loving up two it's actually one sixteen
i'm gonna do an interview with a buddy
of mine he's a
professional dj retired
now he does
uh his own travel channel on public
television he's a sign collector
collects all cool vintage signs that are
rare
and he's one of the friend of mine his
cells here so
i'll interview him be a treat for you
guys to see and
some of you guys might recognize him but
he'll talk about science a little bit a
little bit about his travel channel okay
guys enjoy thanks for watching okay this
is the rest of what i have for sale
still oh
i got a friend here his name is darren
he's got he's a advent sign collector
he's been collecting for years i've
known for over 25 years he's got
probably the best signs out there on the
west coast
coolers coca-cola everything to think of
hey don't forget to mention i also do a
tv travel show called the travel guys
i've been doing that for a lot of years
that's what i do from a real job but my
hobby is collecting these old signs and
uh tell you what the one thing that's
kind of screwed this hobby up is there's
lots of reproductions of signs now but i
only deal in the originals like
a crush sign like this an orange crush
drip sign
besides from the 1940s they do reproduce
it but this one here
would probably be worth around 500 bucks
in today's market and some people they
come and they look at the signs they
walk by and they go what do you want for
that sign and they say 500 they go what
they think it's a piece of tin a piece
of junk but it's original and collectors
true collectors know when a sign's
original and when it isn't and uh
there's lots of reproductions but the
original stuff is where it's at
yeah it's also like a condition like
this it's new obviously new old stock
you can see the uh what do you call that
fox paper sticking to it good eye good
eye there phil this is a uh
higher sign from the 1920s it's called a
tin tacker sign you can see how flimsy
the sign is more sign like a door sign
kick well the reason it was the reason
it's called a tin tacker is because
it's made in super thin tin in the 1920s
because it was meant to have a nail
driven right through the sign so
the store got the store would take this
sign it's so thin they'd take it stick a
nail right here and drive it right
through the sign
so that's how it got the name tin tacker
and that's why it's such thin tin stock
is for that reason but to find one in
this condition with no holes driven
through it and with the paper still
tucked stuck to it because this is what
collectors call new old stock as you
said it's kind of rare so that makes
this sign worth around five six hundred
dollars too just because it's in great
shape and because
it's uh an original tin attacker from
the 1920s yeah hey darren what about
this gas pump skin there what story or
not that's kind of the thing that people
like these days it's basically an
original
gas pump door but it's
it's kind of you know it's obviously got
condition issues but this is what
collectors want to do they want the
distressed look
rusty dirty look the technical term is
the distressed look that's what they
call it yeah so this uh this is an
actual door from a gas pump but
someone's put a decal on it and kind of
gauged the decal to make it look good so
the deck is new but the door itself
this this little panel in here has also
been added to make it look good but if
you don't have room for a gas bumper you
can't afford a vintage gas pump there's
a nail hole right here just nail it
right to your wall and it's got a very
cool look great conversation piece so if
this were an actual
1940s gas pump complete in this
condition in microsoft for 2500 bucks
you want to just buy the door 500 bucks
yeah come on down
in my eyes when i collected anything
rust like that went to scrap pilot
between us collectors that time this
stuff was plentiful anymore 25 30 years
ago today there's thousands and maybe
millions of collectors around the world
this stuff is scary you're right and the
thing is
believe it or not restored gas pumps
have kind of gone out of style this is
the look people want now they want
unrestored and distressed original un un
stored yeah it used to be 20 years ago
you couldn't find a gas pump in this
condition nobody would ever put this in
their house it would be beautifully
painted restored but now it's all about
the distressed look that's what people
like so that's that you know it may
change in a year but right now that's
kind of what uh what the collectors want
that's the american pickers brought the
rusty look out that might have something
to do with those guys because i had to
rusty all cans that are junkers you
wouldn't even take home i'm selling for
five dollars yeah and people are happy
people are super happy exactly i mean
