For Better or Worse CGI is now an

integral part of the Cinematic industry

the advancement of technology to produce

on-screen results that would not be

physically possible otherwise appeared

perfectly suited for the horror genre in

particular but an egregious crime

against Cinema is when said visual

effects fall desperately flat on screen

now excuses can be made when the film is

an independent production on a budget of

less than six figures but in rarer cases

when the film is a multi-million dollar

production that debuts an example of

woeful CGI fans are left scratching

their heads as to how such enormous

Financial backing could lead to such

dismal results and so with that in mind

I'm Ellie with what culture here with

five high-budget horror movies with

terrible CGI

number five it and its chapter 2. Andy

misquietti and convincing CGI work would

appear to be mutually exclusive the

Argentine is a talented director one

does not receive the praise and backing

of Guillermo del Toro without good

reason however it is not unfair to

surmise that muskieti may be in need of

alternative contacts within the CGI

industry based on several standout

examples in his Flagship films while the

agonizing effects within Mama have

already been mentioned some of the more

disastrous visual work within muskete's

films pops up in his two-part take on

Stephen King's It

biscietti's interpretation of the

classic Horror Story was positively

received for the most part while the

first chapter was universally acclaimed

the glowing reviews fell off

considerably for the sequel which was

criticized as overly lengthy convoluted

and reliant on the success of the

original the original standout ruinous

CGI moment actually occurs within the

opening sequence the animation of

pennywise's teeth clamping onto Georgie

is an unmitigated catastrophe fast

forward to the sequel and another aspect

of pennywise's mouth came under Fire

this time disapproval was directed

towards the depiction of the nightmarish

Clown's tongue in addition to his

unconvincing overall appearance factor

in a wave of negative reaction to the

clearly rushed digital de-aging of the

original adolescent cast members and

muscietti's adaptation is saddled with

the unfortunate tag of a film whose

computer Graphics failed to do the

franchise's eye-watering budget of more

than 100 million dollars Justice this

depressed addressing statement gains

even more Credence when one considers

how incredible Pennywise looks in the

scenes relying only on makeup number

four Van Helsing Van Helsing holds

prominent and cherished status in the

movie so terrible their great category

while the merits of Van Helsing have

been debated upon critical reappraisal

of the fantasy horror the film's

reputation for possessing some of the

worst CGI ever seen remains firmly

intact adopting a throw everything out

the wall and something might stick

approach to filmmaking Van Helsing

manages to cram every literary monster

you can think of into a 131 minute run

for Hugh Jackman to scale menacingly at

and engage in witty repartee with before

firing off Bolts from a medieval

crossbow machine gun combination in

their Direction it's a ridiculous romp

of a film and a thoroughly enjoyable one

unless one happens to be a passionate

CGI Enthusiast Van Helsing was shot on a

whopping budget of approximately 165

million dollars which almost beg belief

when some of the effects within the film

look like they cost less than 165

dollars of particular notes are the

werewolf sequences with Jackman's

transformation from Human to lycanthrope

in the film's climatic fight with

Dracula where his skin literally falls

off being notably hard to watch with a

straight face most viewers cracked long

before when Van Helsing battles a

calamitously animated version of Mr Hyde

in the film's introduction think 1990s

era arcade game characters bashing each

other and you're not too far off the

on-screen result considering the film

essentially revolves around characters

that require CGI to do them Justice one

wonders what on Earth the budget for the

latter was spent on number three the

thing John Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi

horror Bonanza the thing has been lauded

as one of the most significant and

well-made horror films ever produced

this was likely a key factor in studio

Executives given the 2011 picture an

enviable War chest but regrettably both

the budget and the soulless manner in

which the producers got the remains of

Carpenter's iconic original makes the

CGI on display within the prequel slash

remake even more unforgivable simply put

the digital efforts within 2011's the

thing are atrocious it speaks volumes to

the quality of the work on offer when

fans Lament The demise of 1980s era

practical effects in relation to a movie

released in the 21st century the

animation is absolutely woeful there is

not one instance across a nearly

two-hour stretch of film where a CGI

monstrosity looks even vaguely realistic

or convincing one scene in which the

creature absorbs an unfortunate victim

literally has to be seen with one's own

eyes for one to believe that such a

sequence featured in a film that cost

nearly 40 million dollars the thing even

lacks the Redemptive qualities often

found in horror movies with terrible CGI

combining a measly whole riddled plot

with the fact that the movie is Too

Proud to embrace the more ridiculous

tropes of its premise much like Samuel

Bayer's transgressions in a Nightmare on

Elm Street the butchering of such a

staple of the genre is a cardinal sin

amongst Die Hard fans embellishing a

tired remake with subpar CGI just the

icing on a particularly abysmal cake

number two the ring two dear oh dear one

of the more Infamous uses of

disastrously deplorable CGI within a

horror movie ambled onto screens when

The Ring 2 hit Cinemas worldwide in

2005. the original outing of the Ring

was a Smash Hit grossing nearly 250

million dollars worldwide and garnering

positive feedback from critics and

audiences alike the Wildfire success of

the first installment led to a sequel

being green lit and given a massive

budget of 50 million dollars which may

makes the scene featuring The now

notorious herd of malevolent deer that

terrorized Rachel and Aiden Keller while

out on the road even more embarrassing

for starters producers could have picked

anything it could have been wolves or

bears but dear it's hard to imagine a

less frightening animal particularly

when they are depicted on screen as they

are in the ring too the CGI is a laggy

cartoonish mess with the deer appearing

so blurry it's like they were drawn onto

whatever screen the unfortunate viewer

is watching on with a marker the

sequences where the deer kicked things

up a notch pursuing and battering the

car is more reminiscent of a sketch from

Looney Tunes as opposed to a terrifying

chase the animation is legitimately so

bad that it's hard to suppress one's

laughter it is simply baffling as to how

such a high budget film could stumble on

the animation of something as simple as

a deer don't stop Aiden continually

mumbles throughout the sequence please

make it stop the agonized audience howl

back number one The Mummy Returns while

the mummy and the wave of sequels and

spin-offs that followed that original

May arguably class more within the

fantasy sub-genre as opposed to a fully

fledged horror franchise what cannot be

questioned is just how bad the CGI is

within the second installment The Mummy

Returns boasting a jaw-dropping budget

of 100 million dollars after temporarily

dispatching imotep Rick O'Connell and Co

find themselves confronted with an even

bigger and badder Supernatural villain

This Time Around The Scorpion King

played by none other than Dwayne Johnson

himself having spent 5 000 years trapped

following a Faustian deal with Anubis

the great warrior is now half human and

half scorpion as he takes on Rick and

imotep in the film's climatic Showdown

one would imagine that the on-screen

depiction of such a creature would be a

terrifying Visage but the CGI team

struggled to even make the Scorpion King

resemble Johnson it's like watching a

film with a PlayStation 2 character

crudely embedded over the original take

not that this isn't all thoroughly

enjoyable Johnson Roars and flails

before being dispatched in a puff of

smoke in a suitably ludicrous conclusion

to another fun ancient Egyptian romp the

bizarre thing about how bad the CGI work

on The Scorpion King is is that a large

portion of the visual effects within the

Mummy Returns are excellent the pygmies

and the army of Anubis are absolutely

superb considering the film was released

back in 2001 and that concludes our list
