You may also like to read about:
over the course this video I'm trying to
give you a quick snapshot of the subject
of sports science in particular Banga
University's offerings of this the
courses that we actually offer in terms
of undergraduate and master's degrees
and then also the type of learning that
you could expect if you arrive here so
what is for science or why might you
want to study sports titles the classic
environment that we offer here centers
around high performance that would be a
sport science basically but you also
have great number of opportunities of
where our staff and students influence
the field of research and impact in
society in terms of the NHS for example
a lot of our research works directly
with exercise rehabilitation and how
benefits of exercise might be beneficial
for those individuals who are recovering
from or suffering from diseases we work
with extreme environments so very hot
very cold climates which could be with
elite athletes you think of Tokyo games
that are now going to happen 2021 it's
going to be an incredibly hot
environment there so how can we get
people to the highest level possible
you'll study aspects of that but that's
also true if you look at environments
with high altitude so climbers or the
military that might be going off and
sleep deprivation a restricted calorie
intake or exercises in very hot and very
cold climates where they have to produce
military base them performances the same
could be true for police environments
was very stressful or in the fire
brigade where you have to work in
extreme heat so lots of our research and
lots of the stuff you study will be
directly influenced in regards of that
we also have the other end of exercise
which we might call sport or
participation so we look at how we can
tackle obesity in society how we can get
people exercising more so there's a
great wealth of things that a sports
science subject could do for you outside
of the traditional performance base my
Banga University there are three things
that
strongly believe that you ought to look
at when you're choosing a university and
that is the quality of the teaching the
quality of the research and the impact
of now as previously stated the impact
of our research reaches far and wide
beyond that of sport so examples of the
military the NHS the Armed Forces
there's a great many things that we
offer and it of course into the into the
performance related aspect of sports or
elite sport and all of our research in
the last exercise framework or research
exercise frame which is a government-run
government-run exercise which occurs
every five to six years all of our staff
that were entered into that will
recognize this world leading or
internationally recognized scientists so
what does it actually mean to you it
means that the individuals that are
teaching you in the lectures are
producing the research which is changing
the field of sport science so that will
directly influence the quality of the
teaching that you get here and the
experience that you have not all
universities or sports science
departments are entered into that and
those that are don't will not finish as
we did in that top 10 so we were seventh
so you really want to look at the
quality when you're choosing you old
sport science sports science university
where am I actually going to study and
what is the quality of that research
what is the impact of that research the
other side of that is the teaching
aspect because our research directly
informs our teaching the quality of our
teaching is very high and we really do
value the quality of our students you
can see there's a number of different
metrics that we have and if you have a
look across those from research impact
teaching and the quality the degrees we
get we sit very highly in much the
competitors we obtain very clearly in
the top five or six sports fans depart
in the school of sport have a nice
answer Topanga there are three research
areas or teaching areas that you will
experience when you're here there's the
Institute for the psychology of
performance which looks at the
psychology aspect of sports science
there is the physical activity health
and well-being Research Center
which basically looks at performance
physiology health physiology aspects of
psychology within that as well to
determine the well-being of individuals
how physical activity may help enhance
performance and also how physical
activity can help with general
well-being at health and population and
then we have the extremes research group
which looks a high-performance
physiology in psychology in
environmental conditions which are not
what we would normally experience in
day-to-day them such as high altitude or
very hot and very cold climates but who
do we work with as a department there's
a wealth of individuals that we that we
work across but I think what's useful to
look at is if we name drop just a few of
them you can see the quality of the
institutions you work with is probably
reflective of the quality of the degree
in the department meal so we work with
the Welsh Institute of Sport the English
Institute of sports and at the highest
level of UK schools we work with the
English and wild cricket board we work
with the wiU and the RFU
we work with the NHS we'll work with men
cap we work with local organisations
that are also looking the outdoors so
outlook expedition there's a great many
different activities that we do across a
number of different high level
stakeholders it means that we can give
you a great number of possible work
placement outlets during your degree so
that you can get some valuable
employability experience with those
partners that we work with because we
already have doors open to enable
students to have interactions with those
high level organizations so what degree
programs that we offer here we offer
five different degree programs at the
moment we have traditional sports
science which is performance related
where you will focus on sporting
performance and an example of the sort
of module that you might be this slides
for science of a link to performance
we're looking at the athletes and really
trying to understand what is what
strives or what enables athletes and
individuals to become elite individuals
we also have as for Health and Exercise
Sciences degree which sort of has a
health focus on that really so we're