i'm not i'm not going to take away from
an original if you can find an original
gas pump in amazing condition
it's still going to come with a big buck
but they don't exist in amazing
condition they either look like this or
somebody spends a thousand bucks or 1500
bucks and they restore them yeah darren
i'll ask you about your travel channel
yeah i know you've been doing this for
many years i used to be a dj broadcaster
right i worked in radio for a lot of
years i did a morning show in vancouver
uh at uh 650 ci with red robinson but i
do a tv travel show called the travel
guys which airs on
terrestrial tv regular old-fashioned tv
right now and it airs across the country
but
yeah i'm gonna start doing some stuff
for uh our own youtube travel channel so
watch for that in the future yeah so
he's gonna put a youtube uh probably a
blooper blog together everything to
expand his channel and uh do you wanna
be my manager well
i got too many jobs too many things to
worry about right now but anyways this
galaxy travels all around the world
they're cool they drink beer also
they're not like those you know they're
awesome guys thank you for watching
wrong with drinking beer it's a tasty
treat okay now where do you find that
channel now what's it where's it at you
know what our youtube channel is uh it's
been inactive for a while because we
shoot a regular tv show but we're going
to get that up and running again i
believe it's travel guys something
that's the name of it we do have a
youtube channel we have been using we're
going to start using it so what about
regular tv where do we find your channel
watch the show on uh well in vancouver
anyway i'm not sure about other parts of
the country adventure you can watch it
on check tv c-h-e-k on sundays i believe
it airs at 3 00 p.m and 11
30 p.m on sundays how many also on
novice tv in vancouver the cable outfit
nova's deviant airs every day on novus
seven days a week so okay now i think
how many episodes are have been aired so
far show's been on the air it's never
been off the air since 2003 so that's 19
years coming up to our 20th anniversary
we've got something like 350 episodes
all over the world we travel to places
like australia we just got back from
norway uh a week and a half ago next
week i'm going to ireland for the fifth
time to do the show so it's kind of a
personality driven travel show i'm the
goofy guy on the show the other guy's
the more serious guy on the show so i'm
the guy that does all the crazy daring
stuff yeah he's the one that gets drunk
all the time maybe
whatever hey alcohol could be a factor
but what i'm saying is the other guy
just kind of sits back and lets me do
the crazy stuff
yeah so anyways
if you have a chance you can watch it
travel guys um you could probably do a
search on youtube there could be
something up here somewhere go to
travelguystv.com which is our website
yeah that would be the episodes up there
you know if you don't uh if you live in
the us or anywhere else you can
certainly watch the show that way or
just go to youtube and search travel
guys okay one more question darren no no
more questions just a simple question
he's he does an hour show at a time it's
an hour or half an hour a half hour half
an hour
okay to make a half an hour show how
many hours of shooting so the public you
can actually get about 15 hours of
footage
over the course of say
you can do it in five days five six days
usually a week is good 15 hours of
footage at least to make 22 minutes of
content so imagine that i'm doing first
takes here these guys have to work in
the sun the heat it's not all fun and
games they're half time they're working
their butt off really to make an episode
it's so easy
all you just hold up
tv man come on okay darren i appreciate
you thank thank you very much thanks
bill all the best i enjoy your signs and
you are a super guy he's always
supporting me too man when i find uh
cool signs that come to him all the
time tasty treat that's fun to chew
juicy fruit okay buddy thank you very
much thanks for taking the price
packing this stuff up so basically
three totes of phone and
some other miscellaneous pictures and
some scrap metal
so anyways shows good three-day show
i made a total of uh
there it is
2033
three days
okay it's 3 17 it's shut for two but i
still made it
uh i don't know today i think i made um
425
almost just under 500 today which was
pretty good
propeller on the scrap
i'll probably just keep this so i don't
mind this thing here can't sell it but
i'll just keep it but i'll scrap
probably scrap that when the prices are
high not right now price is too low
when it's around closer to three dollars
okay i think that's it guys uh
fraser valley antiques collectibles club
show
this is the 27th year
okay guys thanks for watching have a
great day
