welcome back coming up October 5th which
I believe is in just two days TR U is
hosting movies for mental health this is
a special evening it takes place in the
Irving K Barbour Center here to talk to
us about it we have Chelsea Corsi with
who's with the Wellness Center and Kim
Meyerhoff who is a fourth year nursing
student
great to have you guys here thank you
for having us first of all Kim your ass
nursing student how are you involved in
this I'm working with Chelsea at the
Wellness Center this semester as a
fourth year practicum student mm-hmm so
I'm helping with like arranging events
and helping develop naloxone dispensary
at tier you mm-hmm and yeah those are
just part of my roles that's awesome
yeah and I don't know much about the
Wellness Center maybe we can start with
that sure is it about well I've been on
campus actually for 13 years so I'm
holes with in what's called Casa
counseling academic supports an
assessment department and my role really
is to provide health promotion and loss
prevention opportunities education for
students and employees so I do
one-to-one health consultations with
students for example we had a student in
who's overwhelmed with all you know
she's an international student kind of
overwhelmed with the change like
homesick lonely trying to help her you
know manage some of those cope with
those stresses I do workshops on campus
so yesterday I was with our animal
health technology students talking about
stress kind of that timing year midterms
papers are starting and I call September
the honeymoon month so the honeymoons
over and now they're getting really
having to get to work this is an example
the movies for mental health I do
campus-wide events so throughout the
year we do big events to engage the
whole campus we have a student wellness
ambassador team so this year there's 12
students working with me who actually
help me run the Wellness Center we
actually have a space where students can
come hang out talk to a peer grab some
tea we have bean bags in the hallways
they can relax
I also working with Kim who's working on
some mental health and substance use
programming with me mm-hmm and then I do
kind of dabble in other things on campus
trying to be you know raise the issue of
health and well-being for the whole
campus so tell me a little bit about
movies for mental health
taking place Thursday night yes Thursday
what is it all about obviously you're
promoting a mental wellness and to have
people sort of band together exactly
well as we know mental health impacts
all of us in our communities and our
families and on campus for sure and so
this is our Mental Health Awareness Week
we try to do a week every year we also
do stress Buster's and that's their kind
of more fun activities to reduce stress
but you know sometimes mental health is
hard to talk about there's a lot of
stigma and usually if someone is to
experience an episode of you know low
mood depression anxiety or another
mental illness it usually happens in
late adolescence early adulthood so it
releases the population coming to
university I thought we're trying to
target and so this event is partnership
with art with impact which is a national
kind of group who really tries to make
talking about mental health accessible
by using social media using films like
using art as kind of a vehicle to
discuss topics that have a lot of stigma
and are you know taboo sometimes yes so
did the movies themselves center around
this topic yep so the event is actually
really cool I'm really excited that
they're coming what they do is they
actually have it's called all of film
contests
so now I'd leave from art with impact
wanted me to tell everyone if you're a
filmmaker out there or involved in art
they have a monthly contest so you can
submit a five-minute movie around mental
health and submit it to art with impact
org and they they have a winner every
month so which is cool is that they show
they pick three films so we introduce
everyone and they pick three short films
that are five minutes approximately and
we actually discuss and have a dialogue
about each film and then the cool part
is at the end of that we actually have a
panel of students and community
professionals to talk about their role
in the community if they're professional
or if they're a student their experience
with mental health struggles and
challenges but what they've done to kind
of help cope and and you know get better
went on so it's awesome because I think
when students hear from other students
it allows them you know opportunity to
feel like they're not alone
and and gives them a chance to sit to
reflect on themselves and you know one
of the students actually who is gonna be
on the panel said it took for another
student in one of her classes to talk
about her own struggles with mental
health and she thought wow I'm not the
only one I want to give back to the
community so I really admire the
students for coming for it it's really
courageous
and very vulnerable of them to share
their stories I think it's the hardest
time in your life is to come forward
about something like that and be
vulnerable in your adolescence and talk
about that stuff but if other people are
doing it I think this is the perfect
opportunity right we have about 30
seconds any final thoughts on do you
just show up show up at by 30 to 7:30
and I think it'll be a really powerful
evening so you know we watched some of
the films and I mean okay you can see
kind of what you thought about what you
saw
yeah they kind of just tug at your
heartstrings and really show you what
mental health is and just the aspects
around creating dialogue and reducing
stigma and yeah they're very good that's
awesome
all right you guys thank you for being
here we got a good glimpse into what
this night is all about it's about not
being afraid to come forward and share
in what your struggles are there'll be
other people there as well going through
similar things