looking more along health and an
exercise science and an example module
there will be physical activity and
health so understanding health physical
activity can promote health and
well-being we have us for an exercise
psychology PBS accredited degree now if
you know that you want to call yourself
a sports psychologist or psychologist
upon graduation and that's definitely
the degree route for you because in
order to use that term psychology your
degree needs to be British Psychological
Society accredited and a sort of example
of a module in there would be support
psychology of sports performance
particularly looking at the mind games
that individuals might want to
participate in if they're going to be
elite performance we also have our sport
health and physical education degree
which is kind of a combination of our
sport science performance and health
degrees but with a PE slant to it as
well so we're looking at physical
literacy health and well-being and some
of the examples of why that degree is
different to others you'll do a teaching
placement and have experience with
actually working as a teacher and then
we have our adventure sports Sciences
degree which is basically sports science
but with an adventure twist into or an
outdoor activities twist and the three
sort of routes that you could go down
after that it's got outdoor coaching
adventure tourism or outdoor therapy so
the sorts of things that are really hot
topics at the moment that are using the
outdoors and sports in order to create
both not just tourism centers but also
unique environments from the learn and
get positive experience and something
that you'll do in there as a recent
research expedition we actually go away
plan and conduct research in that
adventure but what sort of lectures will
you experience when you're here in order
to help you understand why Bangor
University really just stand out on
unique learning experience for you I
strongly recommend you review some of
these because we have some videos of
these unique learning experience that
you
have on our website and one that really
Springs out and stands out to mine is
our heart anatomy video so typically
when you learn about the heart and the
cardiovascular system what you'll end up
doing is looking at pictures of art and
discussing hearts in the textbook itself
what we do here is you'll have a lecture
in the textbook so you understand that
side of things of what and how the heart
functions but then you actually get
hands-on experience where you're able to
in this example is actually dissect a
heart and understand that aspect of how
it works and get really hands-on with us
and get a really immersive learning
experience we also do that with the
human anatomy as well we're very
uniquely placed here in that we have
great links with the hospitals in the
medical school so we can get cadavers in
IE donated human bodies the means that
you can understand the different layers
of the human body that you may have
learnt in the physiology lectures and
actually get hands-on experience of how
does that really work when you're
looking at the inside of a human being
so really unique experiences then you
won't get in all sports department I
also recommend that you look over their
website for the career roadmap that we
produce so each one of our degrees
really is is structured for a three plus
one so you could do a degree and it
gives you a very clear route into an MSC
or masters which then is linked very
clearly to the employability sector so
for example dual for science degree can
lead into this for an exercise
psychology or the applied sport science
master's and then it gives you a very
clear route into that performance
performance sports or into that sport
psychology boot but there are many
different aspects of employment after
this one unique thing that we do at
Value University is really do promote
the quality of the courses so that
everything you're doing throughout that
is it gives you some transferrable and
some employability skills so that when
you leave here you have not only the
knowledge but you also have a
practical skill sets to thrive in in the
employability market and lastly is with
in this video it's going to give you a
quick snapshot of the sort of facilities
that we have here now every student that
comes here has to do a research project
which is why we're a research led which
means you get a wealth of experience
within that but what we must have in
order for that to happen is multiple
high performing laboratories so we
actually have 21 separate laboratories
in the sports science department we have
four or five particularly big ones but
if we don't have multiple laboratories
with world-leading
equipment in them then it's impossible
for the number of students who need to
do research projects to be able to get
access to that equipment so we really
have leading laboratory facilities to
enable you to learn the highest level of
sports science practical skills and
theoretical skills that you need and
then we also have really quite unique
environments for which to learn and
study in terms of the sport because
we're located right on the beach in the
mountains with a great activity centers
around us for all sorts of adventure and
risk-taking activities that you might be
interested in but we also have the
traditional sports facilities indeed
we've won consistently I think in the
last five years we have won the clubs
and societies award from them from the
one Union was for the best sports clubs
and societies thing and the facilities
that we have a wide-ranging four across
a number of those different traditional
and up to you more unique sports and I
strongly recommend that you look at the
sport within the website and look at
Caernarfon Brailsford which is our
Center which has world leading great gym
gym equipment in there and also a number
of different sports facilities and
pitches that will enable you to not only
study but continue to do what you love
most which presumably is sport I hope
that gives you a quick snapshot of what
we can offer here at banger please do
get in
touch with any questions that you might
have either through the unibody scheme
on websites or through emailing contact
admissions direct and I look forward to
seeing you
fingers crossed in September and welcome
you to the school of Sport health and
exercise science is at Bang the universe
