far from the hazards of a South American

jungle or the Wilderness of Alaska I met

up with Verna Herzog in the Suburban

Wilds of La which he currently calls

home we wanted to get a quick exterior

shot of Herzog in his native habitat

when things took an unexpected turn in

Germany I've somehow left a paved Road

nobody cares about my films for example

what's

we quickly realized that some wacko had

taken a pot shot at us with an air rifle

and Herzog had been hit we beat a hasty

retreat

doing an interview with Herzog wasn't

meant to come with a dangers associated

with making one of his films when we

reached the car Werner insisted that he

was not seriously hurt nor did he want

to try and track down the gunman of the

world actually it's not really very

friendly towards filmmaking no

so we headed for what would hopefully be

a safer spot to talk about the

challenges of making his most recent

documentary Grizzly Man

foreign

during the course for your career you've

been shot at a couple of times and in

fact when we started this interview

somebody took a shot at you and they

killed you right yes it hit me you I I

heard it and it it hurts a little bit

and I was just standing it's not a

significant bullet well have you got a

wound yeah somehow I think yeah what do

we see so this is literally just

happened outside the camera and there

was a noise and it was a whiz and you

just said I've been shot you had look

you're bleeding I think you're somewhere

well you I mean that's that's a

somebody's shot at you and created a

wound in your ass it's not not

significant

to you it's like this is like some kind

of everyday thing you know filmmaking

it's not an everyday thing but uh it

doesn't surprise me to be shot at

I shoulder to think what would have

surprised Werner Herzog

I think uh bottom line is the poet must

not avert his eyes

you have to take a bold look at what is

your environment what is around you even

the ugly things

even the decadent things even the um the

dangerous thing things you don't think

there's a chance of being defeated by it

of course it is out there but but so

what

um

if

done good battle

and um

I've been a good soldier

a good soldier of Cinema

and that's what I want to be

thank you
