i'm andy lemmy i'm a professor of
clinical
exercise physiology i lead a
research group quite a large group that
involves a lot of clinicians from the
hospital
and then of course teaching at an
undergraduate and msc level i look at
muscle wasting associated with chronic
disease
so we look at
the effects this has on on
function disability and then we look at
ways of restoring that muscle and
and
thereby restoring function
and reducing disability so it's things
like exercise nutrition
certain drugs
all different ways of trying to restore
muscle on these muscle wasted
individuals most of the modules i teach
i
teach
what i research so we're looking at the
importance of maintaining muscle mass
and and
maintaining fitness
so that you can retain functional
ability
and that enables older people to remain
living independently they don't have to
go into homes they don't have to be
cared for most of the research i do is
with rheumatoid arthritis patients
so we've done a few studies looking at
the effects of exercise and they've been
extremely effective in restoring
function in fact in in patients with
long-term disease we've been able to
restore function to the levels that are
equivalent to or better than
healthy
individuals of the same age and the same
gender
but unfortunately
of course most people aren't prepared to
do the amount of exercise that is
required so we're looking at
non-exercise alternatives like diet and
we've
just commenced the study looking at
creatine supplementation
so that's one we're excited about
