Learn how to make a cheap and easy interactive diy holographic display! This device uses a fan and a smoke machine to create a screen of fog. A projector can then be uses to project images onto the screen. A hand tracking tool called leap motion can also be used to input hand gestures and create an interactive hologram display! Best of all this device can be made for very cheap

so today's project guys is something
that I've been thinking about for a
while so one big staple of sci-fi movies
movies in the future
are Holograms so projections of light
that appear to just like pop out of
something you guys you guys know exactly
what I'm talking about
if you guys know anything about me it's
that I think movies are very unfair why
do they get all the cool stuff you know
I want to do that I want to fly I want
to shoot lasers from my hands and
whatnot oh yeah that pretty much led to
all this currently it's impossible to
get like to stop without some sort of
physical object they've done some
primitive stuff like this people have
done like holographic effects where you
project stuff onto a clear screen so it
looks like it's not there Tupac you know
what I'm talking about kidding is
totally alive so I'm gonna try and show
you guys how you can make your own
holographic projector very simply and
very cheaply so we're gonna be
projecting an image on a fog screen that
normally you can't really see what the
light illuminates the little particles
and projects the image and if this ends
up going as planned I'll hopefully be
able to control this with my hand like
I'll be able to touch this mate mate
shift screen and interact with the
actual Holograms so let's hit the
hardware store and see what we can find

so we have most of the pieces cut out
and the way I think this is gonna work
is we're gonna have two box fan on the
base ideally we would have used a tower
fan or something like that something
will blow air more like a channel which
would be better for the smoke screen but
the box fan it's all I had so I'm gonna
make doing it I don't thinking about it
I could use my backpack fan box fan will
be positioned something like that and
then on top of that we're gonna put two
of these foam pieces over the top oh I'm
gonna try and direct the air right out
the middle we'll cap off the ends with
some more foam and then on top of all of
that we're going to have these pieces
the chimney I guess but these pieces are
very important because in between these
pieces we're going to have a ton of
these straw and what these are going to
do is make sure the air comes out nice
and straight its rid of like laminar
flow that's what we're going for we
don't want the air to come out all
choppy because uh box fans they cut up
the air so we need these straws to help
straighten out the air
Oh what's up guys didn't see you there
house is going well glue the pieces
together add a little bit of tape paint
this or put like some vinyl over to make
it look better but yeah for now this is
what we're working with no need to take
these two pieces a bunch of these straws
and make a laminar flow nozzle feel real
smart Sam that word

projector things set up let's see if it
works
now I can't believe I didn't think of
this sooner
instead of using straws another thing I
could use is corrugated plastic that
would save a ton of time for the gluing
be probably stronger see I went back to
the store and grab some of that so what
I think I'm going to do with this is
attach some of the corrugated plastic to
a channel I'll cut in this so this will
feed this smoke right out of the top of
this thing probably gonna take this part
off then on either side of the
corrugated plastic with the smoke more
corrugated plastic that will let the air
from the fan through so ideally we'll
have two streams of air with the smoke
in the middle and I think this will
force the smoke up and out and keep it
and more of like a call and make for a
better screen I don't know we'll see
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
all right first test up these PVC pipe
through and the corrugated plastic
collar I just hold this smoke machine up
to the pipe eventually attach it with
like some pipe or something for now
let's see what happens whoa look at that
guys that's so cool so you can really
see it alright ready wow that's what we
like to see so now we need to put more
corrugated plastic on either side of
this so we can have the fan under there
blowing all the air up and creating a
smoke screen
oh yeah
publish it in three two one
there it is I don't know how well you
guys can see this but from my angle
here's mom seeing that's the smoke
screen alright one more time with the
lights off so as you can see it works a
little bit like you can see when the
laser shines it really illuminates when
it hits the fog but because I'm inside
all the fog just builds up in here and
you can't really distinguish with a
screen is so I'm gonna mount this fan on
fo real we're gonna take it outside to
test it out
[Music]
sorry guys getting PTSD from the fan
injury
[Music]
all right guys everything is set the
Machine obviously right here so lasers
projecting shapes you'll see but ideally
what supposed to happen the smoke comes
out of here and we can actually see the
shapes hovering in midair right about
here right about the thing so let's see
if the way then if this works well
enough we'll try a projector
[Music]
I think there's too much wind out here
so I'm gonna go take this on the porch
and try it again
[Music]
alright guys the lasers they were
definitely projecting on the screen that
could like wave my hand through them so
I rigged up a tiny little projector
attached to my Wii
yeah I'm using a Wii and I don't have a
cable to connect it to my computer yeah
that should be coming in soon though
we'll see if we can project this
projector out of that smoke screen maybe
even play a little Super Smash Bros
don't even challenge me to that game
guys like I'll destroy anyone let's test
it out I just flip the switch I don't
know if you guys can see but it's the
Wii Menu right here it is super blurry
though I'm not even gonna lie off windy
wind wind it's ruining it I currently
got a little better now we are on the
home screen right now
[Music]
now we're talking that's a TV you can
even see the wee icons haha the
resolution is horrible at best what see
what I'm getting at guys like you can
wave your hand right through it
guys can you tell what game that is I
know you can you can literally put my
hand right through this display guys so
lasers and projectors on the fog screen
those are cool at all but I want to be
able to interact at this screen so
here's what I've got going on
let the projector set out connected to
my laptop apologize for the light but
you can't really see the projector
without it so you know what you try and
do this but we also have connected with
this little device right here this
device is kind of like a Kinect
it's called leap motion it pretty much
will track my hands and allow me to
interact with the screen via hand
gestures as you can see it's coming on
the computer so if I put my hand in the
frame so I wave my hand around you can
see what it sees and then it overlays my
hand onto the screen it can pick up
blocks give got a block right there got
the block there we go we can throw it
with this setup because I'm in
front of the projector my hand is
literally being projected onto my hand
hopefully if we're interacting it from
the back you won't see you like this
weird three hand setup of cone on right
here

help me obi-wan Kenobi
you owe me Oh help me obi-wan Kenobi
[Applause]
[Music]
you know know
was the close one guys
it's real close so I would call that a
success for a first try I was using a
pretty low quality projector so if you
have a brighter one it would only work
better make sure to follow me on
Instagram check out these J laser video
it shirts if you're interested so thank
you guys very much for watching I will
see you in the next video
