it's Christmas season in the Chandler

family household it isn't Christmas time

until hans gruber

has fallen out of the Nakatomi Plaza and

Kevin McCallister has defended his home

against burglars said today we're gonna

stop and rake all five home alone movies

yes there are five of them from the

worst some of these are really bad to

the best

[Music]

hi if you're new here my name is Shawn

Chandler and I started this channel

because I was driving everyone around me

crazy talking about movies way too much

if you can relate you're probably in the

right place consider clicking that

subscribe button with that in mind go

ahead and join me down below in the

comment section share your ranking of

all five home alone movies or at least

all the ones that you've seen if you

haven't had to suffer through all five

of them with that said let's go ahead

and get started coming in in last places

home alone for taking back the house

this is one of the worst sequels and

most ill-conceived sequels of all time

for two reasons first off it's a family

Christmas movie about a middle-aged dad

who leaves his wife and kids for a

younger woman who's richer and the movie

is about a spending time with them so

the kids can meet the new mistress lady

that the guy wants to marry right off

the bat that's a terrible concept for a

family Christmas movie second reason

it's awful is that it's supposed to be

Kevin McCallister it's supposed to be

paid Makassar is the dead it's so it's

the dad from the first two home alone

movies who's leaving his family doing

all of this so it's just dreadful from

the onset in a terrible concept from

there it's just a bunch of really cheap

versions of the jokes that worked from

the original film so it goes for all the

slapstick and people don't believe Kevin

but it doesn't a way that makes

absolutely no sense as the house that

they're in has video cameras everywhere

and the criminals are showing up

constantly and they still don't believe

him even though Kevin's like look at the

videotape they're like well the tapes

stopped right there so nothing happened

it's like all right that's it stopped

right there I mean that's the sort of

logic of the movie Marv returns except

he's played by French Stewart there's

just so many things about it that it's

just desperately trying to capture the

magic of the original ones while not

understanding that you're making a movie

about a dad having his midlife crisis

this is not a family movie it's not

funny

it is not remotely good this is a

terrible movie

number four home alone the holiday heist

now this is a harmless but totally lame

Home Alone adventure at least

doesn't make the mistake of the previous

film which was to bring McCallister's

back into it no this is a new group of

kids with a new home alone esque

adventure about kids being trapped at

their house without their parents there

and people trying to break in and so a

little boy has to try and defend his

home the traps here are unbelievably

stupid one of them involves trying to

trick one of the robbers into thinking

the house is haunted by ghosts another

one involves him tricking one of the

robbers into eating cookies that I guess

maybe had alka-seltzer in them or

something like that and then he tries to

wash his mouth out and start shooting

like cotton or foam out of the drain

things like that that aren't funny and

they don't work as traps to try and take

out criminals that's the level of this

particular movie I mean it's not

offensive like the idea of making a

family movie about a guy cheating on his

wife but it's not good either

no one saving grace here is there's a

little bit of a subplot about the boy in

the movie who has a video game buddy

that they talk play video games online

with and the guys are college students

so our little boy gets some advice from

him and he kind of ties into the third

act of the film that was mildly clever

it provided the funniest moments in the

film but really this is not a good home

alone film and third place is home alone

3 this movie feels like the rear window

plus home alone

- Christmas that's what this movie is

like it actually to me feels like a

Nickelodeon original knockoff of home

alone rather than an actual home alone

movie because it has the premise of

people trying to break into a house but

it also kind of cranks up the broad

humor nature of it the kid uses a lot

more technology there's more robbers

that are all kind of playing it a lot

more broad goofy faced comedy I mean you

can just look at the poster for the

movie and immediately realize that

they're kind of going for a lower common

denominator with this film and that's

not necessarily a bad thing but it's

certainly not - the pedigree of the

first two home alone films it's just

more simple entertainment I almost feel

like putting slapping home alone on this

movie in the title

because then you're comparing it to

those first movies as opposed to other

kind of broad family comedies that it

actually has more in common with

probably the most interesting thing

about this movie is that Scarlett

Johansson is one of the siblings inside

of it so it's kind of fun to see what

ten-year-old Scarlett Johansson show up

inside of this film but just in general

this movie does not have the level and

talent in front of the camera that the

first two films had I mean obviously

your Macaulay Culkin is one of the

classic iconic child actors of all time

and the kid in this movie he's cute he's

good he's not bad but he's also not

Macaulay Culkin and then you can even go

and go into the deeper side characters

inside of the first two home alone films

that you have John Candy showing up for

sequence of the original and in the

second film you have improv stand-up

comedian Donald Trump in a scene down

the hall to the left

taking on its own terms it's a fun

enough kids movie but when you slap the

name home alone on it it doesn't compare

all that well to the original to home

alone movies despite a hashtag that was

trending a couple days ago on Twitter

our runner-up is home alone - lost in

New York this is one of the rare

template sequels that manages to

actually still capture all the magic and

fun of the original and what I mean by

that is that this movie follows the

exact structure and template of the

original film beat by beat character by

character with only a few additions here

and there but it's just swapping out him

being lost at home with him being lost

the New York and from there it just kind

of follows the exact same pattern but

with this movie it works with most

comedies that try and do that it just

falls flat and the magic is gone but

somehow with this movie it still

captures everything that worked about

the original film the slapstick humor

works the emotional sections work the

new characters are fun and - a lot of

people I know a lot of people to think

that this movies even better than the

original largely because the third act

and all the traps are even bigger and

better inside of this film also it has a

real

fun side cast inside we've got Tim Curry

Rob Schneider social-media influencer

Donald Trump down the hall into the left

all kind of thrown into the mix inside

of it and it's a movie that all the

pieces were still coming together like

all the creative energy that brought the

magical original it's all still here

maybe not quite as fresh in this movie

is about 20 minutes longer I don't know

that it necessarily needs 20 more

minutes to tell its story but a great

addition to the home alone franchise and

a movie that I watched just as much as

the original but coming in at first

place is the original home alone this is

one of those films that actually kind of

feels like movie magic brought all of

the perfect pieces together of course

you can kind of go through the fact that

you got Joe Pesci this serious actor to

be in this slapstick comedy you've got

Macaulay Culkin who turned out to be one

of the most likable and charming

childhood actors of all time you've got

a script from John Hughes you have a

very early directorial work from Chris

Columbus who went on to direct some of

the Harry Potter movies and then John

Williams decided to score this movie

about a boy setting traps at his house

and when you pull all those pieces

together you just have something really

special that shouldn't exist it

shouldn't have come together and then of

course it turned into this just kind of

heartfelt very funny comedy that for now

thirty years people have been loving my

children my five-year-old daughter loves

this movie watches it all the time and

is fully aware of the fact that the boy

that plays Kevin and this one is better

than the kid that plays Gavin and all

the other ones and the kids and the

other ones there's something special

about Macaulay Culkin and what he

brought to the screen and to that point

this is a movie that of course the peak

of it that it's most famous for the

third act with all the traps but the

movie is still just as fun and funny and

engaging and memorable and quotable when

it's doing all this set up inside of you

keep the change you filthy animal all

these little moments the slapping of the

face all of it memorable

iconic Christmas

family movie moments that everybody

knows that have made their way into the

popular culture my five year old my

seven year old still love it and I still

have a great time with it every single

Christmas actually multiple times every

single Christmas so easily it comes in

at number one we sure to share your

breaking down below in the comments

section if you want to know some of my

other favorite Christmas movies check
