In the early days of World War II, the German Luftwaffe (air force) was the dominant force in the skies. The Luftwaffe had developed a new weapon, the cruise missile, which was used to devastating effect against British cities. The British response was the development of the "Flying Bomb" - a pilotless aircraft carrying a large bomb, which was launched from sites in southern England towards targets in Germany.

The Flying Bomb was a very effective weapon, and caused considerable damage to German cities. However, the Luftwaffe developed a counter-measure, the "flak" (anti-aircraft) belt, which was a line of anti-aircraft guns and searchlights around the target area. This made it very difficult for the Flying bombs to get through to their targets.

In the later stages of the war, the Luftwaffe also developed the "V-1" Flying Bomb, which was an even more deadly weapon. The V-1 was a pilotless aircraft carrying a large bomb, which was launched from sites in France and Holland towards targets in England. The V-1 was much more difficult to intercept than the Flying Bomb, and caused considerable damage and loss of life in London and other British cities.

The British response to the V-1 was the development of the "V-2" rocket, which was an even more deadly weapon. The V-2 was a rocket carrying a large bomb, which was launched from sites in Holland and Belgium towards targets in England. The V-2 was much more difficult to intercept than the V-1, and caused even more damage and loss of life in London and other British cities.

The V-2 rocket was the last major weapon developed by the Luftwaffe during World War II.
