Since the introduction of goal-line technology to the Premier League in 2013

fans might no longer argue about whether a ball has crossed the line, but they're

increasingly arguing about everything else. A lack of faith in the officiating of

football games can be frustrating and with solutions available in the form of

modern technology,

why is football so hesitant to embrace the latest ideas?

It's difficult to argue that goal-line technology has been anything other than

a resounding success in the Premier League, the lack of barroom brawls and

phone in hot air suggest that fans are generally willing to accept technology

making some decisions.

However that doesn't mean they won't argue when things are less clear-cut,

like offsides and red cards.

The ire has not been reduced, just more concentrated and technology is not yet

able to deal with the more ambiguous cases. Yet the problem with technology

and football is not to be found in its concept but in its application. One

argument to reject the death penalty is that mistakes in the justice system mean

the inevitable death of innocent people.

Another argument is that the in efficiencies of execution causes an

unacceptable amount of harm before death. In this regard

some people believe that capital punishment is correct but there is no

good system to administer it.

Similarly, a problem with football technology is in its application. The

Premier League is the only UK league to currently use goal-line technology. Boiled

down, this means that football in the Premier League is different to football

in the championship and every other UK league. The current degree of difference

might be minuscule but with the implementation of further technology

that degree will expand. If football embraces two-tier system of refereeing

and opens up the game for more inequality beyond the usual financial questions.
