hey everyone Jeff here from films at
home and today we're going to take a
look at the latest entry in the MCU on
4K Blu-ray from Disney
[Music]
hey everyone thanks for coming back to
the channel today for this review today
we're taking a look at Ant-Man and the
WASP Quantum Mania on 4K Ultra HD
Blu-Ray now in this review I'll talk
about the movie itself a little bit
we're going to cover the video and
compare it to the Disney plus 4K stream
we'll also talk about the audio special
features packaging and let you guys know
whether or not this one's worth picking
up for your movie collection so to kick
things off quickly on the movie itself I
think as you guys probably know I'm not
a huge fan of recent MCU entries I sort
of tapped out at the end of Avengers end
game and I haven't been really happy
with like phase 4 phase five of the MCU
there have been a few movies out there
that I liked unfortunately Ant-Man and
the WASP Quantum media this is one that
I think had a lot of good ideas and
maybe could have been something but
ultimately just kind of became nothing
and I'm actually afraid with everything
that's come out about Jonathan majors
and you know potentially having to
recast Kang or go into different
direction that this movie could
potentially become sort of Irrelevant in
the scheme of things within the MCU it
could be looked at like the black atom
of the DC EU like this movie that
existed and was going a certain way but
now had to go in a different direction
because things changed like I see that
as potentially where quantumania could
fit in I didn't like the whole
quantumania like Multiverse thing I
don't I thought Doctor Strange was
better than this when it talks about
like Multiverse and different universes
like that Multiverse of Madness was a
better movie in that aspect I think
Spider-Man into the spider-verse does a
better job with it there are other
movies that handle this space better and
I thought it was just a little bit of a
lackluster effort obviously that
resulted in you know not quite the level
of MCU box office success that Disney
usually expects and I do think that this
movie has them rethinking some of what
they're doing with this next phase and
with their next few releases because
this one just fell a little bit flat for
me now in the the visual side of things
this is unfortunately going to be one of
the rare cases where I actually think
that the Digital streaming version of
this movie is a better viewing
experience than the 4K disc and I know
that's maybe controversial the physical
media collectors but the thing is when I
go to Disney plus and I watch Ant-Man
and the wasp quantumania in that IMAX
enhanced video with Dolby Vision HDR
it's a better image the HDR 10 color
grade here I thought was a little bit
too dark and I think when you go to
Disney plus IMAX enhanced plus Dolby
Vision HDR it feels like that was graded
a little bit better it's a little more
vibrant it's a little brighter I enjoyed
the way that looked better and yes it's
not going to be as pristine like it's
not going to be as sharp but there are
other things outside of resolution and
sharpness that I look for when I'm
watching a movie and the addition of
those iMac sequences also help push this
to the next level so this is one case
where I think if you want the best
visual experience Disney plus 4K IMAX
enhanced is going to be it now the movie
does have a 4k digital intermediate
which means you're getting a very sharp
picture here on the disk my issues are
much more with the color grade it's very
sharp it's very detailed but CGI is also
sticking out like a sore thumb in this
movie and that's a common problem with a
lot of CGI heavy movies where you've got
stuff shot at a very high resolution
like your actors you're shot in a very
high resolution great cameras and then
the CGI on the back end is rushed it's
rendered at a lower output it just looks
uncanny valley it looks out of place it
becomes extremely noticeable in a way
that only 4K can do the 1080p Blu-ray it
doesn't look as out of place as it does
when you watch this on 4K so it's one of
those interesting things about 4K is
that it can expose some poor CGI which
unfortunately I think this movie has now
on the audio side of things I'm actually
happy to report that I think this is one
of the better MCU and Disney Atmos mixes
that has come out in the last several
years as you probably have heard from me
and many others a lot of the Disney
movies especially Marvel movies where
we're expecting this bombastic big Atmos
track have been a little bit lacking the
base usage and the low ends have been
pretty poor and overall it just feels
kind of gimmicky to even call some of
that stuff Atmos it's really a marketing
term but in this case I felt like I got
a little bit more out of it the base was
better there were more surround effects
there was a little bit more height
engagement it felt more immersive I
thought it was a pretty decent
experience and definitely one of the
best MCU discs out there when it comes
to audio now for the packaging here I've
got the standard slip cover pack you got
your pretty typical like Disney stuff
going on Cinematic Universe Edition all
that packaging that they usually do
opening it up same artwork on the inside
and popping this open you will see that
you got a Blu-ray disc and a 4K disc
there's also a digital code that's
included which would redeem in 4k now
it's interesting that you know in the
marketing again Kang and Jonathan Majors
was a huge part of the marketing and
after allegations and you know we'll see
what happens with that whole case it's
definitely not looking good for him he's
barely on the cover right he's kind of
up here in the corner he's very much
downplayed he's not even listed on the
back as an actor they list Paul Rudd
they list Evangeline Lilly they don't
even talk about him he's not on the back
of the case it's interesting he's on the
discard but man they really underplayed
him when it came to the home video of
this almost as if they were kind of
retconning that character and maybe
getting rid of them now there is also a
steel book that exists for this if you
want to grab that that was a Best Buy
exclusive which has some pretty cool
artwork I think that lines up nicely
with past MCU steel books and past
Ant-Man steel books in particular for me
though I like the standard edition I'm a
slip cover versus a steelbook guy most
of the times but for the steelbook fans
out there that's an option as well now
for features there's nothing on the 4K
disc but on the Blu-ray we get a few
things we get all in the family which is
a conversation between the cast and
their sort of the characters and their
interactions as you know literally
family members formidable foes which
talks about Kang in his larger influence
and impact on the MCU going forward
which I think might be a little bit in
question at this point there's an audio
commentary which has director Peyton
Reed and writer Jeff loveness they talk
about bringing this all to life and then
there's a gag reel which if you know
Paul Rudd is actually very funny like
the gag reel was probably my favorite
feature because Paul Rudd's just a
really lovable funny guy and then
there's a few deleted scenes but you
know nothing over the top crazy but a
decent amount of features especially for
something like this so overall I think
this one's going to come down to who you
are as a collector and who you are as a
movie lover if you want the best visual
experience I think you're getting that
on Disney plus if you want the best
audio
this is on the disk the atmos on Disney
plus can't compete with what you get on
the disk but the IMAX enhanced and the
Dolby Vision hdr on Disney plus still
sells me on a lot of these movies I
think it looks better over there which
is why I wish they'd put those on disk
but unfortunately they aren't if you're
a collector who you know wants to have
his complete MCU you want to make sure
you're a completionist you need this
movie this 4K disc is by no means a bad
disc all I'm saying is that I think if
you don't care so much about this movie
and you just want to have a good visual
experience and you know you don't care
too much about like lossless audio and
all the super high-tech stuff you're
gonna be okay streaming this one over on
Disney plus and this one may not be
worth buying for some of the average
casual Marvel MCU fans or just people
who are curious about this movie it's
probably not worth the purchase for you
if you have Disney plus that's going to
be a really great option to watch this
on if you don't have Disney plus then
there's certainly nothing wrong with
picking this up on 4K so I'll leave this
one up to you guys if you do want to
