there is a range of social psychological
developmental as well as physical
benefits of sport participation and all
children with sustained involvement in
sport stand to benefit long term the
issue that we have is that while many
children start very few continue hi i'm
dr sam elliott i'm a senior lecturer and
researcher at flinders
parents can directly impact children's
enjoyment and motivation but they can
also impact their perceptions of
competence and in combination these are
really strong predictors of whether
children are likely to continue or
withdraw from sport long term what we
understand is that a lot of parents
don't know how to engage in sport they
don't know how to have those
conversations there was a nationwide
campaign called the let kids be kids
campaign policies reform
rules are often designed from an adult
lens and so this was really a
perspective to really put the child
first and it really highlighted that
their needs and their voices can be
heard if we allow them to and it was
underpinned by one soul citation which
happened to be my research the campaign
resulted in a range of infographics
there was 12 000 downloads of these
resources so the impact is real and
that's one of several examples where we
actively seek to disseminate and to
translate our work beyond the realm of
academia and into the community so that
we can affect change with immediacy the
kind of hdr students that i'm interested
in working with are those that have a
why a reason for wanting to do their
area and if they know what that is if
they're passionate about the belief that
sport can empower change then they are
the students i want to work with
