them laugh and smile about
something when they're looking through
my portfolio of artwork
then I've done my job I've made them
I've entertained them I made them happy
even if it's for half a second then I've
helped them
Mark Robinson has a question Kelly would
you do a do dark style of comics like
James obar he you know I I'm never I've
read the crow books and all that stuff
and I think they're fantastic I mean I
read
books in that vein everything but I've
always kind of found myself attracted to
a little bit more of the brighter
poppier more you know I've never so with
Amber Adams I would never like want to
go super dark with her I like to keep
things light and bouncy because I feel
like there's so much darkness in the
world that I want to give some light to
the world you know that's not to say
that that discounts what James did with
the with the crow and all that stuff
um it was definitely a place for it but
that's just not my story to tell right
so yeah nope that's fair yeah good
question though yeah
is there any other questions Christian
that I have is it I just um
I do see one well there we go what's
your favorite one what's your favorite
UK comic oh that's I mean honestly
I'll be honest with you I have not read
too many
UK in the sense of like
uh well I will tell you this I mean the
stories weren't any different but
um we had an Irish exchange student come
over to stay with us in the early 80s
for two summers and everything and he
would always bring me a stack of Star
Wars weekly Comics okay you know and
there were some other things mixed in
there as well I can't remember what so I
can't say you know I haven't really
gotten into the judge I mean I've read
some of the American Judge Dread things
I just it's never been easily accessible
for me so that's not to say that I
wouldn't read it and I wouldn't even
know where to start maybe to start with
2000 A.D from the the very first one I
hear some great things about those runs
and everything but yeah I'll be honest
with you I haven't read as much UK books
as I probably should and that that was
more again accessibility I think when I
was growing up was just not having that
you know because if you ordered
something it took six months to get here
and that's even if you could get it so
I'm open to reading UK books how about
that okay
yeah nowadays it's everything you can
get is in what two days thanks sir
thanks to Amazon you're like oh what do
you mean I'm I mean I can't get that
instantly I'll just read it online yeah
yeah okay folks well Kelly thank you so
