The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the point where the lower jawbone meets the skull. This joint allows the lower jaw to move up and down and side to side, so it’s important for chewing, talking, and other facial expressions.

TMJ disorders (TMD) occur when there is a problem with the way the jawbone and the skull meet at the TMJ. TMD can cause pain in the jaw joint and in the muscles that control chewing. The pain can be temporary or long-lasting, and it can be mild or severe.

There are many possible causes of TMD, including teeth grinding (bruxism), clenching the jaw, poor posture, stress, joint problems, and teeth misalignment. TMD is more common in women than in men, and it often occurs in people between the ages of 20 and 40.

There are several treatments for TMD, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, physical therapy, and surgery. In most cases, the goal of treatment is to relieve pain and restore normal jaw function.

If you think you may have a TMJ disorder, talk to your doctor or dentist. They can perform a physical exam and order tests to diagnose the problem.
